Sony PS3 2.43 update needed to fix 2.42 firmware

Sony PS3 2.43 update needed to fix 2.42 firmware

By: Daniel Chubb | August 3, 2008 | 150 Comments

It looks like we will need the Sony PS3 2.43 update much sooner than later as it’s needed to fix the 2.42 firmware. We are getting numerous reports that the latest Playstation 2.42 firmware is causing problems for users.

Personally our PS3 is just fine but then we have not had much time with it since the latest firmware. This is what some gamers have reported to PR:

Well this is totally Effed Up!!! My son decided that it would be a good idea to update the PS3 and he did 2 nights ago without me knowing it. Well now ANYTHING BLURAY does NOT play. NOTHING!!! Doesn’t even recognize the DAMN Disk!!! Is there anything I can do???

Installed this newest update and now nothing works, can not read disks at all. We have done the system restore, etc. now have to wait while it gets shipped to Sony to fix it. Very upsetting, fairly new PS3 (5 months) in excellent condition and was working perfectly prior to update. Extremely frustrating.

Yeah, downloaded it earlier and now I can’t stay connected to a single online game.

Downloaded the update and all my saves on cod 4 single player have gone and when I name my perks online as soon as I switch my PS3 off they disappear and have to name them again.

this is BS i got like 200 friends who owns a ps3 and have this update , everything works fine!

  • http://www.bebo.com/ps3-online Alan Harrison

None of those problems seem related to the firmware update. I’m guessing its more of a coincidence. Discs not working is usually a problem with the blu-ray diode, this has been the main cause of Ps3′s breaking. Don’t blame the firmware. The COD4 class not keeping its name is a server problem, again has nothing to do with the PS3. This article sounds a little biased.

This happened to me after the firmware 2.40 update. I was playing Battlefield Bad Company and the screen went blank and then my PS3 wouldn’t read disks. This is a joke if they have mandatory updates and then they break your system, complete BS. My PS3 was only five months old and I just sent it in for repair. I bought a 80gb so I can sell the repaired 40gb when it returns. If I have to do another update and it breaks my console, I will personally find SONY representatives and slit their throats, I’m tired of spending money and having things break.

  • http://wtf-you-gay.com wtf

WTF this is complete bs 4 people out of millions LOL check the official forums budd

  • Derrick

I got the same problem. I was playing NBA 2k8 and the ps3 froze. I just sent my into Sony.

  • Derrick

Oh, I forgot what happened. lol My ps3 wouldn’t read any discs.

  • Martin

    Four unknown people…

  • TheWretched

I really doubt that these problems are FW related. I literally know more than 100 people owning a PS3 and none of those had any problems with 2.42, none.

Especially the BD reading can’t be related, since the BD ROM isn’t updated with those FW updates…

  • http://www.yaguchimari.org prodygee

The hell, all the named stuff happened to MY 5 months old PS3 – that’s months ago :P . Didn’t even notice anything from the update.

-> Damn, DICE, EA, fix the squad system. Nobody can join eachother.

  • Ryan B

yea. must be making it up right?

  • Ryan B

anyone that says it can’t happen to them, I pray it does you halfwitted twits

  • kpdc1

idk how these updates are bricking peoples ps3s i update the first day every update comes out including 2.40 and have never had any problems. Sony just needs to spend more time on there updates and beta them so they wont brick some peoples ps3s, i like the new update trophies load very fast now, all the newer one will have is fix the same problem so nothing new for use people uneffected,
ps does any one know when the uncharted patch is out i want trophies off that game it kicks ass

  • dustinmyles

You guys are looking TOO hard to create hype for a non-existent situation! Sony had ONE firmware problem with 2.4 that affected an EXTREMELY MINIMAL number of consoles (Unlike the 360′s RROD; There’s a 360 exclusive game title that is perfectly apt for the SHEER SCALE in which the RROD scenario transpired: MASS EFFECT. Interestingly enough, there are TWO MORE exclusives Microsoft can brag about: RROD, and MASS EFFECT numerically referencing the RROD!!! Nerd Humor!)
To the matter at hand however, these “people” probably did something REALLY smart when upgrading: i.e. turning the power off, deciding to give their console a relaxing soak in a hot bath, or some other equitably ingenious expression of the0 loving care these “people” tend to show for their electronics!!!

  • nunojedi

Well, check the official forums as you said and you’ll see that THERE ARE a lot of people with this issue.

  • Mornelithe

Agreed, haven’t really heard or seen any issues w/ 2.42 to substantiate these claims…

  • dano

this is bad bad news for sony firmware 2.42 breaking 4 ps3′s!!!!! sony are gonna rush for an update so this doesnt happen again and make it 5 out of 14 million.

i think this is a bit of a 360 fanboy site like come on ye have a full news piece made to report 4 people having problems with the ps3…im sure sony get more calls than that on a regular day.

and for the record the blu ray drive failure is nothing to do with firmware. if that was related to firmware then sony would have had a fix months ago to make sure it never happened to anyone

  • mxpxboy

I know for a fact the Perk names in COD4 isn’t related to the Sony FW updates because mine my perk names have been disappearing since the day COD4 launched. I’ve just learned to deal with it.

  • pixelsword

I am not having any problems… When they get compalints, they should contact people through their PSN to make sure it’s actually people and not bots talking up a storm.

  • Tonny Red Grave

Never had any problems with firmware update(s). My good “old” 60Gb PS3 works perfect!

  • PS3 Fan

well i haven’t heard of those problems but there are others, for me my bluetooth mic doesn’t work when i’m playing Tekken DR or any other online game since the last update.

  • Johan Norberg

Haven´t had any problems whatsoever with my 2.42 version of the firmware. It has optimized my machine by as much as 20% faster menus, it feels like, call it a placebo, if, but it´s a good tweek update.

  • http://www.n4g.com Simon

i just updated my system and is running fine

  • Axe99

The article is questionable at best – for a single FW update to have this range of errors, but only have a _very_ small number of them turn up (assume 10 million PS3s have been updated, you’d be looking at 0.0001 per cent failure rate or thereabouts – not quite RROD proportions) and for all of the problems to be different – statistically, it would be a _very_ strange result. If you’re looking for a FW problem, you’d need at least some consistency in the errors that turn up after the FW update.

You’d also expect a much larger internet response to this – even 0.0001 per cent of PS3 users is a lazy 1000 people, a significant proportion who would be expected to get on the interwebs. If you go for a larger failure rate (and, let’s face it, these kind of problems are unlikely to appear at the 0.0001 per cent level – they’re much more likely to be a 0.01 per cent or higher) then you’ve got 100,000 angry PS3 users – and we’ve heard nothing online from any of them until about a week after 2.42 came out? It’d be a first, that’s for sure!

  • RonWald

“Downloaded the update and all my saves on cod 4 single player have gone and when I name my perks online as soon as I switch my PS3 off they disappear and have to name them again.”

Thats not a FW related problem i had that problem about 2 moths ago, but it sorted itself out :P

  • Will

I had my ps3 update yesterday.. was playing GTA4 before installing it..then straight after it boom..Blurayreader doesn’t work anymore..coincidence you say? not if i read all these topics on the official forums in any country possible as well as this here.. am I really forced to send in my ps3? or should I wait for another update that might “fix” it? jezus..

mind you I didn’t have any problems with 2.40, but really the disc drive failing at the same time of the update isn’t a coincidental event to me.. I mean, I was still playing before I installed it..

