Gaming Sales Keep Falling: Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii & Sony PS3

The latest NPD Group sales figures have been released this week and they show that all positions of the major consoles remain the same in July as they were in June.

While we will touch on the exact results in a moment, first let’s focus on an interesting trend that seems to be forming. There seems to be a downward trend in sales figures for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Sony PS3.

Looking at the past results, this trend stands out a mile but what does it mean to the gaming industry? Feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The top three places in total software sold are as follows: Third place went to Guitar Hero On Tour (309,700) on the Nintendo DS, second place goes to Wii Fit (369,600), and first place was held by NCAA Football 09 for the 360 at 397,600 units sold.

In hardware sales third place went to the PS3 with 225,000 units sold, then in second we have the Nintendo Wii with 555,000 units, and pole position goes to the Nintendo DS with 608,400.

The gaming industry as a hole saw sales of $1.19 billion which is made up from Accessory sales at $152 million and Software sales of $591.1 million and Hardware sales $446.9 million, if you want to know more about these NPD Group sales figures then go to Efluxmedia.

Maybe they should stop charging an arm and a leg.

Do some research. NPD figures for last month were based on a 4 week period, the month before was based on a 5 week period.

Wii and 360 sales actually went up week by week if you take that into account.

It’s the summer!!!! Every year sales decrease, going frrom May/July August usually being the quietest time. Seasonal sales variations. Things will pick up from Octobe.r

I think the sales of games and consoles in general have dropped because the games simply stink. Even though the Wii is less of a graphics powerhouse I still had better games on the Cube… I think by 09 we will see some nice games with a bit more than just cartoony graphics and a control scheme that involves just shaking the wii-mote like in a seizure like fashion to win. As for the Xbox and PS3 do I really have to mention the poor lineup of games coming from the developers today. These games have no substance at all. I personally have resorted to buying a lot of my games from the Virtual Console.

I am guessing maybe the reason behind these figures is how expensive games (DVDs) are I mean Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 are great consoles and they have what it takes to great graphic & dislay..so it should be the expensive games DVDs behind that drawback to sales

you maybe right… but I think the developers have slacked a big. These games either make you bored in about an hour or just don’t have any creativity. Take Madden for example how many ways are there to play Football really? That games can sleep for about a 2 year in between new versions. Alll they have to do is update the rosters via the web. I mean isn’t that what happens when you log onto the net to play anyway? And that pretty much goes for any other sports game out there really… There needs to be more games with some creativity for example No More Hero seemed like it was on to something for the Wii. I never saw a game that played like that before and it had for the most part originality. Soon to be released is another game I’m anticipating to be a great one is Deadly Creatures, and Sadness if the developers will ever release it. Greatness takes time I know but man how long will it be before these games stop feeling like bad summer movies!!!!!

this reporter really hasn’t done his homework…

it’s summer! sales are always down in this period! and i believe your info is skewed as you have neglected the difference in NPD week periods month per month.

i mean, were you just TRYING to get soem attention with that false headline?

    meh.

Big releases are not realeased in the Summer, because

They don’t sell well. August is the dead zone for the gaming industry.

over it would better if this article was about how bad the titles for Wii are. I’d like to hear someone focus on the idea that is not ok to rehatch old games for the wii anymore as well that there are too many titles geared towards children. This I think will be the downfall of Wii someday. r

you may have a point, KH.
however, there are just too many games that look, feel, and play the same in other consules (i.e. every other 1st person shooter, post-apocalyptic plots, etc.). besides, those ‘rehatched old games’ are not necessarily geared towards kids. many of the old-schooled gamers enjoy the fact that they can play their favorite retro games on a new, reliable consule instead of the antique, fragile relics they have that they have no way of fixing.
