Washington chooses Google Apps: Microsoft Office too expensive
By: Peter Chubb | October 16, 2008 | Leave a CommentThings just keep getting worse for poor old Microsoft; it seems that the Government do not like their Office program as much as Google Apps. Washington D.C. has chosen to use Google Apps rather than the expensive Microsoft Office.
Washington D.C. will use Google Apps for city employees, and as in the past when Washington makes a choice, other enterprises usually follow. With Google Apps being used instead of Microsoft Office, Washington D.C, have cut their huge budget from $4 million to just $475,000 a year in licensing fees.
The Google Apps consists of a number of programs including word processing and spreadsheets. Gmail will also be use to collect emails. Washington did not only choose Google over Microsoft for just saving money, using Google Apps means that new applications and interfaces can be assembled quickly on the platform.