  • LifeMoon

Yes, my PS3 does not work with this patch, its got to be a software problem.

  • ernie

Sadly the latest form of attack for the Xbots is to lie about firmware updates messing up their PS3 (which they don’t even own).

There were problems with update 2.4 but the vats majority of the new ones we are hearing about are pure fantasy concocted by children.

  • alz90-

yh man i have the same problem, i cant stay connected to online games, max play is 20mins before a problem occurs and psn signs me out automatically, and it isnt my internet connection. i hve 8meg.

  • bryan

this happened t my ps3, would not play ps3 disc, had to send off.

  • Lamprey69

I”ve updated to 2.42 with absolutley no issue. just wondering what models could have possibly be affected? I have a 60gb (first model out). It’s running faster and smoother than ever. Sounds like alot of the issues mentioned don’t necessarely point to firmware issues. The not reading discs is plausible but not probable.

  • gunnie

This article is absolutely correct. Most PS3s were actually working just fine after the v. 2.41 update, however with the download of v. 2.42 everything has gone haywire. Best thing to do is to wait.

  • Rick_Astley

This is all BS… none of my friends have experience problems with their PS3′s.

  • David

I can’t believe you people that say nothing is wrong. I don’t own an Xbox, I have a broken ps3, and yes I am pissed at you when you say that I am making it up. I hope yours breaks now too, just because you have to act small minded.
My ps3 was my media center, every morning & night I’d play, or watch a movie, worked perfectly. Then after the recent updates, a lot of us had trouble. I hope a dog pisses in yours that don’t believe they made problems with the update.

  • http://www.scea.com Ivan_PSP

I have a 60GB and 80GB PLAYSTATION 3 with with firmware 2.42 i got about 30 Blu-ray Disc movies and i tested about half they all working perfect especially Prison Break on blu ray.

  • http://none Boom4u

Its amazing how people think they can diagnose an issue…..What formal training have you had ?
I have worked in the computer/networking/ IT industry for years, and people always think they know whats wrong or blame it on something that just happened…. My cable went out and mr. smith down the road was digging in his yard, it must be that…

If my ps breaks, I could blame it on the temperature, or global warming, because that just happened around the same time my ps 3 broke…

If you are a pizza driver, deliver pizzas and shut up, if you work in a hardware store, fine, but do not diagnose a piece of equipment you know nothing about… Leave that to the professionals who are trained to doagnose problems. It is true the ps 3 has a known issues with alot of systems haveing diode problems in the PS3′s that will only affect the blu ray drive. but that could have happend when firmware 1.5 or 2.0 was realeased. It would have just been a coincedence…..

Oh wait, my son just walked in the room and now my tv isnt working, it must have been him :)

  • Dopeheadz

WTF!another update again??!!!!piece of SH*T!@#!@!motherF**** i have to leave my console for “Brick my PS3 fw update.” Jeeeeez,, i guess i’ll do it now.

  • klarax

I also believe this is all nonsense, and people saying they have issues are lying. I, and all my friends have a PS3 and everything is fine.

And I’m sure after the last update when some PS3′s went wrong, Sony would have checked and double checked to make sure this update was 100% working before it’s release.

These people are lying, if not, how about some video evidence then?

  • matthew collins

Okay anybody against Sony by saying slit their throats will get fucked up by me. I have updated my PS3 to 2.42 I dont have no problems. These people hat have problems, probly turned the system off during update. Or treat the OS3 like shit and let anybody touch or play it. This article is the most biased piece of shit ever put together. The parent that said their son didnt inform what he was doing with his system and he updated, okay how is that Sony’s or any Sony Reps problems that their kid is not responsible. I find this very funny that when it comes to PlayStation or anything Sony does to help revolutionize the gaming experience by updates these fuckers get on a rant and rave when they are responsible not SONY let me say that again, the people get on and RANT AND RAVE WHEN THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE NOT SONY.

  • puinsai

    @ klarax

I’m not sure if it’s the update that is causing it, but I know different types of problems with the system have been happening. All you need to do is go to youtube and check for yourself….

  • Mark

I installed the 2.42 update last night, and since then my cat has not been eating her food.

Sony please sort your firmware out.

Microsost, please sort your clueless army of Xbots out..

  • nuno

    No problem whatsoever.
Neither with mine nor with all 6 PS3 of close friends.

Bogus news, if you ask me.

  • ScoobaDood

I managed to live through the 2.41 fiasco unscathed but as of the minute I downloaded 2.42, COD4 stopped working with the network. In fact it looks like some sort of IO conflict between the network and BD drivers but I’m not a PS3 HW guru so who knows for sure. I do know that I didn’t power off during the upgrade, and have had no problems to date.

I’m pretty sure that Sony will release a firmware patch that fixes this issue pretty son and I can still play many other games and watch other BDs and DVDs so I’m not stuffed as badly as some others. Hope you guys manage to get your boxes fi
xed up without too much expense or hassle.

In the meantime it’s a shame there are so many pre-pubescent idiots out there who can’t accept that people are having issues with the latest firmware upgrades. I’d like to suggest taht if you don’t have anything constructive to say on the subject, you shut up and leave the conversation to grown ups.

And yes, I mean you Matthew Collins you semi-literate moron. Maybe when your machines turns up its toes, mummy and daddy will decide that it’s about time you got out a little, perhaps attended an anger management class or learnt how to deal with your ‘issues’ in some way other than spamming boards with ill-considered bile. We can only hope.

And ernie and dustinmyles, anyone who finds it easier to believe that this issue is a Microsoft sponsored slur campaign against Sony than that Sony could release a piece of defective software needs to turn off the TV open the door and take a few steps out into the big wide world of reality.

  • TheWretched

David, you are a sore loser… really

I don’t feel anything for you… I mean, you want my PS3 to break, because I don’t think your BD problem and the FW are related? Come on, how immature can you get?

There ARE problems with the BD ROM, but again, I doubt that those are FW related. Dumb coincidence maybe, but then again… You seem to suck, so I don’t care…

  • David

I just ask you to put yourself in my shoes and the others. Going to turn it on and it locks up, or gives you a blank screen. Someone asked for video evidence, that’s funny, they want my blank screen?

Let me word it this this way: I hope that your PS3 doesn’t break, cuz I wish that undeserved feeling on no one.

  • Beta-guy

Thing is every time Sony updates the firmware you always get a crowd saying “oh noes!!! Sony broked my PS3, it doesn’t read discs/play games/can’t connect to internet” there has only be 1 major screw that Sony has done, I think the people who keep complaining about their PS3 breaking are idiots who don’t know what they are doing/talking about or 360 fanboys just trying to cause trouble.

  • BunnySan

Funny… every update brings viral comments to the net… very funny.
Most problems are caused by the customer’s kids themself – maybe inpatience while waiting for the update to get ready… and turning it off BEFORE? Maybe?

  • cheekymonkey

I would like to say my COD4 on ps3 stopped working online after the sony update. It was perfectly fine before it. On reading on other forums i found out that this has been a common problem with this game after the sony update. All my other games work fine online that i have with my PS3.

