Socom Confrontation Review: Why is the web lacking

Socom Confrontation Review: Why is the web lacking

By: Peter Chubb | October 14, 2008 | 62 Comments

SOCOM: Confrontation is out today, Tuesday 14, October, on the Sony PS3. A number of gamers have been looking all over the Internet to try and read a review about the game; they want to know if the game is actually worth buying.

Way before a game is released a number of game review sites get early copies, this is so gamers can get an idea about the good and bad points of a game. SOCOM Confrontation seems to have slipped under the radar, and gamers are not happy. The web is lacking reviews; I tried to finds some, but came up blank.

This is certainly going to have an effect on the sales figures for the game today; as gamers will be reluctant to purchase a game that they do not know much about. If you have purchased SOCOM: Confrontation, then please send us a review for our readers.

I’ve been playing and still am playing the Beta. When it’s working it’s the mutts nutts!

  • http://www.socom.no Hawk

Socom: Confrontation is online only. Early copies to game review sites would do no good, as they would have none to play against.

  • ivan

SOCOM: Confrontation Is great iv been playing the beta since day one and now im playing the actual game. The head set is admazing to it beats all thouse cheap 20 dollar blutooth head sets. The game it self is admazing iand is worth to buy. The graphics… and the game play are both admazing. This game is like warhawk onlione only, but i can image this game will be updated like crazy and new expansion packs will come out like warhawk for sure. SOCOM: Confrontation is admazing and is a must get for any ps3 owner. Id give this game a 8.8 why? Online only, the price of 59.99 is 2 high for a online game sure it comes with a headset but it should be 49.99 and three the game is hard to get good at because you have a lot of players who used to play socom a lot so if your new at it. it will take a while untill your good. so dont get pissed if you suck at it for the biggning :P

  • logan

Developers don’t release online exclusives early for review and the game doesn’t release till thursday. Get some facts.

  • Rob

I’ll think you’ll find it was released today so don’t be too harsh until you’ve checked your facts…

  • erocker

yeah i’m wating to see what’s up with it, from the video’s it looks like the graphics are really weak. and if thats that case i might skip. either way, just read the review for “Dead Space” got like 8.7, so i’ll get that tomorrow while i wait to hear about Socom. the $39 price has me worried that it might be a PS2 game with alot of clan stuff, but we alll know how well the PS3 handles online clan stuff, BF Bad Company 6 months later the freaking mic’s still dont work. i’d wait to hear something first one this one. i could be wrong, i hope i am!

  • Killa

Blu Ray disc dont come until tommorrow. ATM you can only buy it on via Playstation Store.

  • Irish

Anyone tell me why all the hype was a release on the 14th but it doesnt hit shelves until the 15th? If anyone knows who has it in stock please let me know I live in NH Thanks

  • Irish

Killa I cant find it on the PS store are you sure you can download it?

  • http://productreviews.net Austin

The graphics are sooo raw. The reason they didn’t give early copys for reviews is because people like me who are ranked top ten in kills already know that nio matter what we will still play it. The makers arent worried about the new socom gamers they just want their same ol; socomers to be happy. If you didnt like any of the other socoms i doubt you will like this one. It is a mix between socom combined assault/bf bad company/cod4/ if you want an updated version of those games mixed together go spend the measely 40 bucks and dont miss this awesome game.

  • erocker

I’m still going to wait a few days to see what’s up with it. i’ve just been burned to many times with the PS3 so far, Condemed 2, sound glitch every 30 sec, BF Bad Company (no mics) i really hope they get it right. might take a while because having clan matches and all that is not going to go as smooth as planned, me thinks, well experence with the PS3. but i hope it’s good cuz i’ll be first to go get it. just not geting burned on the hype also like….HAZE! weak!!!!

  • Killa

It should be under newest downloads on your Playstation Network. Yes… They wont hit shelves till tomorrow, which its sadly insane. Zipper never EVER had this problem, they announced the date and you can pick it up that same day.

  • Irish

says its not coming to ps store till the 16th?

