Third-Party Game Confusion: Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360

You got to love results of game sales, it seems that market companies and the brands themselves always get confused and can never agree who is right.

Today we see some confusion over third-party games sales and who sells the most. Is it the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360?

Nintendo made a claim that the Wii sells more third-party games than the Xbox 360, but now we hear that Microsoft claim the Xbox 360 is the real winner.

NPD sales figures have this to show: The Nintendo Wii has sold 33,394,311 third party games compared to the Xbox 360’s 67,929,999 third party game sales. If those results are right, it puts the 360 well ahead of the Wii.

So whom do we believe if we wanted to know who has sold the most third party games? It looks like things are never that clear with conflicting numbers like this. Read more Nintendo news here and Microsoft news here.

    Both are correct.

Nintendo compared like for like (their first 19 months on the market vs Microsoft’s first 19 months on the market.)..and Nintendo’s 3rd party sales were higher for the same period in the consoles life cycles.

Microsoft used their life to date figures..which would obviously be higher..as they were released 12 months earlier.

Poor reporting from Gamesindustry.biz and Eurogamer.

I totaly agree with Rob, these facts are presented to give the results required. What I mean is- both are correct in the info they are giving but only in terms of relevence to themselves, ie Microsoft are using stats from day one of the 360 but Nintendo chose to use their first 19 months on the market- as Rob pointed out- the 360 had a good 12 months ahead of Nintendo.

It is bad reporting, made worse by those who are using such marketing ploys to blind people with figures for sales purposes. Unfortunatly, its an old tried and tested metod that will be with us for many more years im sure.

Remeber folks, when statistics are presented- always check how the info was gathered before making any judgements.

Nintendo Lied and said that there is a assumption that 3rd party titles don’t sell on the Wii (which is not true when the figures are examined) but when they went even further to say they sell more then the compitition, that is a Lie and that is what got them in Hot water. They used a Chart from NDP that detailed the first 19 months of each console from release date to come up with this figure. After Microsoft cleared that up it was shown that even the PS3 sells more 3rd party titles then the Wii.

i don’t even see how wii could sell that many. aren’t like all of their (good) games first party?

  5. Matt says:

Seriously…this isn’t a tough thing to grasp. The Wii, after 20 months on the market, has sold more 3rd party games than the 360 did after 20 months on the market.

Obviously its ridiculous to compare total 3rd party sales for the 360 for its entire lifespan (32 months) to the lifespan of the Wii (20 months).

MS is, as usual, manipulating the facts to try to explain why Nintendo is beating the living crap out of them.

    @ Matt
Totaly agree. At least others see through it- must be to do with the name lol