  • Will

Okay let’s make this clear once and for all.

I’m NOT a kid who was messing with the PS3 whilst it was updating. I am NOT an Xbox 360 fanboy who wants to cause trouble (I’m very neutral about this subject). HOWEVER, my PS3 is still messed up. My only possible answer to this is to link it to the firmware. The socalled coincidental event of users messing up their console (as well as the similar symptoms all over the world) is total bullshit. Let’s try to see the serial numbers of the PS3′s? Who knows it’s build related, some types might get messed up, others might not?

One thing is sure though, my PS3 is pretty much blind and there seems to be no way of getting it fixed other than sending it back to Sony (warranty covered, hoorah! Still it were better not to send it at all !). Video evidence you say? I’ll provide it with much delight and grief, just to make you “grownups” shut up. There are people out there having problems with their PS3′s, for god’s sake acknowledge this as it’s been a problem in the past!

Another thing, I managed to make it through the 2.40 update safely, and as soon as I heard about yet another new update, 2.42, I downloaded it and let it install, only to find out my bluray drive won’t read anything anymore, as stated in my previous post here. I’m one of the guys hoping for a quick fix, or at least some light in this dark tunnel, meaning Sony should inform us whether it is actually a bug in the firmware releases (for certain types of PS3′s) or just a mere “coincident”.

  • daniel brown

i update date my ps3 with 2.42 if work for abit..then i wanted to watch a blue ray movie or dvd, it work fine one day, then next day nothing work.. only my ps3 games.

  • Jordan B.

It has made my connection to online games suck

  • Frustrated

My PS3 is 8 mths old, the 40 gig Asian Hong Kong white version. Updated from firmware 2.4 to 2.42 last night and totally lost my blu-ray drive function immediately after patching. Now I can’t play any of my PS3 games, even DVD discs don’t work. System simply doesn’t know that a disc has been inserted. This is really frustrating… They better come out with 2.43 fast to fix this so I can complete my Devil May Cry 4 game.

  • gridbug

I’m 39 years old. I take very good care of my electronics. I don’t have kids (yet). Bought a pre-owned 20GB PS3 off someone back in Feb 08. It was in immaculate condition. Never had a single problem or issue with it at all. Until this weekend. I can’t recall if it was specifically after 2.42 that I got the “no disc read” issue, but it was definitely after 2.41 for sure. As of this weekend (updated to 2.42 a few days back with no problems in gameplay/Blu-ray playback etc) my PS3 no longer reads/recognizes any kind of disc whatsoever. I get the “working bubble” in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but the disc doesn’t appear in the XMB. This is NOT a phantom issue, and if it’s a “coincidence” that so many of us are experiencing this (and at an increasing rate) then maybe OJ really WAS 100% innocent after all and Dubya is truly the greatest president this country has ever seen.

I don’t have the warranty option, so it’s either send the unit in and shell out the money to get it fixed, or wait for a possible firmware update to correct the problem.

My question is this: what do they do at the Sony repair center to correct this problem? Is it firmware related, or is it simple mechanical failure? Can anyone with tech experience sound off on this? Why are so many of us all of a sudden having variations on the same problem in the span of a few months?

Yes, this is a real problem. As I stated before, I’m super careful with my stuff and know better than to shut the console off during an update, etc. I’m happy for those of you who aren’t suffering this frustration, and hope that you won’t have to. Or in the least, that if it happens to you Sony will already be on top of the issue instead of shrugging it off and happily collecting 150.00 a pop for the trouble.

C’mon Sony. We deserve better than this.

  • John

Im having problems with my PS3 cause of firmware my PS3 can´t run any BluRay dvd and cd runs ok.

I hope Sony fix this, this is very bad.

  • Grish

Been very happy with my PS3 and haven’t had any issues with firmware 2.40 or 2.41.
2.42 however hasn’t been too solid. I haven’t had any issues with BD movie playback. But Internet has been freezing pretty consistently and my most recent purchase of Soul Calibur IV has been nearly unplayable. Game locks up everytime it’s played, and the system will not shut itself off without being done manually by the switch on the back. Gotten Corrupted Data indicators, and the PS3 will consistently not recognize that the game is even in the drive.

2.42 Or Bad Copy Of Soul Calibur IV??
Own copies of GT Prologue and MLB 08 The Show and no issues with these games to date…

  • archedzaphire

I read the posts and decided to see for my self I don’t watch bdvd’s that often “Narnia” is the newest one I own and it plays as it always does……..however ,my ps3 does freeze while Im online quite often if
not that ..its constantly running out of memory since my update to 2.42

  • joe

My ps3 also has stopped working and does not recognize any discs now. I know not to turn the ps3 off during updates and everything was completely installed. My screen went blank while i was playing cod4 the the ps3 reset and was not able to read any discs. I have the original ps3 60 gig and have never had a problem until now. I’m an electronic freak and love sony products and have no reason to lie about my situation. You just need to do a little more reading and see that this problem is bigger than just you and your friends. just because theirs works does not mean people aren’t having problem. So get off sony nutts becuz it is possible for them to make a mistake. they admitted their mistake for the 2.40 update but it just took a while. Soon they’ll see they messed up here too

  • Lizard Man

My PS3 started freezing up after the update. I did a full restore which took 4 hours and its still freezing. While playing CoD4 the sound will stop, you can keep playing but you can’t hear anything. Then the game will try to load new areas but it will get all weird and then freeze. MGS4 freezes on load screens and GTA IV freezes just whenever. Sony better patch through an update to fix this because I’m not paying $150 for them to fix something that’s there fault!

  • Kevin

Sony come on make a new update i didint spend 538 dollaer for nothing

  • Will

500 dollars? Are you kidding me? That’s CHEAP over here in Europe. Here we pay €500 ! That’s the same amount of money for a PS3 in the USA but with a different currency! You pay $500 approx, we pay €500, in the end, we pay like $900, so don’t go there! :X My console was way more pricey and f***ed up as well now! :(

  • AaRoN

this is bs when i finished updating my ps3 i turned it off then the next day i turned it on and it doesnt read any disk’s

  • david

Bought my PS3 in Feburary 08…never had a single problem. Updated to 2.42 last night, and now it won’t read discs…maybe I’m the 5th person.

  • JOEmama

Why are people so closed minded? The reports on this issue are rampid if you check some forums out.

Its not make believe or XOBOX fanboy crap.

As for the so called IT guy “Boom4U” you are telling me there is zero corellation to a piece of equipment working fine, a software update is made, and then a huge influx of reports saying discs cant be read? You dismiss the firmware update as a cause for malfunctions…but give no plausible reason why all of a sudden people cant read their discs.

And for you people saying we are lying because yours works fine and so does your neighbors…….with that logic i guess HIV and Cancer doesnt exist because you are not diagnosed with the disease.

  • gabriel

i got no audio from games after the 2.42 update, bluray where fine only games got no audio, i did a system restore and that fix the bug

  • Blue

I’m one of the unlucky PS3 owners, whose console died earlier this week. Reading forums around the world, it seems that a lot of the people who have experienced problems with the Blu Ray drive after the update were playing COD4 at the time of the update. The thread seems to be that they started the update, played COD4. While they were playing, the sound disappeared. A hard boot was then needed (switch at the back) after the game hung. Once switched back on, the Blu Ray player was no longer functioning correctly.

