Toshiba’s HD-DVD Revenge: XDE DVD player, XD-E500 1080p

It was both painful and expensive for Toshiba when their HD-DVD format lost to Sony’s Blu-ray, but it looks like there is some HD-DVD revenge on the way.

Toshiba is launching its new upscaling technology called XDE; this stands for eXtended Detail Enhancement. Toshiba’s first product using this technology is a DVD player named “XD-E500 1080p/24fps”.

XDE promises to make your ordinary DVD’s look similar to Blu-rays thanks to some new upscaling technology. While Blu-ray has not made the public dump their DVDs yet, Toshiba wants you to keep your current DVD collection.

The XD-E500 DVD player will upscale your DVD video to 1080p, and it will also play many file formats including: JPEG, MP3 and DivX.

If Toshiba’s new XDE technology takes off then it cause a major blow to Sony’s Blu-ray, why would you want to buy more expensive Blu-rays when you can watch your large collection of DVDs in high definition?

The XD-E500 will be available this month for $149.99, we do not have a UK release date yet or price but will update you when its released. We are also hearing that televisions with “eXtended Detail Enhancement” may be on the way as well.

    Question;
    Will Tv’s without HDMI hookups be able to upscale to 1080i thru component cables?

    I live in africa and we are far off from these technologies, well by far. Here the main driving force is price and i really don’t see BluRays making such an impact apart from the PS3 consoles. So from here in Africe we cheer for any manufacturer and developer who finds a way to deliver to us entertainment the cheapest.

    Well it won’t take away Blu-ray for those who wish to have the highest definition available, but I’m all in favor of anything that breaths a bit more life into my enormous (well into the 500 disk arena) DVD collection. Blu-ray will continue to drop in price, and unless you have a 1080 HD capable TV (my is the older 780 or whichever) high-def) you aren’t really gaining anything with the Blu-ray anyway (since ‘regular’ dvds can achieve THAT level of performance). I don’t know if XDE will be in my future -I’ll certainly give it a look. I DO know that Blu-ray will be, eventually (likely when I get my 1080P projector in a year or two, and toss up a two-or three hundred inch screen).

    This sounds like a stupid gimmick to me. There is no way to add detail that’s not there to begin with. Maybe they’re doing edge enhancement or noise reduction, which results is LOSS of detail, but the end result may look a little better at the higher resolution.
