Defcon Update: Gag order slapped on MIT students
By: Daniel Chubb | August 15, 2008 | Leave a CommentA gagging order that has been slapped on MIT students has caused debates on what ‘responsible disclosure’ means, the court order was issued to stop a planned presentation at the Defcon hackers convention.
The three MIT students found security flaws in the electronic ticketing system that is being used by the mass transit authority in Boston, the ruling reopened in the IT security community because of the major issue of the so called vulnerabilities should be disclosed publicly.
The temporary restraining order was issued last Saturday by a federal judge; it has been labeled an infringement of the students’ First Amendment rights and an example of prior restraint on free speech.
Now to me this is all baffling, but for those in the know would understand why the court order was issued or indeed why it should not have been issued.