I find it incredible that a company like Sony finds it acceptable to supply refurbished games consoles in place of malfunctioning units for a problem that, with mounting evidence, they caused with an essential system update. A lot of people take very good care of their consoles and it is easy to understand why they would be unhappy exchanging a 5 month old console that has been well taken care of, for a, potentially, much older console with only a 3 month warranty. This is like taking your brand new car in for its first ever oil change, the mechanic causes damage to the car so that it no longer works, but the garage saying that it will replace your brand new car with a second hand model, with 100000miles on the clock. Not the best situation to be in and not a situation that I would accept.

By the way, I’m in France; I took the console back to the shop where I bought it last night. The owner is now negotiating with his supplier for a full refund so that I can get myself a brand new console. How’s that for customer service!!

  • Karma

This happened to me this morning. I was configuring my wireless connection and it said that an update was required. I downloaded and installed 2.42. After rebooting, everything seemed to be working fine. Then I inserted a game disk. It started to run the game. Suddenly I got Error 800…. blah, blah. I didn’t write down the error code. Then I rebooted it again. Thinking, humm, maybe there was some kind of load error for game disk. At this point. Inserting a disk is like sticking it in a protective sleeve. No effect whatsoever. I used to love my PS3 — now I hate it. Out of desparation, I reformatted my hard drive, and reset factory defaults. There is no way to rollback/restore to the previous version. Poor design. They should have tested their software/firmware better. Now I have a very expensive boat anchor.
For those of you laughing, something equally painful will happen to you one day. There is karma in this world.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Sony CS. The first guy I talked to took my information, listened to my explanation about the specifics of the problem (following 2.42 update got audio dropouts, and then my system failed to recognize any discs whatsoever) and he was very polite, then asked if he could transfer me to someone who could help me with the problem. Wasn’t sure what to make of that, so I agreed and he put me on the line with a girl who I found out later in the conversation was “upper level customer service” and not technically a supervisor. Long story short, I explained my situation to her, including how I’d gotten the 20GB system off eBay in Feb 08 and that the warranty was long since expired. She was sympathetic and said that they’re aware of the problem with the latest firmware update, but that since I was out of warranty it would cost 149.00 to send my system in and get a replacement unit. I told her that I didn’t think that was fair, and that if I’d broken my console then I’d be more than happy to pay the cost of repair/replacement, but since this problem was caused by Sony’s firmware update, I didn’t see why I’d have to essentially pay for their mistake. She said she understood and agreed (!) and put me on hold while she checked to see what they could do for me. A couple minutes later she came back on the line and told me that she’d gotten authorization to issue me a “gesture of goodwill” and waive the 149.00 cost, that the shipping box should reach me within 3 to 5 business days, and that I should receive a replacement unit within 10 to 14 business days upon returning my broken console.

I also asked her if she knew if there was any sort of update fix planned, similar to what happened with 2.40 and she said that she had no information on that. Not sure if that’s what she was told to say, as she did seem to be sticking to the script for the most part, but on the whole she was very helpful and gracious, and I could tell that she was happy that I was satisfied with the end result. Even though she claimed she had no info on a fix for the update, it wouldn’t hurt to inquire about it when you call. If anything, it might motivate them to get on the stick with it. All in all, it was a pretty positive experience, considering that I half expected I was gonna have to go in with guns blazing. I’ve always believed that being firm but polite (and doing some research ahead of time) really pays off… in this case, it did. At least until I get my replacement unit and we see what happens. Note to the rest of you who are out of warranty of your console: the replacement has a 90 day warranty. Not the best, but better than nothing.

While it makes me kind of sad that I have to part ways with my 20GB console (I’ve developed a strange attachment issue it seems?) it’s nice to know that Sony is taking ownership of the problem and is (finally) willing to do right by their customers.

So that’s my story. Please keep posting your experiences, good or bad. The more info we can arm ourselves with, the better our chances at victory.

  • alz

is it just me or is online play messed up aswell because of this firmware update?

  • Stephen

I recently purchased a PS3 80GB Limited Edition Metal Gear Bundle and after successfully setting up a wired Internet connection and registering online through the Ethernet cable attached to my modem/router, I downloaded the 2.42 update via my PC and a removable jump drive, and installed it into my PS3. Now I am unable to go online through my PS3 as I keep getting a DNS error. I restored my settings to the default settings (didn’t reformat the HDD), but still found that 2.42 was still alive and kicking, and am still unable to access the Internet nor the PlayStation Network. Since it seems that reformatting the HDD doesn’t return the PS3 firmware to its just-out-of-the-box state (according to previous posts), I guess that I will just wait until the next firmware update comes out and hope that it corrects the problem that 2.42 created.

  • chris hampton

ONE MORE PS3 BRICKED BY 2.42 FIRMWARE. Playing Fight Night Round3 when first the sound cut out, then I got the never ending loading screen. Hit the PS button and tried to quit game but nothing. Used the PS button to turn off and after restart, it will not recognise any discs. Tried PS3, Blueray, Regular DVD, PS2 (I have an 80g), PS1, and audio cd’s. The discs go in but don’t load or even show up on the screen. GREAT JOB ON THE UPDATE SONY!!! I didn’t like the fact that they seemed to put out an update every 2 weeks. Next time test your new firmware out longer before releasing it. I think we can wait a month for the extra “turn system off” icon.

  • mak

I think there’s a direct correlation with updating the firmware to screwing up the system of PS3s. And being in the Philippines, I’m not covered by the warranties enjoyed by other countries. Even the Sony Service Centers here are not authorized to honor the warranties. Which really sucks. There are a lot of undeniable instances where updating the firmware via internet damages the unit. It can’t be just a coincidence that my PS3 broke down right after I installed this 2.42 update (I haven’t even played yet). I looked around the internet and it didn’t happen just to me. Shouldn’t Sony do something about this?
oh, and by the way, My unit is only 2 weeks old. I haven’t even played 2 levels of metal gear solid 4 yet.
I made some searching in various website and it is conceivable that updating the PS3 firmware has the risk of damaging the lens. No idea why though.

  • Gutwrenchfacebuster

Since 2.42 the ps3 won’t switch on with the PS button, need to use the power switch nearly every time. It keeps losing it’s connection in online mode, and has properly crashed a few times.
None of these things has happened ONCE before 2.42. The fact that even a handfull of people are reporting the same problems since this update is proof enough for me.
Also, to anyone who says there’s no way the firmware update could cause it to stop reading blu-ray discs cos the thingy has no connection to the so and so blah blah SHUT UP. Anyone who has worked/played with computers and technology for long enough knows that they do stuff that shouldn’t happen, it always has, and the more complex technology gets the more it will happen.

  • Cajunspirit

So yeah, I bought an 80GB PS3 for Christmas.

I played it off and on, keeping it in relatively good condition.

I beat Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden, Call of Duty 4 all good and fun with NOT ONE FREEZE.

I bought GTA IV 2 months ago, hardly played it. It never froze on me. CoD4 online is all I have been playing for the past month and a half.

