Oct 22 Expectations: T-Mobile G1 Google Android Phone

The official release date of the T-Mobile G1 will be Wednesday October 22nd, the first in a long line of Google Android handsets. When we first learned that Google were to supply software for an open source phone expectations were high, as Google is a big player in the free software market.

The king of Smartphone’s has to be the Apple iPhone, and it has left other handsets cowering in the corner as they know they have been beat. HTC in partnership with T-Mobile now hope that the G1 will be able to take the fight to the iPhone 3G. The battle is going to be a long one, and the G1 has a huge burden to carry, knowing that it is the first Google Android phone, and many eyes will be watching, including Google.

A number of analysts do not expect the T-Mobile G1 to be a huge success from the start, but they should still be able to sell in big numbers. This is where expectations will be high yet again for the G1, knowing that the iPhone 2G sold 270,000 handset in just 30 hours of its launch. The iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in just one week.

One thing is certain, come October 22, the world will be watching to see what kind of impression the G1 will have on the cell phone market.
