DRM removed from tracks on Play.com with Playdigital

Play.com have something to smile about, as EMI, Sony BMG, Warner Music and Universal Music have signed an agreement with the online retailer, allowing them to offer tracks without any DRM (Digital Rights Management “protection”).

Play.com is not the first online retailer to offer DRM free music, but they are one of the largest as well as winning the award for best e-tailer from Which? Magazine. Playdigital was launched back in February and can now offer over 3 million tracks with the new deal.

Play.com is one of the cheapest online retailers for music downloads, undercutting both Tesco and Asda. However; Playdigital still has a long way to go to worry the likes of Apple iTunes.

I think the biggest hinderance to paid for downloads is the price and until they’re cheaper than a physical CD they’re going to trail behind. Yes sales are picking up but only for those who value convenience over price.
