ASUS Eee PC 900A: just like the 901

ASUS seem to be going a little over the top now, they are flooding the market with a range of different Eee PC’s but with not much difference. You only have to look at their latest offering, the ASUS Eee PC 900A. This laptop is much the same as the 901, with just a couple of small changes.
The 900A uses the same case as the 901, but has no Bluetooth and a rubbish .3 megapixel webcam.
All other specs are the same, down to the 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 8 or 16GB SSD and 1GB of RAM.
I do have to wonder why ASUS are trying to flood the market with a range of Eee PC’s, most of which are all the same inside, with just little changes.
The ASUS Eee PC 900A costs €299 ($465), not sure if it is worth it or not, only time will tell.

Asus’s achieved success by designing laptops for a market segment which couldn’t afford nor wanted all of the features, of the expensive offerings. I fit that market segment perfectly. I never used my old computer for DVDs. Since the early 1980s, I’ve used a computer for word-processing, spreadsheets and an occasional database application. I also use the internet.
So, Asus is giving me a range of choices of laptop configurations denied to me before.
It seems to me that reviews are written by people who think a computer’s primary use is to play DVDs, download movies, music, and slideshow images.
I just wish Asus would offer Linux preloaded on every one of their offerings. Linux is a must-have for me. It never gets infected with viruses or malware.
I think that Asus is doing this so that it can cover all other offerings by its competitors. If a netbook buyer sees something he or she likes from the competition, Asus has a choice to offer. I think that this may work well for Asus if it wants to maintain its lead in market share for netbooks.
.3 megapixel webcam? Not on my 900A which I bought from Best Buy. The location for the camera (above the LCD) is covered with white plastic, the factory installed Xandros based OS software cannot find the camera and shows an error message, consumer news sources indicate it was eliminated due to cost constraints, Best Buy admits some models do not have the webcam…. People reading these formwhoring reviews will not be pleased at the extra work you caused by the lack of research into THIS model.