After recently updating to Firmware 2.42 and playing a little GTA IV, which froze on me. I could not read Blu Ray disks anymore.

I slap in a 300 dvd and disks start reading again. However, PS3 games no longer work, or if they do not for long.

I squarely blame the problem with the Firmware update. We don’t play the PS3 here long enough for the Diode to burn out :(

  • dice

same problem here in buffalo, PS3 will not read any disks !!!!! wtf think ill call my lawyer !

  • Ace

Are yall retarded. All this is puure BS. There is not ONE update that is mandatory. If you dnt want a ps3 update dnt update ya ps3. If you dnt want a game update to keep the way it is, press circle and keep playin the way you want. Learn to read whats on the screen.

  • Cajunspirit

Ace, nobody EXPECTED this nonsense to happen!
How the hell were we supposed to know it would affect us adversely?

  • kotah

This PS3 Is the biggest waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine is only 2 months old, set perfectly within air space and the P.O.S fan wont kick on anymore. I get to play one game of COD4 online and it loeses sound then f-ing freezes completely. I cant even play 5 minutes of a game either on or off line. Probbably the most pathetic thing sony has came out with. Pretty sad you spend 500 dollars for two months of playing and 200 dollars on accesories. All you guys saying its BS either your lucky or it has not happened yet!

  • Ludwig Morales

i just don’t get why some people talk about how little percentege got affected, duddesss!! if it were your PS2 you where fu**** with $500 bucks or so you would’nt give a crap if others work.

Simple thing… lots of PS3 where fine just after an update, people has being updating for more than a year or so, all of the sudden a group turn stupid and screew the update process…. that’s really your argument… cooommeee onnnnn!!!

I really expect a company like sony to step up and solve this issue, would have expect microsft to behave like sony is doing now!!

    my 2 cents

  • chris dennis

I did not have any problems with the 2.40 or the 2.41 updates, but after updating to 2.42 my ps3 started locking up and now it cannot read the BD at all acts as if it is not there at all. In the past I have built several computers and the ps3 is basically a computer. you can disable drives on a computer using software and I believe that this is what has happened on this last update. I have not yet contacted sony about my problem with the BD drive because I am reading the posts for information. would like to fix this problem without the hassle of sending my ps3 back to sony even though mine is still under warranty. mine is 9 months old. too mant people having this problem to be coincidence.

  • Navin

did the version 2.42 update about 2 weeks ago. Now the ps3 console will not read any game discs etc at all. Blue indicator light does come on when discs are inserted. Tried enabling disc auto start etc but to no avail. Also did a reset to system defaults but this was not successful as well. It is the original 60gb launch console and I have been updating this console regularly with all the updates the moment they became available from original 1.60 onwards and had no problems prior 2.42 The system worked perfectly before 2.42 was installed. It is sad to see the manner of response of some out there who believe that there is a campaign of sorts against PS3 but, this is very unfair as this IS A GENUINE PROBLEM. Please be mature enough to accept this although there is a minority reporting this problem with version 2.42 Does anyone know if version 2.43 or higher will solve this problem when released.

  • Cajunspirit

    We can only hope Navin….

  • ps3811

I think the cant see blurays is because you have to go to videos to see the disk

  • Kazer16

I have a 40G PS3 and only this morning did it start to refuse to take any disc that I put in. Once I was able to insert a disc it wouldn’t load it. I think my update was done last week. I turned off the unit for about 20 mins then turned it back on obly then would it allow me to insert a disc. I am thinking about sending it back to Sony as it is still under warrenty, only 4 months old.

  • http://gdggfddfd.com jon

Um does your ps3 turn on because if it turns on and theres a blank screen then it might mean your display settings is set to hdmi when it should be set to something else mine did this to me to reset the settings i did it manually without a picture right when your ps3 starts wailt a while for it to start then hold left then hit right once then hold down for a sec or two then hit up four times you should be highlighting display settings but you wont see it of course then hit X then hit X again go down 2 for the cord the ps3 came with or just hit X again for hdmi I did this flawlessly my first time i just had to close my eyes and imagine it. But other then that my bad ass super computer ps3 works better then that vcr x-box360 . lol you know whats better then an x-box360 an nes a sega a snes an atari just about anything that powered on and worked lol.

  • Jake

Yeah updated to 2.42 just because. Don’t care about these trophy things. Honestly don’t know what 2.42 is supposed to address. I just know that a few games I would play albeit PS2 games (only ps2 ones have this issue atm) no longer work and the system locks up and must be restarted to do anything. Not omg zomg PS3 sucks, simply an annoyance. Most likely an oversite somewhere in the software causing some conflict. However, it is true that this update has caused some, if only minor for me, issues.

  • sho222

I have the same issue reported by a lot of people here. I insert a disc and nothing happens. I can’t hear it spinning or anything (although it ejects fine). The little “working” bubble in the upper-right of the screen just spins. I’ve tried with several movies and one game (I only have 2 games). At first I thought it was a bad disc from Netflix, but after trying other discs, it seems like it’s a general problem with the drive. I upgraded to 2.42 just before I noticed this happening… I didn’t realize the upgrade might be related to the problem until reading this and other forums… sad. Now I have to decide whether to send the PS3 in for repairs or wait for another firmware upgrade (ugh). Anyone know anything about when 2.43 is expected?

  • http://www.jguru.com rightletterb

microsoft this go stone ocean dog day minor

  • Skyline_Mad

I have the Disc read problems aswel, since the 2.41 Firmware i havn’t been able to play blu-ray games/movies, at first it was only every now and then, but now i can hardly ever get a game to work (PS2 games and DVDs work fine), i wanna play GTA4 and a load of other games but cant as they wont play.

When i put a Blu-Ray disc in the drive, i hear a sound like its trying to read the disc (or trying to spin the disc), then for about a minute it will keep making the sound (every few seconds) and not get anywhere, eventualy the loading thing in the corner of the screen disappears and no disc appears in the XMB game menu.

I have the Launch 60GB PS3 (UK) , i’ve heard that it could only be a problem with these consoles, i cant remember where i read that now though.

I dont want to hear anyone calling BS, because the same day as i updated to 2.41 (or 2.42, i cant remember which one, it wasnt the latest one, it was the one before that), i get this problem, a few days later i find a few people with the same problem, can’t be a coincidence, and i’m not making this up.

  • Cajunspirit

I have an 80gb Motorstorm bundle pack, so no it is not limited to 60gb models

  • alfie

since i got the FW update my system keeps crashing and then its fine then it crashes!! good thing i’m getting an xbox for my bday =) good old microsoft

  • Blake

This isn’t a coincidence, my PS3 could read games fine and then when i went to play online i received a prompt asking me to update to the latest firmware (2.42) and after the installation had completed, none of my games could be read.
So instead of having a go at people, get your facts straight.

