New Asus Eee PCs: 1000HD, 904HD, 901 and 900 XP

Just the other day I was looking online at my local computer store and I saw that they was advertising a laptop, I couldn’t believe how cheap they’re getting. Today we hear there are four new Acer Asus laptops being released.

Out of the new Asus laptops the 1000HD XP is the largest model with a 10-inch display. The 900 XP, 901 XP, and 904HD XP all have 8.9-inch screens with a 1024 x 600 resolution.

The Asus 901 XP is the only laptop fitted with the Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor. As far as we are aware the other three models have Intel Mobile CPU’s.

All of the new Asus’s have Ethernet jacks, 1GB of RAM and 802.11b/g WLAN apart from the Eee PC 901 XP that also features draft-N WLAN. Bluetooth connectivity is an extra on the 1000HD XP.

The 900 XP has a 16GB SSD, the 901 XP will come with a 12GB SSD, and the 904HD XP has a 80GB SATA HDD. All models will feature Microsoft Windows XP Home.

Prices will be $542 for the 1000HD XP and 901 XP, $479 for the 904HD XP, and the 900 XP will cost $447. Sadly all the models are only available in Taiwan at this time. View more Asus news or visit Pocket Lint.

    It’s Asus not Acer!

I just bought one and I’m quite impressed with it. The Celeron chip, although running at 900mhz runs xp applications faster and an Atom chip at 1.6ghz. I believe there are several benchmarks that proves this on the net. It is a power hog though. I’m able to get about 3 hours battery life at the most. If you want an ultra portable but need a PC that performs like a standard size one, you’ve found it. The back panel opens easily with only 2 screws giving you access to a standard size 120GB HD and a standard DDR2 memory chip. It only comes with 1GB but I recommend replacing it with a 2GB chip. This cheap upgrade is well worth the effort. Additionally, the alloy right/left click button is a clever touch. It won’t wear out like some painted plastic ones we’ve seen for the past few years.

Now for the downside–the keyboard is not full size so you will need some time adapting to it. If you have large digits, forget about buying one. You will be hitting 3 keys at the same time. Also the shift key on the right is under size and I haven’t been able to find it yet without looking. The little rubber feet on the under side has a tendency to dig into your lap. Thank goodness the machine only weights just over 3 pounds or you will have a few red holes in your legs. Plus, if you’re thinking of watching a DVD movie on this device, don’t bother because there isn’t one. Although a few DVDs do come with digital copies which you can load into your computer now so it’s not much of an issue.
But if you need to reinstall windows you will need to have an external drive.

In conclusion, the ASUS 1000HD is a fine machine capable of doing more than you would expect, If you’re able to overlook some of its quirks. You can find it in many retail stores for less than $400. It’s very portable and has a decent battery life with a decent performance to boot. It won’t play Doom or any heavy duty games but why would you on a 10″ screen!
