Sony PS3 no disc read issue is the real deal

The Sony PS3 no disc read issue is the real deal and lets quieten the gamers that claim its just coincidence that people are getting this problem after firmware 2.42 update.

We have had over 40 reports of the Blu-ray / Disc read issues and this is not just a few Playstation 3 owners getting this problem. 40 people are not many, but that’s just reports to us and we see many more on other sites and forums.

Have you had disc read issues with your PS3?

The comment below was one we heard from one of our readers and they raise some very good questions:

I’m 39 years old. I take very good care of my electronics. I don’t have kids (yet). Bought a pre-owned 20GB PS3 off someone back in Feb 08. It was in immaculate condition. Never had a single problem or issue with it at all. Until this weekend. I can’t recall if it was specifically after 2.42 that I got the “no disc read” issue, but it was definitely after 2.41 for sure. As of this weekend (updated to 2.42 a few days back with no problems in gameplay/Blu-ray playback etc) my PS3 no longer reads/recognizes any kind of disc whatsoever. I get the “working bubble” in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but the disc doesn’t appear in the XMB. This is NOT a phantom issue, and if it’s a “coincidence” that so many of us are experiencing this (and at an increasing rate) then maybe OJ really WAS 100% innocent after all and Dubya is truly the greatest president this country has ever seen.

I don’t have the warranty option, so it’s either send the unit in and shell out the money to get it fixed, or wait for a possible firmware update to correct the problem.

My question is this: what do they do at the Sony repair center to correct this problem? Is it firmware related, or is it simple mechanical failure? Can anyone with tech experience sound off on this? Why are so many of us all of a sudden having variations on the same problem in the span of a few months?

Yes, this is a real problem. As I stated before, I’m super careful with my stuff and know better than to shut the console off during an update, etc. I’m happy for those of you who aren’t suffering this frustration, and hope that you won’t have to. Or in the least, that if it happens to you Sony will already be on top of the issue instead of shrugging it off and happily collecting 150.00 a pop for the trouble.

C’mon Sony. We deserve better than this.

So why are so many people getting this disc read issue after firmware 2.42, is it software or a hardware at fault?

    One might surmise. . . . You’re right–I am being overly technical. It’s what I do. :P

  2. Zoidbort says:

Do you do liguistics for a living or a prof of some sorts, if you do not mind me asking? ;)

  3. Zoidbort says:

    DOH! Correction:

Do you do “linguistics” for a living or a prof of some sorts, if you do not mind me asking? ;)

“you do nothing but resort to childish retorts about my personal life, my spouse, and how miserable it is.”

–Sounds like couch talk at your therapist.

“Use the education and facts you bring up to prove your accusations of me”

I have. The language in your previous post, which I’ve then used to come to my conclusions of you, were all the proof I needed. You said things like “lady friend”, “End Transmission” and others which help indicate who you are, including your age. Is it an exact science? No. You did take offense to my judgement of you, which then was sufficient for me to draw a logical conclusion of you.

“If you reply with more personal jabs, it just proves my point.”

–You’re old, you’re single, you’re most like ugly (which is probably one reason you’re still single), and you didn’t say what it is that you do for a living which leaves me to believe that you work at McDonalds. Ooops, guess I some how proved a point that was completely irrelevant, much the same could probably be said of you life.

“I have proven [my point] with direct quotes of you”

I’m assuming that the point you think you proved was that I “resort to childish retorts”, which is really debatable considering that you must first prove that what I’ve said is childish. Riddle me this, old man…What have I said that is childish?

“By the way man, I didn’t ask for your life story”

The reason I told you that is because I know that your life, despite what you say, is something that closely resembles that of those who live in third world countries.

“I do have my Masters actually (totaling 8 years of Uni)”

What did you get your masters for? Spellchecking? Seriously, 8 years is a long time to get a masters, even for people that are schizo and have OCD.

“I just bought a cozy home with my lovely fiancée & dog”

My friend is a realitor, and I know cozy means little $hit hole that’s the smallest house on the block. Plus, I think you’re confusing either your dog as your fiancee. We both know that statement isn’t completely true, don’t we?! What you meant to say was that you rent a condo in the slums of whatever city you live in, and you share that that little cramped condo with your dog who you call your fiancee.

