No Extra Cost: 60GB for Xbox 360 and 80GB Sony PS3

The consumer has to smile when we see prices dropping on next-generation games consoles and also some features increasing.

We are now looking at 60GB hard drives for the Xbox 360 at no extra cost and also 80GB drives for the Sony PS3 at no extra cost.

You can pre-order the Sony Playstation 3 80GB for £299 and that’s the same price as the 40GB. At first this does look like a great deal, but we have to also remember you are not getting 4 USB ports, SACD playback, an Ethernet cable and even more annoyingly there is no compatibility with PS2 games.

The Xbox 360 also gets more hard drive space for no extra cost. The new Xbox 360 Arcade model will cost £160 and comes with five Xbox LIVE Arcade games and 256MB of memory. If you pay £260 then you can get the Xbox 360 Elite that featuring a 120GB hard drive among other things.

Our view is that the price of £299 on the PS3 is welcomed but the extra hard drive space is not, we can easily use an external hard drive or pop in another drive. It would have been better to keep at 40Gb and add extra USB ports and PS2 compatibility.

I’ve been after a PS3 for a while now, mainly as a media player but have ended up going for a 2nd hand 60gb model. I’d much rather have got a new machine but I wanted PS2 compatibility, as well as the USB ports and memory card readers. It’s a shame consumers are having to pay some really high prices for 2nd hand or supposedly ‘new’ 60gb machines in order to get these features. I got a good deal and a 12 month warranty so no real risk but it’s a bit scratched and came without the original box and manuals. I’d have happily paid extra for an 80gb that was more fully featured. HDD space is cheap and they’re just playing a numbers game without really giving anything to the consumer.

@ kevin, no, the xbox is just different, it’s like comparing a cheap hatchback to a bmw, both are cars yet one has better styling and more features built in. when it comes to games they look the same! each has it’s own exclusives. you pay your money and take your pick.

personally i think if people are going for an xbox they should pay the extra £50 and buy an Elite model. a 60Gb 360 is £199 (17th August UK), why they quote the price of the arcade i don’t know, nobody in their right mind would buy that bundle.

this is a biased review, once again! towards the xbox.
