BlackBerry Bold costs $170 to make: sells for $350
By: Peter Chubb | October 17, 2008 | Leave a CommentWhen it comes to the cost of handsets, we know just how much it costs us in the stores, but we never know how much the thing actually costs to make. The Blackberry Bold is one of the latest handsets from RIM, so we thought we would see how much the thing costs.
Thanks to a little digging by iSuppli, they have managed to come up with some figures. Parts and materials for the Bold comes to just $158.16, with assembly and testing costs coming to $11.25, that a total cost of $169.41.
IF RIM was to sell the BlackBerry for $350 that would mean a markup of $45, before R&D sosts and software. Carriers then have to pay for marketing and shipping costs, as well as freebies that they might give away. Either way, there is still a lot of profit for each handset.