  • Killa

Weird, I hear people saying its been out. Sorry for the Confusion. I guess we all got to wait till tomorrow. =(

  • Squeeze

Hmm I called up best buy today they have it but can’t put it out tomorrow. I played the beta not the same as s2 but seems like it will work.

  • a cat said

Game is on shelves the 15th idk how people got it earlier. The Beta was pretty sick i lot of bugs to work out but thats what Betas are for. cant wait to pick it up tomarrow

  • jazzbrownie

it’s kind of ridiculous that you can’t pick this up… everywhere I’ve looked says that the game should have released yesterday.

  • TG

It was out at Best Buy the 14th and Gamestop the 15th. Not sure about the online download.

  • Brett

It was out yesterday. I hadn’t heard anything about socom so i was surprised. I went there to try and score RB2 or littlebigplanet early but they didnt have either. As i was walking out i saw a display with 6-7 socoms on it and i walked up thinking they were just the boxes, but they were the whole game.

  • jose

THIS GAME IS GREAT HEADSETS R BADASS.DONT BUY IF YOU LIKE EASY SHOOTING GAMES LIKE COD4.

  • bryce

i got socom 2day. the headset is a pain in the a$$ to get working. the graphics are HORRIBLE. i cant tell u how bad they are. i dont want to say much more than that yet.

  • M

I played the beta, it was bad. But it gradually got better. Not as much fun as I remember Socom being and I’m not completely sold on buying it even though I pre-ordered. Based on the beta, I was really disappointed.

  • a cat said

are you kidding me bryce^^^ the graphics are amazing, especially on an HD TV. 10x better than cod4

  • flick

It came I today. I bought it.

  • pok3rf4ce

    SUCKS!!!
I barely been playing for about an hour until I got kicked by the server and I can’t get back on!
    WTF???!!!

How can any game company sell an online only game and have there fkn servers fkd UP!!!!

    this is straight BS!

  • pok3rf4ce

makes me want to buy a fkn xbox!

  • tman

i agree what the hell is going on….the server has been down for quite awhile now…this isnt like the old socoms at all

  • tman

does anyone have a clue whats going on with it right now?

  • bryce

r u kidding me a cat said? r u on dope? the graphics on the people are 2d. they suck. and btw i dont play cod4. its a good game tho

  • niklas

doesn’t release in canada until the 16th apparently out in the states.
buy this game if only just for the mic alone (49.99 retail value means u get the game for 20 bucks)

  • Irish

you cant review what you cant play b/c of SECA’s failure to have servers setup properly on release date. That coupled with the fact with the downloads and setup time it will be 3 hours from the time you insert the disk, till you actually get your error messages (aka play the game), and thats IF you can connect at all

  • jamaal

well damn…it hasnt even been out for 2 days yet, give them time to work out a few bugs before you all start bitchin…a game that goes from beta to live is bound to have a few problems, just gotta give them a few days to fix. although since they screwed up the release, most people shouldnt care cos they cant get/play it anyway…

  • RoloTomasi

Yeah, i picked the it up today and have had a pretty hard time getting into a game, I keep getting shut out of the server, or I’ll wait forever and then I’ll get into a game and all I can do is observe. But I have gotten to play a bit and there were definitely some really intense gunfights. I think this game is gonna be pretty sick once they stabilize the servers and send (another) patch. I hope.

  • TG

I played for about an hour lag free before I got the network error. They screwed up on the servers, but I can tell you that the game is awesome fun when it’s working and the graphics aren’t terrible and the customization is pretty cool. I wish you could select your custom loadouts in game if respawning though for practice.

  • eROCKER

yeah irsh got it right, first you have to download the the new ps3 2.5 patch, then install the game installer (shows on your ps3 as 2 discs) then once that’s done you have to install the game. and then when that’s done, you have to download the patch. then when that’s done, you have to install the patch to find that there’s a corrupt save data file that you have to delete, then log on to find unable to connect the servers, lol. i did finally connect and it was about 3 hrs later and it is going to be sick ass hell when they get the servers up. you think after so many times they would be prepared for this. but i cant wait to start digging into this game.

