Open Source Helped by Recession
By: Daniel Chubb | October 11, 2008 | Leave a CommentWith the financial world witnessing what many stockbrokers have never seen in their lifetime, things are changing faster now than they normally do in finance. This change will also bring about big changes in the software industry.
We have known for some time that its popular opinion that operating systems like Linux are gaining more computer users thanks to cheaper devices running that OS, this may bring a free version of Windows one day (we hope). The same goes for Open Office compared to Microsoft Office.
With a worldwide recession on its way or already here, it looks like Open Source software will be helped massively by this turn of events. It’s common sense that money will get tighter for most people and this will mean more computer users looking for free “Open Source” versions of the software they use.
In a few years when we come out of this recession, will the software industry be changed forever?
Companies will seek to lower their IT costs so they can continue to service business needs, one way they can do this will be with Open Source. A recession will be very kind to open source, and will bring about change that may change the software industry forever.
How do you see a recession affecting software and Open Source?