“I make a liberal dollar per year”

Wow, you don’t collect welfare on that salary? I know that with your staff discount at McDonalds a dollar might buy a meal, but to get paid a single dollar per year…lol

“life is good on my end minus issues that life deals every one of us at times”

Paying trannies to have sex with you, then recieving a savage beat down from his pimp because you only had a dollar to pay him is not an issue life deals every one of us, that’s just you.

So, you still didn’t say what it is that you do for a living, plus, your last post seemed oddly vague…almost as if what you said was a complete lie.

Wow…that whole time you spent composing this!?

OK if you must know (but it will not change anything as you will just jump back to fragmenting my career/schooling/life but that is your own nature and I have no idea why I am going to give in to your trap). After high school, I traveled a lot at a young age and that I will never regret. Best way to spend one’s money and truly learn vs. books and opinionated profs at an institution. Later I went to technical school in the US for 2 years and got my certifaction in commercial diving & Non-Destructive Testing (underwater construction, welding, demolitions, etc) on power plants, nuclear plants, dams, etc. I did that for 7 years.

If you know anything about that commercial diving, you would know the ample pay they make since it is classified as one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs. Once that field of work died down and took its toll, I used my savings & traveled again. Eventually bringing myself back to school to learn something new. I first started off in Japanese history and linguistics. After 3 years of that I changed direction and did another 3 years of Southeast Asian studies and getting my degree in Humanities (SEA) and Religious studies centering around the Pacific Rim/Asia.

I have since then decided to complete my masters in Buddhism. Specializing in Mahayanist Buddhism over the Theravadin sect/ideal. So when I am not traveling/teaching, I assist locally with one of Canada’s largest telecommunications company dealing with CMS FQDN’s etc since I have a knack for technological things and networks etc & enjoy it.

Does that quench your thirst? I won’t stoop to your level of consistently resorting to poor quotes and attacks of persona and personal life. The Buddhist ideal in me keeps my possessions at am minimalist amount but my home is 3100 sqft. Not sure if that is considered small or big where you are but for 2 people and a dog, it is ample.

    @ VoidBolt

Void, I get the feelign that you’re so insecure about what do for a living that you felt the need to give me your actual life story, but feel free to elaborate.

Lol Weren’t you the one I made fun of for being a Canadian? Anyways, the reason I ask is because, as hypocritical as this is, I’m from Canada too. What Telecom do you do work for? MTS, Bell, SaskTel, Telus, Rogers? And by FQDN, I’m going to assume you mean Fully Qualified Domain Names…there’s nothing special about what you do currently, regardless of what you claim to have done previously. Plus, I checked out what people in your field make, and it’s chump change. I make 5k less annually than you would; so assuming what you’ve said is fact, I can only assume you live in a major centre (city). I highly doubt you could afford the property taxes of 3100sqf home (house, condo, or otherwise) in any city where any telecom has their headoffice or IT buildings. I know Canadian housing prices and property taxes, and even if you work in Ontario, where our economy was hurt must, you couldn’t afford property taxes of anything that size in the GTA.

If you live out west, you still couln’t afford your taxes with your wage, even if your home was in the lower east side. Shit, if you lived in Saskatoon, you still couldn’t afford your property taxes on a 3100 sqf home. There is not one city where you could afford your taxes, unless you live so far up north, where IT staff is never located, you are lying. Feel free to tell me more about your live so I can figure out what city your live in, or you could just tell me.

  7. Zoidbort says:

Why would you make fun of me for being Canadian if you yourself are a Canuck as well? I live on Vancouver island and afford my house just fine with plenty of funds to spare which are used to travel. I made loads of great investment decisions early on working in the diving industry and my current work pays incredibly well, the FQDN was just disinformation really. Reveal without revealing too much. I do not need to elaborate on who I work for or where for that matter honestly. You can walk away with your ego swelled, feeling you won and are right via a forum regarding PS3 issues. It really does not effect me either way. I do not know you nor would I feel the need to brag about who I am to you, there is nothing to gain from it. Your own desire to be correct only perpetuates your own daily suffering, really. Peace comes from within, do not seek it without my friend. Good luck on your graduation and perhaps you should travel instead of planted in the same place all your life? It might just surprise you.

