Mercedes Benz Bluetec: the future of clean diesel engines
By: Peter Chubb | September 30, 2008 | Leave a CommentThe Mercedes Benz Bluetec is a new super-clean diesel, and is hoped to become the future of diesel engine design. The engine is an E320 BLUETEC 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel engine, which has four valves per cylinder with each injector being located at the center top of the combustion chamber.
Older diesel engines had a mechanical pump to individually feed each cylinder; the BLUETEC’s injectors are fed by a central fuel rail. This is supplied at a very high pressure, approx. 23,000 psi.
The Mercedes Benz BLUETEC engine uses a number of systems to help scrub the exhaust before it is released into the atmosphere. Two such systems are the NAC+SCR system and the AdBlue system. NAC+SCR. One thing is certain, no longer can we say that diesel engines are dirty, well not the BLUETEC system.