  • mychal

well for starters i have a 60gb ps3 i bought a year ago and up to the 2.42 update i havent had a single problem, but now that i have gotten this latest update itll freeze after 10-15 min’s when im using the internet browser, and itll freeze randomly during game play, and I constantly get disconnectied form games then it’ll freeze when i try to get out of that server, the only games ive tried so far are GRID and BattleField : bad company, and Warhawk(downloaded version), and TF2 those are really the only games ive played since i got the update, another thing when it freezes during gameplay i have to hard reboot it, but when it freezes when in on the browser itll reset itself after about 30seconds

  • guggen

once i downloaded 2.42 the text on my ps3 turned from crystal clear to extremley foggy and then after i watched family guy blue harvest it shuts off by itself after about 10 minutes of play.

  • Masterofallz

LOL, 4 PEOPLE OUT OF 15 MILLION? LOL!
    The article is biased… :/
Also, the broswer freezes because the flash player is crap. We need adobe to make a Flash Player 9 SDK…

  • Chicago PS3 Owner

Another example here of someone who had a working 40GB PS3 one day, and stopped reading discs the next. Barely ever use it compared to most people.

That’s a lot of cash to pay for something that absolutely does not work now.

    WTF Sony???

  • http://wwww.product-reviews.net jonathan

yeah i am another person with this issue its killing me my discs load occasionally not alot its pissing me right of i love my ps3 its the bst console ive ever had :[

  • Ed

Just updated my 80G system a few weeks ago, played games & bluerays fine for a while, then yesterday it’s failing to recognize any disks at all (bd/games/dvds)… apparently the 2.42 update is causing the loading hardware to fail somehow (according to other forums). At any rate this failure mode seems to be real enough to me (BTW I’m 39 and the ps3 is the _least_ expensive piece of AV equipment I own, so I assure you I take excellent care of the system and couldn’t care less about fan-boyism)

  • djextreme

In my last post i reported that the firmware 2.42 was not working, by not letting me play play my dvd or blue ray movies, or let me access the xmb screen while playing a game to send message to friends… Now after a while or trying to sort it i sold all my blue ray movies because i though it was a waste of time having them if it dont play them. Now a few have past i am gutted i have sold them because there is nothing wrong with 2.42 all you need to do and i wish i tryed it earlier lol.. is to back up your game saves to a usb flash drive or any other storage device and quick format the ps3.. Now having tryed that it all works 100%..

  • the mutt

I bought my PS3 40gb used and with a broken Blu-ray laser really cheap, bouhgt a new laser on ebay and installed it. It worked flawlessly until I updated to 2.42, it worked before but right after the update it refuses to load any discs again!

I have bought a new laser but are waiting to install it until the next update, it might fix the problem, like someone said earlier, it’s just like a computers BIOS but unlike a BIOS you can’t change drive setings and such.

  • Jas

hi everone my ps3 has no problem its at 2″42 update and its a 80 gb thank god mines not broken

  • JOEmama

Ok well all know this not an XBOX fanboy issue trying to talk crap on PS3. This is a genuine issue thats happening.

To fix the issue Instead of jsut blogging here or complaining to Sony( i am sure they are aware of the complaints) why dont we band together and mass email Game makers and Movie (blu ray) distribution companies and tell them WE ARE NOT GOING TO BUY ANY BLU RAY MOVIES OR PS3 GAMES until Sony fixes this!!!!! I

Its been three weeks and I still havent even found any clue that they are even trying to fix this with any kind of firmware update announcement or anything. Not even a statement from Sony acknowledging the issue.

And its not jsut a threat becasue i know i dont plan on wasting 60 bucks on a game if my PS3 cant even read it because Sony put zero quality control into their firmware updates.

Anyone know what companies to target and hopefully a list of links where we can email them? If anyone comes up with that list I will be happy to post a paragraph or something that people can copy and paste…or alter for personal touch.

  • gridbug

From the official PS3 forum thread:

    KINGDUCK1 wrote:

I spoke with Sony again today (been on the phone with them since Wed. the 20th) and finally someone game me some explanation of what had happened to my system since the 2.42 update.

It seems that the 2.42 update has caused problems with the LOADING HARDWARE in our systems and that’s why we are having these problems.

They said when we send our systems in to get fixed they are going to swap out the HARDWARE WITH NEW HARDWARE.

NOTE: FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND ARE OUT OF WARRANTY DO NOT LET THEM TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU BY TELLING YOU THAT YOU NEED TO PAY $150.

SONY PUT THE FIRMWARE UPDATE OUT THERE FOR THE SYSTEMS, SO IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ONLINE YOU HAVE TO UPDATE. THEREFORE SONY HAS CAUSED THE PROBLEM TO OUR SYSTEMS WITH THIS UPDATE AND THEY SHOULD WAVE THE FEES FOR THIS NIGHTMARE OF PROBLEM!!!!!!!! ASK TO TALK TO THE SUPERVISOR AND STAY FIRM AND TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS.

And no, I’m not a fanboy troll. I’m just a PS3 owner who got bricked by the 2.42 update. Contacted Sony a couple weeks back, explained the situation (I was out of warranty on my 20GB console) and they authorized a “good faith” repair/exchange. Received my new replacement 20GB on Monday with 2.35 installed on it, updated to 2.42 and have had zero issues so far. *knock wood*

So yes, all you who are still suffering with this issue, sending your console to Sony is the quickest fix at this point. Not sure if 2.50 is going to remedy this problem.

    Good luck!

  • the mutt

After having a look at the TVguide and finding nothing of interest I decided to replace my laser after all and now my PS3 is working again! :D But I still it has somethong to do with the update, maybe its realigning the laser or something and some of our consoles goes nuts after?

  • John

I’ve installed this software 2.42 and never had any problems apart from my brains falling out of my nose while waiting for the install, awesome machine

IF U DO KNW WATS DA PROB HALA AT ME ON MY EMAIL ADDRESS kenyon.milne@hotmail.com. A.S.A.P THANX

  • http://chaosguardians.net Will

Kenyon, I suggest you get some capslock control first. There was no need for that now was there? As for your friend’s problem, I don’t think any of us has sufficient technological knowledge regarding the ps3′s hardware nor the firmware. I suggest he sends it back (if he’s under warranty) or to at least explain it in a more calm and fashionable way.

That being said I’d like to tell all of you the easiest way to get it fixed (whether it is due to 2.42 or not) to have it sent back, whether you’re still under warranty or not. Sitting here and waiting for a patch to fix it won’t do. I have been told that the firmware caused the loading hardware to fail inside the bluray bay itself. Waiting for 2.43 to fix this will not do! I sent mine back little under 2 weeks ago and am waiting its return. Best of luck to all of you unlucky out there. Let’s hope this won’t be happening again in the future.

PS: A good word of advice, other than saying backup your stuff. Note your serial number of the PS3! This way you can check whether they stuff you up with a refurbed PS3 or your very own console! I did, if they send me a refurb at least I’ll have proof they sent me a different console for when it breaks down (ever again)!

  • Scott

For some reason, lots of people didn’t have problems with the 2.42 update, but lots did. I’m one of the victims. Mine is hardly used and has never even seen a movie disc yet. The only thing that was really ever played on it was GTA4. Never a problem….not even a hint of one. Then…..BAM!! Along comes 2.42 and it won’t even recognize the game! For those of you that are OK, please don’t claim the rest of us are full of B.S. when we most certainly are not. It’s ludicrous to think of this as coincidence too, as there are far, far too manyh people complaining about the identical thing. Sony has rendered these units virtually useless and had better come up with a quick solution at no expense to the consumer. Other wise, another class-action lawsuit is looming……..I can feel it.