  • Defkon

I picked the game up tuesday so i’ll try to give an unbiased review. As a new PS3 owner I purchased the game based on previous experience with the franchise, and was surprised to learn that it is an online only game, only after getting it up and running. The box has a small description of this fact on the corner of the case, but as many retailers opt to keep titles behind glass cases that are behind counters, combined with the utter lack of any editorial reviews may lead to a large number of customers with the same experience.

The game does require a small installation, which of course seems to take forever, coupled with the fact that when you go to run the game, you’ll be told your install is out of date, and needs to be updated before you can play. Server problems and new release fever lead to a lengthy download and install time. I encountered some profile corruption and was instructed to delete my socom profile before I could play. As a new PS3 user I mistakenly deleted my install and had to go through the entire lengthy process again. 3 hours later I was able to see the menu screen. It’s worth noting that even after you install the game, and get it up and running, that every time you put the disc in, you have the option of reinstalling it. This was just the first indication to me that the game felt very rushed or unpolished.

Once into the game you’ll be given the ability to customize your avatar. It’s very similar to the load out process from Rainbow 6: Vegas although with fewer options. Heavy, medium or light armor. Pick your weapon, your optics , etc. It would’ve been nice if some kind of virtual shooting range similar to MGS:4′s or even the ability to explore the maps had been included as an offline component, but that’s not the case. My biggest gripe is that all the voices for the op-for are middle eastern. I know its a sign of the times, but in previous titles the bad guys always were diverse. Hearing the narrator constantly spout “rejoice this” or “Holy land that” gets tired quick and leans on almost racist overtones considering the op-for are described as “mercenaries” not religious zelots.. Anyhow…

Servers are broken down into categories based on region, and finding a random one nearby isn’t all that difficult. After joining a game there’s lobby screen where the players can change their gear, and chat via mic. There are a number of different game types available although i’ve only had a chance to play a few of them. The realism bar is set somewhere between counter strike and R6:Vegas, so those demanding a simulation style of gameplay like ARMA, or AA may be somewhat disappointed. Movement only effects shot placement marginally and side to side movement seems as fast as forward locomotion, so the old dance of “strafe and spray” tactics seems to be more effective most of the time at least in CQB. Another odd detail is that with the exception of actually shooting (or talking) characters don’t really make much sound while moving. Knife slashes are instant kills and have a good reach, so you can opt to play like a ninja too if you like.

The best part of the game though is the community surrounding it. Thus far most of the players i’ve met have been focused on playing the game, and not abusing the microphone. I stopped playing Gears of War (and many other titles) online because i wasn’t thrilled with 6 year olds screaming into my ears.

Overall i’d say the game is pretty fun as an online run and gun title, it’s got some flaws, and lacks polish, but the core gameplay is simple enough to be enjoyed, and the community is fairly mature and a good group of gamers… and this being an online only game, is quite possibly the most important aspect of having fun.

  • jamm

i bought it last nite. so far its alrite, i only played for a little bit. not wut i expected but my cousin is in love with socom so i decided to pick it up to play it with him. first off…getting to the actual game is so annoying…install, system update, patch..it literally took like 3 hours. i couldnt get the stupid headset to work so i said screw it and went to play. well it says the data is corrupt..(the save file). i went and accidentally deleted the game along with the patch. so i had to install the game and dload the patch it again! then it takes forever to actually get into the severs cuz the good ones r always full and failed to connect to this and that…its f’n stupid. i got home around 9 and didnt acutally get to shoot anyone in the game till like 2am. so far im kinda disappointed. i shoulda bought dead space instead. but i duno mayb itll get better.

  • eROCKER

yeah Dead Space is freaking awesome. i bought both. lol, did the same thing and deleted the game data for socom instead of the save data and had to do the whole dam thing again 3 hrs sucked. but it will be woth it once everyting gets going a bit. but yea, Dead Space is awesome Graphic’s are so sick, controls, framerate is top notch. highly recommend that game for some single player. the gore in it’s amazing like stomping a head at it will sit and spu blood out. blew my expectations out of the water. between that and Socom. going to be a great weekend!

  • eROCKER

anyone know if the SOCOM Servers are up and running yet? its 1:30 here, and i’m just wondering?

