The Sony PS3 no disc read issue is the real deal and lets quieten the gamers that claim its just coincidence that people are getting this problem after firmware 2.42 update.
We have had over 40 reports of the Blu-ray / Disc read issues and this is not just a few Playstation 3 owners getting this problem. 40 people are not many, but that’s just reports to us and we see many more on other sites and forums.
Have you had disc read issues with your PS3?
The comment below was one we heard from one of our readers and they raise some very good questions:
I’m 39 years old. I take very good care of my electronics. I don’t have kids (yet). Bought a pre-owned 20GB PS3 off someone back in Feb 08. It was in immaculate condition. Never had a single problem or issue with it at all. Until this weekend. I can’t recall if it was specifically after 2.42 that I got the “no disc read” issue, but it was definitely after 2.41 for sure. As of this weekend (updated to 2.42 a few days back with no problems in gameplay/Blu-ray playback etc) my PS3 no longer reads/recognizes any kind of disc whatsoever. I get the “working bubble” in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but the disc doesn’t appear in the XMB. This is NOT a phantom issue, and if it’s a “coincidence” that so many of us are experiencing this (and at an increasing rate) then maybe OJ really WAS 100% innocent after all and Dubya is truly the greatest president this country has ever seen.
I don’t have the warranty option, so it’s either send the unit in and shell out the money to get it fixed, or wait for a possible firmware update to correct the problem.
My question is this: what do they do at the Sony repair center to correct this problem? Is it firmware related, or is it simple mechanical failure? Can anyone with tech experience sound off on this? Why are so many of us all of a sudden having variations on the same problem in the span of a few months?
Yes, this is a real problem. As I stated before, I’m super careful with my stuff and know better than to shut the console off during an update, etc. I’m happy for those of you who aren’t suffering this frustration, and hope that you won’t have to. Or in the least, that if it happens to you Sony will already be on top of the issue instead of shrugging it off and happily collecting 150.00 a pop for the trouble.
C’mon Sony. We deserve better than this.
So why are so many people getting this disc read issue after firmware 2.42, is it software or a hardware at fault?

Hey there, last year around november my ps3 60gb got problems reading any bluray disk, after some digging in the web i knew ps3 had some bluray problemas and sony wasnt and it’s not doing that’s much to solve it (i hoope they realize what they did wrong and fix it like microsoft did with the xbox360). I decided to buy the ps3 laser lens for 76$ and it worked and i have my ps3 again but… and i had a friend who helped me change the mechanism…
i tell you it’s has nothing to do with the firmware cuz when mine went blind i was playing soul calibur and it just stopped!!!… i beleive it has something to do with the overheating near the lens
http://www.GameRepairWorld.com i bought my lens throu this page
i had 60gb ps3 loved it after downloading firmware played fine few days after turned on ps3 would not play any disc would play games downloaded from psn, contacted sony they was fine but could only offer me a refurbished 60gb ps3 as they did not make the 60gb version anymore but when it came it was in better condition then my original was just a bummer that i could not go on cod4
i have had my 60gb ps3 since launch and it shut down on me too i take very good care of my electronics my mac laptop iphone ipod touch psp and my ps2 witch has never given me any problems for 4 years this is not a matter of well kept electronics open your eyes its all over the net ps3 blu-ray drives are shutting down and sony wants $150 to fix them and FYI my ps3 sits on a round glass table that i got just for it and the table is cleaned daily and ps3 is cleaned twice a month or as needed dum azzes
ya just had the problem start today for some reason…. my 60gig ps3 will read everything and play my downloaded ps3 games but wont read the ps3 disk games. and if its really 150 bucks sony wants to fix it there crazy. but ill probley still do it cuz i love my backwards capatability and my memory stick ports and 4 usb ports.
This just happened to the 40GB unit we bought for work around 16 months ago. Very disappointed, it gets used regularly but not heavy use. We certainly won’t be paying £150 to get it fixed, I’d rather buy an alternative console at this point even though I’ve got one for home and so have a couple of others in the office. In my opinion if Sony don’t address this issue by replacing for free I would imagine it will be the final nail in what has been a very shiney black Sony coffin.
It has just happened to me as well. It happened while I was playing the COD4…. The screen went black and then….. chaos… nothing…. why…..:(
I have bought PS3 almost a year ago. First it was working all right but after FW 2.4 update I tried to run the MGS4 it showed a bubble at right top, after waiting a long time i realize that there is some thing wrong. first I thought that it was blu-ray problem but when I look at the CD, it was as clean as when it came.
I don’t know that it is hardware problem or a FW 2.4 problem but it is certain that there is some problem.
People who are saying that we shutdown our PS3 while it was updating should consider that, even a duffer would not shut it down, because, before updating there is a warning to not shut it down while the software is been update or something can happen.
It should also be considered that PS3 is an expensive machine, and, no one would like to take risk of shutting the system during system update down while he or she had been informed about the risks and consequences for turning off the system.
The PS3 owners whose system hat a problem of CD reading have right to complain or raise their voice against SONY and we have no right to curse them.
In the end I would like to say that I was lucky that there were only few days left for the warranty to finish and I manage to claim it in time.
Have the same problem, out of warranty, fought with multiple representatives to have the $150 repair price waived, no luck at all! Sony is doing itself a major disservice! This is ridiculous, I had used my PS3 maybe 25 times since purchasing and the stupid thing doesn’t recognize any discs. Sony is selling a very expensive paperweight, this deserves major protest! Do not buy a PS3!
i recently installed v2.80 and it now doesnt read the disc. it also has the working bubble but the disc isnt read HELP! i think sony is a technology GOD but its letting me down. P.S XBOX is a load of S***
Have the same problem with my 60 gb ps3, had it under warranty and the was replaced. Sadly it happened again an it cost around $150 to repair it since the warranty expired. The repair guy told me that the blu-ray lens was the problem
