Sony Blu-ray Sales: BVA show 396% increase

Sony Blu-ray Sales: BVA show 396% increase

By: Peter Chubb | October 17, 2008 | 5 Comments

Blu-ray was embroiled in a format war with HD DVD, and it was the former that was victories. The new enemy for Sony’s Blu-ray was the state of the economy, as this would deter consumers from digging deep to part with the case to purchase a Blu-ray movies, as they are more expensive than a standard DVD.

This; However does not seem to be the case, as the British Video Association (BVA) have realized new sales figures, and it shows that UK Blu-ray movie sales have increased by 396%. These figures show that Blu-ray movies sales are better than ever.

These year-to-date figures are just short of 1.5 million units. This is a vast improvement, but the only way that they can drive these Blu-ray movie sales up are by reducing the price. I love purchasing movies, but paying over £20 for one is just wrong.

If sales have increased it’s because films worthy of being on BD have been released – Iron Man, The Hulk and soon TDK. For all other films cheaper DVD and upscaling is more than fine. After all no one’s gonna buy Juno on BD.

This is great news, as I’m an advocate of Blu-ray and have been for well over a year. Movies have never looked (or even sounded) as good as they do in high definition.

I agree that UK Blu-ray prices are currently too high, but they are available at much more reasonable prices right now. I’m paying between £14 & £18 a movie from places like http://www.playusa.com and http://www.axelmusic.com. PlayUSA is a good option as delivery is free and fast. Some films are even less than a tenner!

If you’ve got a UK Blu-ray player (e.g. UK PlayStation3) then you will need to check compatibility as most films are from USA. However many of the films are not region coded and will work on a UK spec machine (a good region coding info website is http://bluray.liesinc.net/).

Must be all the money the Brits save by NOT having dental work done !
Fact: As the BD propaganda machine grinds on toward oblivion, the staggering 9% total optical disc market share they had “enjoyed” (pa-leezee) has indeed FALLEN to now only 8% total market share. Hardly rocking the market, eh Sony !
It’s good to know the Sony curse ( most prolific producers of failed formats ) is still in place.
Unlike the above propaganda BS, you can verify my info by Googling “Blu-Ray Sales Figures”.

Yeah right, so the sales figures are so good you have to quote the increase from last year instead of releasing the actual sales figures of the entire market. If you sold 1 blu ray last year, then a increase of 396% means that you ONLY sold 4 units this year. I believe that Blu-ray hasn`t even broken the 2% mark.

“Must be all the money the Brits save by NOT having dental work done !” Actually we’re all broke because we paid for a war our idiot and evil leader followed your idiot and evil leader into ;)

All that aside BD will never take off when the cost for so many of the films is so high. Plus many films don’t look any better than on DVD and sometimes look even worse. Why pay £25 when many can be purchased on DVD for £3?

BD is a film format for games machines. I don’t expect it to be around for long or to be using it in 5 years time – much like my old PS2 or Gamecube games, I see it for what it is and it’s disposable.