What this has done for me is make up my mind ahead of time in which direction to lean when the future brings us the next round of new gaming consoles. Guess which way I’m NOT leaning to………..

My mate just updated his to 2.42 and it doesnt recognise any disk.
it was working fine until he went online for first time and updated to 2.42

my ps3 firmware right now is 2.30.I have been using 2.30 ever since updated it from MGS4 and I never have any problem with it. (only1 time hang when watching youtube) After reading all the comment in this page, i think i will stick with my current firmware until the release of 2.43. Lets hope that the 2.43 WILL solve this BD issue once and for all.

my mate contacted sony and they said bring to retailer and exchange.
they also said if retailer couldnt exchange they would make other arrangements to replace.
my own one works fine as well. its just certain models

  • Drew

Well my ps3 jjust stopped working after the damn 2.42 update, during a game of GTA4. I was so pissed off I took this black box of junk out to the woods and proceeded use my mossburg 500A 12 gauge to solve the problem of not reading any type of disc. It was the best i felt since it broke. Best damn therapy ever

  • Jesse

I bought my PS3 in March 08 and I’ve kept up with all the updates. When I updated to 2.42 the PS3 wouldn’t read disks anymore. So mine broke within 5 months, it was a 20 gig model also. I love sony.

Mt PS was working fine with 2.41 it downloaded 2.42 yesterday now i cant save from any PS2 games my blu-ray plays fine. But anything doing with an PS2 is bricked.

    PS3 40 Gig 2.42 problems – COD4

My roommate has a PS3, a 40 gig ripoff model (Ripoff is IMO; I like backwards compatability), I have a 60 gig launch model, I have never had a problem with a firmware update, but after the debacle with the last one, I decided to look around online before I updated. My roommate came in while I was reading about the suck that is 2.42 on qj.net. Before I even noticed him, he updated, put in his borrowed copy of COD4, and proceeded to start complaining that the disc was broken. I perked up and told him to try a different disc which did not work either. Long story short, his PS3 won’t play any sort of disc, and a mere half hour prior it had been playing soul cali 4 like a champ. The moment the firmware was installed, we had a dead ps3. Because we are stationed in south korea at the moment, Sony refuses to send us a coffin(a.k.a a return box) and he has no way of taking advantage of sony’s generous ps3 fixing offer. I’ve had my 60gig for a long time, it’s out of warranty, and I am honestly afraid to update. I’m not a 360 fanboy. The 360 is made of infinitely more fail than Sony’s ever considered putting out in a single product. (that includes my crappy minidisc player I bought that I was SOOO sure was gonna be the next big thing)

If anyone has any useful information regarding what systems have and haven’t been affected by this, please email me at retry2@gmail.com.

Also, I hope you take my putting my REAL email address here as a show of faith, I know I’m gonna get hate mail for this.

(Also has anyone else noticed a link between this occurrence and COD4? I would love to feel confident updating my ps3, knowing all I had to do was keep one game away from it, I miss my DLC dearly)

  • http://SonyPS32.43updateneededtofix2.42firmware Sammy

I too had problems after downloading update 2.42, we tried all the usual tricks like formating and even a hard reset but still games would not load, so we tried downloading the update from a PS3 website on a PC onto a USB memory stick and updated the PS3 from that and you’ll never guess but it works fine now, for all you folks having problems it’s worth a try

  • Cajunspirit

    Attempted Sammy’s suggestion…
My PS3 claims that the no applicable media was found :( :( :(

  • Joemama

I also tried SAMMY’s “trick” and I get a message saying ” no applicable media found) . Looks like you cant re-install 2.42 once isntalled? SAMMY are you sure this is what you did?

  • http://SonyPS32.43updateneededtofix2.42firmware Sammy

This is important if trying to download update version 2.42 useing a USB memory stick over the top of already installed version 2.42, A folder must be created called PS3 (in capital letters) in that folder create another folder called UPDATE (again in caps) into that put your downloaded update file then plug into your PS3 and it should see it.

  • Geni

Some people are clueless, no issue lol. Mine dies after the 2.42 update, now no longer reads disks. Check the forums, yes do that hundreds of posts on a ton of sites seems a little more than a few people to me. There is an Issue and Sony needs to admit it. This is not the first time they botched an update.

  • Cajunspirit

Did all of that Sammy, I know how it works.

I have an 80gb MotorStorm Bundle pack, what is yours?

  • JOEmama

SAMMY…i had the PC donwloaded update on my USB stick with the appropiate folders and names……that trick did not work. I have the original launch PS3 20GB model.

I really think we are beating a dead horse here. I really dont think you can re-install an updated PS3 with the same frimware update file. Maybe you had your PS3 updated with 2.41 and you updated to 2.42 with your memory stick?

  • Sammy

This definately worked for me, I have a brand new 80GB ps3 less than two weeks old and before I had even played a game or watched a film I had installed the latest update 2.42 ,which the screen was telling me to do, I was a bit hasty and should have checked out my system first, this is what I eventially did to sort out my problem,,,
Save any game data via external memory device and quick format hard disk,do a hard reset (hold down start button on ps3 for about 5 seconds after 3 bleeps it turns off) turn back on and do set up as from new, reinstall firmware as in previous message via usb stick ( it WILL install ver 2.42 over again because it asks you if this is sure that you want to do this,”joemama”) you say yes and let it do its thing, once finished restart system and see if all OK
My system was not loading certain games before like GT5 and after this it was fine ..this was my story if it does’nt work for you at least you can say you tried,,

  • Retry2

I can verify that the PS3 DOES allow you to install the same firmware you are currently running, by following sammy’s instructions exactly, I DID reinstall the firmware from a flash drive, but my buddy’s 40 gig is still not reading disc’s. Thank you Sammy for giving us something new to try though!

i can verify the ps3 will NOT re-update on my mates machine. i have tried everything and more. must be just certain models will not re-update

Chuck Norris touched my PS3,, it never needs a firmware update.

  • youknowme

I have a 60g launch model and have never had problems with any updates. Don’t know what the difference is between models (except for obvious) but the problem must be there.

  • Tanu

I bought (2) PS3 a 60g (11 months old) and a 80g (6 months old) both systems stop playing Blu-Rays and games. Both systems were hardly used. The problems began shortly after playing GTA and a couple of blu-ray movies. Yesterday updated both system and complete system restore. Problem remains. Any tips? Lost my sales receipt now out over $800.00.

  • JOEmama

I tried every trick in the book ( firmware 2.42 re-install, harddrive reformat, hard reset , demo launch XMB initiation, ) everything short of buying and replacing the bluray drive

After the lame firmware 2.43 “update” didnt fix the problem i finally called Sony. I explained the problem, that I had a out of warranty 20GB launch PS3 system…. after talking to a couple of people they explained they know about this issue and are sending me shipping materials to get it fixed. All for free!

I should have had more faith in Sonys customer service weeks ago! If only their R&D department was so reliable and customer orientated.

