FCC approves free Wi-Fi: interference concerns overblown
By: Peter Chubb | October 14, 2008 | Leave a CommentWireless carriers in the U.S. have been concerned that having free national Wi-Fi will cause interference, the FCC conducted a report and said that those concerns were overblown. This means that free Wi-Fi has now gone one step closer, the FCC concluded that potential interference with wireless carriers’ networks is minimal.
The FCC has been considered auctioning off frequencies which are in the 2,155-2,175 MHz band. The winner will have to supply free Wi-Fi across the whole of the United States. News of this has concerned the likes of T-Mobile.
The carrier fears that the Wi-Fi would interfere with Advanced Wireless Services-1 spectrum, the company recently purchased this for more than $4 billion. The federal Communication Commission conducted tests into this in September near Seattle, a report released by their Office of Engineering and Technology stated that the concerns were overblown.
