Microsoft could takeover RIM and own Blackberry

Although it has not happened yet, it could be possible in the future that Microsoft could enter a takeover bid for Research in Motion (RIM). In June the Blackberry maker was boasting about a market capitalization of $83 billion. How times have changed in just a few short months, as this figure has now dropped to $32.5 billion.

If someone like Microsoft was to takeover RIM, just think of what they are buying into and how they would be able to rival Apple finally. At the moment Apple have the iPhone and Microsoft have nothing.

With RIM launching three new Blackberry models, the Storm, Bold and the Pearl Flip, Microsoft could then take the fight to Apple. As yet this is all speculation, but Microsoft is the best company to takeover someone like RIM, and they certainly have the funds to do so.

  1. Interesting point of view. However Blackberry doesn’t currently run Windows Mobile so there would be a huge amount of development to do to get Windows Mobile on the Blackberry. I can’t see Microsoft wanting to own two mobile platforms.

Maybe a better fit would be HTC, they already produce phones which run Windows Mobile so there is an easy fit there.

Also they have just launched the G-Phone so Microsoft, as well as taking the fight to Apple could damage Google’s Android strategy at the same time.

I’m not sure what the value of HTC is but it’s got to be worth a look for Microsoft.

Again pure speculation but an interesting strategy!