  • alex

    Pros
+ Great headset if you buy the bundle.
    + Character customization
    Cons
    - Controls sluggish
    - Muddy Graphics
    - Camera

Controls are arguably what makes or breaks a game.

After spending a couple hours with the latest socom and fiddling around with the various options for controls I still couldn’t find a ‘comfortable’ middle ground. When the game is first loaded and you jump into your first game aiming feels constricted and slow. The addition of motion sensing seemed like a very unique concept, finally us console gamers will be able to peek around corners without first having to attach ourselves to a wall. I found the motion controls to be a bit cumbersome and not intuitive.

I usually favor third person type gaming, because I get a better feel for my surroundings. Although the camera can be manipulated slightly the differences are quite minimal. You can either be directly behind your avatar at a bit of a distance, or on either side at a much closer perspective. During game play it felt as if my character was always in the way. This really took away from my situational awareness drastically. I would often miss someone walking up to me because my guy was blocking my view.

The graphics had to be the second biggest disappointment. Call of duty 4 had amazing graphics and still had solid frame rates. Everything in socom seemed to mush together and characters were difficult to make out. All the textures looked washed out.

One thing I did enjoy was the character customization. Changing your character to be more specialized for tanking or stealth is a really nice option, but alas this isn’t a dress-up simulation.

I really wanted to like this game. I have played past socoms and enjoyed them all very much. I don’t like run and gun games as much as tactical shooters, but the best shooter right now on the market is cod4 and I was hoping that this game would have replace it.

I would strongly recommend that you rent this title first before purchasing this title. For me I got a really nice 60 dollar headset and a title that I hope to hock off on craigs list very soon.

  • pok3rf4ce

I bought this game yesterday at 2 (10-15-08)
I have had for over 24 hours now…total playing time…just under 4 hours.

Hope that gives you an idea of how long I haven’t been able to play.

  • josh

dont waist your money on stupid socom. just wait for call of duty 5, this game is the shiz nit dat dosnt quiz nit. I played the beta for x box 360, so all of you who dont have an xbox sell or burn yor ps3 immediately, and either buy or steal a xbox. glad i could help.

  • Zed

Being a fan of SOCOM after picking up SOCOM 3 by accident, I was all-too-eager to buy the new SOCOM game. Well, I begged and begged and finally got a chance to go to the store and buy it. I was thrilled, so much that my knees where shaking. After four weeks of waiting I was overjoyed… but it didn’t last long.

I’m a patient guy, so the long loads were easy to handle. So was the patching, and deleting the game’s profile (Go to the SAVE GAME thing, above the Trophy icon, NOT the GAME DATA section). Well, I was pleased when I put SOCOM in for the first time and played Crossroads. It was awesome!!! I learned what weapons suited me (I prefer the HK36 with a low-power or medium-power scope and a laser sight), and I got my first kill. IT ROCKED!!!

Who cared if the graphics were a little muddy? It’s a fun game, with cool animations, and when I fired an M4, it sounded less like a wimpy 5.56 carbine and more like an in-your-face assault rifle!!! Compared to the older SOCOM 3, the graphics were awesome, as were the sounds!! And I loved the customization of weapons. Plus, the weapons and maps just looked great.

But, the fun was not going to last for long. As it turns out, SOCOM’s server staff are what I call “morons”. When Metal Gear Online got its first expansion pack, the whole system nearly crashed because everyone wanted it. It seems like all Playstation 3 gaming companies don’t really understand how popular their games are. They probably just thought that their servers could handle the problem, but that just isn’t possible.

Another thing that ticks me off: how it says you can be from a huge variety of Spec Ops teams (SAS, GSG9, SEALs, etc.) but they don’t tell you how to do that. They should fix that quickly. Also, there is another problem: the servers get so full, that you have to continually attempt to log in. It takes about three to five minutes for the log-in to fail, and then you have to do it about five more times, and keep trying until the servers let you in. And eventually the server will disconnect you and let someone else in. It’s frustrating, but it’s just going to be that way until they fix the severs.

Another gripe I have: when you join a game that is in progress, you are sent to the lobby. If you say that you are ready to play, while the others are playing, you are automatically disconnected. What a load of crap!!

