Sony PS3 with new 80GB X25-M SSD

The small hard drive that comes with the Sony PS3 can easily be upgraded thanks to an easy slot loading solution; we recently upgraded our Playstation 3 with a much bigger 160GB hard drive.

Other than the problematic machine tightened screws, it’s easy to replace the internal PS3 drive. What’s better than a 160GB or 250GB hard drive is a Solid State Drive solution.

ExtremeTech have replaced their PS3 hard drive with a new 80GB X25-M SSD, the results showed that installs from disc are basically the same thanks to them being limited by the Blu-ray drive speed. Although they did get a 30 to 40 percent increase on installs from downloaded games and post-installation load times.

That’s a nice speed improvement but at a cost, the SSD costs around $600. Hit the read link below for full details.

I think they need a crash course on drive speeds. The PS3′s Blu-ray drive is faster than the 360′s DVD and Wii’s DVD drives….

    Mark,
Nowhere does that say the PS3 blu-ray drive is slower than other systems to install. What it does mean is that copying to the HDD will be limited by the read speed of the blu-ray drive instead of the HDD. In other words there is no benefit to upgrading the HDD for blu-ray game install speeds. That is not important anyway since it is only done once. What matters is the day to day loading of data from the HDD.
