No strategic fit for Microsoft to buy BlackBerry maker RIM
By: Daniel Chubb | October 18, 2008 | 2 CommentsThis week has seen many analysts in the financial sector buzzing at the thought of a Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) takeover of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM).
While this is currently just a rumor, expects have been debating the idea of Microsoft buying RIM and if it would make sense. We have heard a rumor that Microsoft has said to its brokers to buy RIM shares when they drop to $40 or $50.
As we write this article the RIM share price is $59.01, this is not far from the rumored buy price of RIM’s stock. Investors must be thinking how much truth is behind these rumors.
The real problem comes when we think about how Microsoft will merge the development stream within their own business, at first this may mean that the BlackBerry operating system may have to be run separate. Then we have the problem with the way RIM and Microsoft employees work.
There does seem to be more problems than advantages, Microsoft pushes the .NET platform and Blackberry’s OS is built on Java. This and other problems make an acquisition of RIM seem impossible.
Do you see Microsoft buying RIM a good idea and can you see a strategic fit for Microsoft?