But, don’t let this handful of annoying gripes fool you. SOCOM is a great game. It’s addictive, once you get the hang of it. While the customization options aren’t as good as RSV, there is a plus: better weapon customization and 32-player games. The graphics on the characters might make you turn your head at first, but the core gameplay and, like the guy said up there, the mature gaming community make this game a great buy. If you want to take online gaming to the next level, this is the game to get. Just remember that the gripes I made earlier are being fixed right now, as we speak, so be patient and you will soon have a great game on your hands. I know I can’t wait!!!

Good luck, though. Hopefully the reviews will pop up soon, and they’ll be good.

  • Big Bob

I picked it up at my local game store on release day got home sat through the installs and could never actually get onto a server to play a game. On day two I got in a game in the afternoon. Thought the game was ok but the server issues are complete BS. You put out an online only game and then you don’t even put the proper network infrustructure in place to handle the load. What a joke Sony. I went into this purchase not really caring too much for the game instead really wanting the headset as I have two headsets that really don’t work well with the PS3. That being said I still wanted to play the game. I am not a fanboy of any one system as I have a 360 also which broke on my three times since owning it. It’s just a shame that Sony has such a great piece of hardware why can’t they put a little more effort into making the online service work. I have made it a point to buy most cross platform titles for the PS3 because the system just works but for any game that I want to play online have to buy it for 360 because their online service just works. Bottome line I am more willing to give my money to Sony than MS but Sony just makes it too hard.

  • Biz

Hey, I bought the game yesterday (10/16/08). Even thought i was aware of all the problems with the servers, I decided to give it a try. Graphycally the game is not very as goos as it should be, so i give it a 7 out of 10. The servers are a bit of a problem, but i was able to play since the very first moment that i tried. I don’t like the fact that most of the games availables do not let you respawn, so you either have to wait as an expectator once you get killed or leave the lobby. The only good thing is that as an expectator you can see more of what’s going on throught your partners view and you can help them out.
Overall i think that if the servers were running decently this game would have received way better reviews. But this is not the case…The coop is very good. you do not find players betraying teammates or just messing around as you do in Halo.

I’ll give it a couple of days so they can fix the problem, they already assessed this on yesterday’s patch. If there’s no fix to this problem, i’ll get rid of the game.

ps: the headset works nicely. For the people who is having trouble for the ps3 to recognize it, maybe you haven’t plug it to the ps3 yet with the usb cable.

  • http://www.boycottslant6.com Very Angry

I have been trying to get into a game and I am either booted out or the network says I have corrupted data or profile….

How the F*&k do you make a console game and screw up so bad, especially with a preimer title like this?????

I am soooooo pissed off about this whole server issue… I payed $65 dollars and have been waiting for months to get my hands on this only to have a game that didnt even make the final stage and is still a beta release as far as I can see…
Now if you make an online only game how can you release it to the public when it cannot even connect to a server? This a problem with PC gaming but on a console you must be kidding…. Slant 6 should never even be allowed to make video games as they have proven to be ignorant as to what to do with a stable online gaming network… I hate Microsoft and 360 but they do have a stable service for online. So why can Sony’s holiday blockbuster stand on its own to legs???? This is total bullshit… If they dont patch this soon I am taking it and my PS3 back to the store and selling it. For now its a wait and see what happens and I am stuck with a $65 bluray disc that is collecting dust…

Fix you act up Sony dont be such a bunch of shitheads…AND HAVE SLANT 6 REMOVED FROM YOUR GAME DESIGN STAFF…..

  • EricCBRAHHHH

    dudeeeee….I am f**kin sad

I was pumped as hell to get this game…and am still waiting for the great american postal service to leave the doughnut shop and deliver it. But after reading this string I have mixed feelings.

Part of me thinks…damn these dudes are just hating for whatever reason and Im sure the game will be as badass as the previous series. And the other thoughts goin through my head are…maybe these bros know what their talkin about, maybe they played socom and socom 2/3 (2 rocked them all!!) and these fu*ks from slant six messed up the game that made me buy my ps3.