  8. Zoidbort says:

Oh I forgot something man. Property taxes must be insane in TO! I pay around $1750/year (after a $550 home owner grant if you live on the property and are not using it for rental purposes) here for a 9400 sqft lot. You should move, another reason to un-plant yourself perhaps? Good luck to you

  9. IHateYouAll says:

    @ VoidBolt

“Why would you make fun of me for being Canadian if you yourself are a Canuck as well?”

Because I don’t care about that type of $hit, whereas people like you do. Need a tissue?

“live on Vancouver island and afford my house just fine”

Ya, it you live on a reserve where you don’t pay money for the $hit hole you live in. Other than that, I highly doubt you could afford your alleged property taxes on your salary from McDonalds.

“I made loads of great investment decisions early on working in the diving industry and my current work pays incredibly well”

I bet you did. With all the capital gains you must be receiving, considering our TSX has been posting daily losses, you must be living a stress free life. Obviously you should have come up with a better lie.

    “Reveal without revealing too much”

So now that you’ve admitted to lying on an online forum, you can no longer ask the question ‘why would people lie on an online forum’.

“I do not need to elaborate on who I work for or where for that matter honestly. ”

But if you’re willing to lie about working with a telecom, you’d image that you’d lie about have an equal or better job than your real one. With that being said, if working for a Telecom, making 50K annually, is equal or better work than what you have, your life really must suck a$s.

“You can walk away with your ego swelled, feeling you won and are right via a forum regarding PS3 issues”

This is where you prove you have no short term memory: That B.C. herb must have shortened that for you.

“I do not know you nor would I feel the need to brag about who I am to you, there is nothing to gain from it”

Because you have nothing really worth bragging about, so you make up lies and then make the lamest excuse for why you lied. There is where you say that you really do consider your dog your fiancee.

“Your own desire to be correct only perpetuates your own daily suffering”

You don’t even know what I’ve been defending, which is this article and people who take this article as if it were a fact (it’s just an article that is based on another comment, which you’ve proven by your lies that people shouldn’t regard as the truth).

    “Peace comes from within”

Which is why you feel the need to make up pointless lies that you have “nothing to gain from”. Sounds like your insecurities are impeding on your abilities to find peace.

“Good luck on your graduation and perhaps you should travel instead of planted in the same place all your life?”

No everybody wants to end up a failure like you. I’ll choose my own life, while you can continue to lie to yourself in hopes that those lies will one day lead you to find inner peace.

    “Oh I forgot something man”

Let me guess. You forgot to apologize to your parents for letting them down so terribly?

“Property taxes must be insane in TO”

There are 4 universities in Canada that have good ActSci programs, not just Toronto. But then again, what would you know about any Canadian post secondary institution?! Oh yeah, I bet your masters wasn’t a lie either. LMFAO. You’re a joke.

“You should move, another reason to un-plant yourself perhaps”

I know you talk is if you’re gay, but asking me to move closer to you is crossing the line. This isn’t one of your chatrooms, old man. No wonder why you’re single.

    **Stop fanboyism; hang VoidBolt**

  10. Kimo says:

OK…I cannot resist jumping in here. Just this once as I am not coming back after I post this, no point.

Someone seems in 1/2 denial with the rest filling up a fine cup of jealousy honestly lol. Get over it IHateYouAll and find a hobby. I came here to find info on the very same PS3 issue spoken of here and all I find, like so many forums, is the resident troll wanker. Zoidbort isn’t much better but I will agree with him saying you react with every reply in a name calling 8 year old time consuming whining tantrum.

Notice how no one else is saying anything or agreeing with you? You are being ignored and just talking to yourself you fool. Being near graduation, you think you would not be taking so much time to construct such long pointless rants via replying to every sentence of a previous post with such lame poorly thought up insults…really. Perhaps your dad is the one you speak of with the degree and you are just 14, shadowing as daddy? Why lie on the internet or accuse others of the same?

Perhaps you should print out all your witty comebacks from this site and try out for comedy central or even better, show it off to your two or three friends of yours so they think you are so cool and extreme. Give it up already, you try waaaaaay too hard and it just shows how transparent your real age is….Christ. Later
