Ford refuses GM merger: Chrysler was second choice
By: Peter Chubb | October 13, 2008 | Leave a CommentJust days after sources released a rumor that GM wish to merge with Chrysler, it seems that they are the automakers second choice. The same people who gave us this story now says that General Motors actually went for a merger with Ford first.
The news was leaked by The New York Times, but like the previous story, they did not give any details to the unnamed sources. The sources say that GM approached Ford with the merger proposal, but Ford Motor Co. executives refused the offer point blank.
In the talks were GM CEO Rick Wagoner and President Frederick Henderson, and Ford’s executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. and chief exec Alan Mulally. Ford and GM have been rivals for years now, so to think that Ford would agree to a merger with GM was madness.