Muddy graphics? bad character mapping/clarity? I need more info dudes…this shit is killin me, why the f**k would zipper give their badass franchise to incompetent nerds from slant if they cant deliver!?! I am hoping my game comes tomorrow so I can logon and see what the buzz is about, but til then I just wanna hear some more about this.

If you respond to this please let me know what previous ps2 socom titles you played, how long, and your comparison (graphically, etc.) to them.

    Thanks

  • pok3rf4ce

The game play is slowly getting better in terms of connectivity. I will say the maps are AWESOME!
They are so in depth and detailed i want to say there the best maps I’ve played on any game.
I have now clocked just under 50 games and my rank is going up. I’m actually at 4 now.

There are issues where the game freezes now and even though it’s a bit annoying, but it’s nothing like the catastrophic launch day.

Overall this game is awesome when it’s working.

The pace of the game is not at all like COD4, it’s much more deliberate and slower paced. There are hardly any people who I saw die from random nade and 203 fests. The shooting is also much more precise, if you spray and pray you’ll most likely get taken out. that being said the movement and the shooting take some time to get use to.

If you haven’t bought this game yet I would wait just a couple more days till slant 6 gets some more of the bugs out. however if you can tolerate some freeze issues and sometimes long load times AND ranking up is an issue for you, you may want to get this puppy today.

Just so you know I was P I S S E D the first day it came out, my opinion of the game is now changing for the better.

  • pok3rf4ce

yes, I have played ALL the previous SOCOMS

  • http://www.houseofebooks.ca Andre Lavictoire

I’m really surprised that I don’t see 10 or 20 pages by now on reviews about this game. I myself enjoyed playing the Beta and now the retail game I met lots of friends playing Socom and joined a great Canadian Clan called JTF2.

bought the game and its amazing nuff said

  • Jed

I have to agree. Call me impatient but I expected the game to work when I bought it. After 3 hours of installs and updates, I then found out how unreliable the servers were.

That was four days ago. Since then, I’ve realized how good this game really is. The gunfights are intense, the objectives are more engaging and challenging than COD4, and as said in a previous post, the depth of the maps is astounding. This is the first Socom game I’ve played and I totally see what all the hype is about. And as for the servers, they’re getting better.

Somebody said the graphics are muddy, I think they are good. Not great, but the fact is that what really defines Socom is the tactical, intensity filled gunfights where teamwork can make or break the outcome. The new mic totally enhances what is possible though coordinated attacks (though to be honest I’m not there yet).

Long story short, I wasn’t sure about this game…but I am now.

  • christopher

Ive just downloaded it from the uk from us psn store. It took about 3 hours for the actual game + install. The update took about 30 minutes. But have to sleep now. So have not had a chance to play yet.

  • eROCKER

that’s why you guys need Dead Space, for when the servers are down, lol. but seriously, its over the shoulder view (alot like Socom) but you are stuck on a huge sapce ship like 200 years in the future. basicly, if you liked DOOM3, this leaves it in the dust with gore. but still a mystery type game. yeah SOCOM pis’n me off with the servers going down. i’ve had it since lauvh and only palyed about 3 good times. good game though.

  • Raymoney

This game is worth the money, if you like action shooting games. I personally give SOCOM a 8.8 and a perfect 10, because it is an online only game. If SOCOM had single player in it, it would most definately get a 10 from me. It defeinately takes a long time to install the game, but if u have patience you should be ok. By the way if you get the bundle

  • Defkon

Updated info: I made the decision to trade my copy in at my local gamestop, and was astounded to hear that not only will they take the game without the microphone, but that MANY people had done it. If for whatever reason you are still considering buying this game, be aware that the trade in value is 16 dollars, which means you could probably score this game for 20 bucks used if you hang out at your local gamestop and out bid the clerk when the guy trading it in hears the bad news.

  • wayne amison

I am a big socom fan and I must say I am MAD AS HELL adout the game Iike playing as a seal but they only have 2 siper rifles and were the hell is the 50.cal sniper rifle for the BAD buys . this has peeed me off!!!!!!!!!

  • Braveworld

I picked up the game on the 15th with high expectations. I have played socom for over 2 years and was very excited for the franchise to move onto the ps3, wether it be with the same develloper or not. Before popping the disc in, I deleted the beta data thinking that the game would make me do it anyways. After putting the disc in I got two options , the game itself, and a Game Data Installer. I figuere the title gave it away, I clicked on Game Data Installer. My download of the game data took about 20-30 minutes and the install took about 10-15 minutes. When I loaded up the game it said I needed to download patch 2.50 for the PSN. After spending 40 minutes downloading and installing this patch (which was mandatory for ALL ps3 online users), I started up the game and was told that my profile data was corrupt. I quit the game and went to my game save data and deleted my socom data. I started the game back up and finally got the the title screen. I went to my armory to customize my Commando. The detail of customization is similar to that of RBSV, except you can customize your Mecenary too. The game features in-dept clan support. There are rosters in-game and you can send clan invites to random players and friends. There is not just a clan tag in-front of your name….(*cough* COD4..*cough*) Many people are complaining about the graphics. I believe that these are people who have watched videos on youtube and have never actually played the game. I’m playing my copy of socom on a tube TV and the graphics by comparison are better than those of call of duty 4.
Being that Socom is an Online Only game, which any person following the game would know, you would expect the servers to be functioning properly. Slant 6 is pretty new to online gaming, their previous socom title for the PSP being single player only. The first few days were pretty rough for the games servers. Slant six did not imagine that so many people would buy the game and be online all at once. The servers did not stop working. They simply wouldn’t let anymore players online. Many players got the “Server Login Failed” message and thought the the servers had stopped working altogether. During the daytime when all the kids were at school it was simple to get online.
The reset their servers a few days after launch greatly improving the boot and lag issues. The gameplay and mature community of this game make the title a must buy.
    Some details:
    OTS or 3rd Person View
Six Axis to lean (sensitivity is tweakable)
    Fully customizable controls
Closed Mics( at first glance this may seem bad, but after having little children screaming in your ears on COD4 its actually thousands of times better, give it a shot, you’ll see that the lack of loud music, babies crying, annoying kids yelling, is actually a good thing.)
    Fully customizable characters( even voices)
    Fully customizable guns (suppressors,scopes,grips,lasers etc…)
This is not a game like COD were you simply hit find game and you get sent into a game with a map you do not like. In this game you enter a server and get to view a list of games. You can see number of rounds, round times, map, number of players, number of max players, before even entering the room. The customization of rooms is amazing aswell. You can set everything from amount of rounds, respawns, to round time, friendly fire and even which weapons you do not want to be aloud.
Overall, when the servers are ok (which they are now) this is a great game, and I recommend it to any person that likes shooters (even if you don’t, this game will make you like shooters).

This Game IS HORRIBLE. the load is unbelivably long despite the install. If your able to actually get into a Ranked game , it will freeze up on you. Ive never played a game that freezes up on you so much, all across the servers the same complaint. Should you do anything like checking your stats or a buddies you run the risk of freezing up. This game needs another serious patch. COD or Bad Company in my opinion are far superior. Sony Dropped the ball on this one.

Poeple complain about the server and i agree, however thats not even the whole thing thats wrong with this dumb game.

I love Socom 2-3 and conffrontations game play when you get to is the worst thing about the game.
You cant run and throw granades or shot while running. You have to push a button just to run. The agility is very slow about half the speed of Socom 3. While running your turn radius is like 15ft. You only get 2 units of extras(smoke, granades, …). Re-load time is twice as long as Socom 3 and throwing distance is about 70% of Socom 3.

Thier are even more but to many to list.

Slant Six turned a great game into garbage. Slant Six please stop making games let Zipper Interactive make Socom games.

Marc…. Have you ever thrown a real grenade….? It doesnt bounce like a ping pong ball or weigh the same as a tennis ball.. So they actually got it right in this game. Also have you ever tried to sprint in full kit… you cant go that fast bro..If you tried to run and prep a grenade to throw in real life you would probably drop it and blow yourself up. So try to think of it in terms of reality. Thats what they are going for.