  • Liam

Well, my PS3 stopped reading disks about a hour ago, second PS3 i’ve had in 7 months too, last one got sent back for same reason. so im currently waiting for 2.43 to finish updating. Hope this solve my problem, i’d hate to have to go through a thrid PS3 in just 7 months.

Just for the record, less than a month old PS3. Ventilated area. New games. Was able to play Metal Gear Solid 4 fine. Updated to what I believe was 2.40 (or 2.41, not sure) and the game started to freeze after playing for sometime. Only happening with MGS but I am not playing a lot of games either.

I don’t really care about Xbox or PS3 stupid fights. I care about playing my games.

I have to say that it is really strange that Sony has released three updates in such a short time. Will try 2.43 after I see the comments on it. Or maybe I should just call Chuck Norris =)

Listen this was not the update!!!! I got disc read error and found out that certain modle were sold with faulty B Ray drive probaly bought in China. Have your ever notice that theres a seagate hard drive and got bluetooth and windows media player ect. Once you start putting other companies products in your products then it becomes a race to find low prices and still try to get good products in return. I chalk this up as Sony bad judgement in buying these bad B Ray drives. I got my ps3 back from Sony a month ago and all seems fine… THIS WAS NOT REFERBISHED IT WAS MY PS3. Quality Assurance passed and everything. I was lucky and had waranty if you dont they will fix it for $150 or if your a do it your self like me you can buy B RAY drive on internet and install yourself . Try u tube video search for installation process. It looked quite easy. I hope that for the time it took me to write this on ps3 wit no key board that this helps someone. PSN — BIGbass531876

lol look at all these clever consumerist complaints; you guys are so cool with your customer is always right approach. maybe you should take that metality and go work in retail for a while.
these firmwares are very much a work in progress and their development is far from straightforward; look back at the initial psp firmwares, and now look at what they’ve managed to add. if you can emulate a ps1 game on a psp, i imagine the possibility is there to emulate ps2 games on for example a 20gb model ps3.
try to think of yourselves as beta testers, if you were smart you’de read the changelogs for these firmware updates and evaluate whether its worth updating immediately; or waiting it out just incase an issue arises – which sony would eventually solve.

  • spyder2k6

I just got my ps3 2 weeks ago did 1 update then another which was 2.43. I had no problem. I’am thinking when the update did not download fast enof the kids who 98% have ADF shook he ps3 and damged there system then wanted to have a reason to blame the update for there problem. I have tested all my games and the blue-ray on my system and its all good. Go get help kids with your behavior problems and stop putting the blame on ps3 when in fact it you. To point the finger at some one, well I point the finger at you. Grow-up and faces facts ps3 is not the problem its your parents who raised your asses all fucked up.. Nuff said…!!

  • mark

Their is definitly a problem with some of the ps3s. I dont know any kids that own one only adults. the problem should be rectified with the newer models. Sony wouldnt admit to it if their wasnt definitly a problem.

  • JOEmama

spyder2k6 you are kind of an idiot. One reason is for the incoherrent grammar you use. Secondly blaming people that they shook their PS3′s or whatever nonsense you were talking about…thats jsut asinine. Many people have had this problem, including myself. I have taken prestine care of my PS3; always shutting it down when not in use; well ventilated, and cleaned often.

Not exactly sure why you are blaming people and accusing them of having ADF ( ADD?) and treating their $600 machine like dirt

  • jay32

hey i updated my ps3 and now every time i fart lightning comes out my butt.
get a life somtimes things break.

  • JOEmama

jay32 – the diference between things breaking because of wear and tear is acceptable. When things break because of a manufacturers faulty design ( this firmware update crashing PS3 blu-ray drives) then its the manufacturers responsibility to fix it if they want to keep selling their product, maintain relations with their customers, and their business partners ( i.e. game developers and bluray movie distributers).

So instead of lighting your farts all day…..think a little.

  • what_tha_fish

i cannot believe some of the idiotic posts i read in this article. some are saying “maybe it’s xbox 360 fanboys trying to mess with Sony” and some say “quit whining and blaming it on the firmware”. and some say “the firmware update has nothing to do with your blu-ray drive”. come on folks, what do you think “firmware” is? it’s a software update that can affect your hardware (whether for better or for worse).

to tell you the truth, i think SONY doesn’t want to admit to their mistakes of not testing the firmware, so they have these idiots (fanboys) on here saying that it’s not the firmware’s fault that the PS3 is not reading discs anymore. my PS3 doesn’t read discs because i bought it AS-IS on ebay, haha. i will wait a little longer to see if SONY actually releases a firmware fix, and maybe i can try that to see if it will fix that issue. if not, then i’ll just put it back on ebay.

almost like my 2003 altima… it was recalled for the crankshaft sensor being faulty (because it’s made out of plastic, cuz they were too cheap to use metal). and get this, nissan doesn’t cover the replacement of the crankshaft sensor and you would have to pay the dealership $300 to do so. the freakin’ part only costs $30. i just went out and bought the part and got my local mechanic to do it for me. total cost was around $50.

the problem is that we are getting “DUMB” engineers working on electronics, cars, and all other stuff that we use each day. it’s called “laziness”. they don’t want to make stuff better, they just want to hurry up and do their “job” and get “paid”. same way with doctors. they will just send you home and tell you that you have a cold. 3 days later you are lying dead in the hospital bed because you had a virus that wasn’t treated. people just don’t want to actually “WORK” anymore.

just figured i’d put in my 2 cents worth. i’m at work right now, so i’m just killing time.

  • what_tha_fish

speaking of “work”… i’m not doing anything at work either. i’m not being lazy, it’s just FRIDAY. haha. sucks that i can’t afford a PS3 cuz’ i have 3 kids and a wife to take care of and all the money goes to that. i do, however, have an xbox 360 that i put on my best buy card 2 years ago. i’m not a fanboy cuz i love both systems, but there’s just so many damn good games on the xbox 360… bring it on.

The day 2.42 came out my Blu Ray discs would freeze at random points. I checked 10 discs all with the same result. I later updated to 2.43 with no improvement. I preformed every fix 3+ times with no result.

This morning I called customer service. I was told since my warranty is out of date, I would have to pay $150 to get it fixed. I had my call escalated to James (48408) who stated there is no problem with the firmware, I’m just unlucky. After insisting for and hour and a half that my system be fixed for free, the CSR hung up on me.\

Not being one to quit, I called right back. I was told that James was the only senior staff on site, I said I was fine speaking to him again. After being put on hold for 45 min+ I spoke with Mike Folden, James’ boss. He told me that he just stopped in quickly – which of course must be true, plenty of CSR’s stop in to work on a weekend just for fun.

Mike gave me the same line, there is no firmware problem, pay up or hang up. I let Mike know that I am aware that many people are having this same problem, and that two of my relatives have experience the same problem with the system being out of warranty in addition to many others on this forum. I let Mike know that others have had their fee waived. He denied this, stating that they never waive the fee, ever.

Calling on my past CSR experience, I asked him to run a quick check on specific case numbers which show that they have in fact waived this fee for many people with this specific problem. He stated this was not possible.

At this point I told him how to look it up on the system he was using, he said ‘well I could do that, but I am not going to’. I asked him why he would not bother to look up two simple case files to prove me wrong, he got very angry.

He very quickly told me that I would get a call back in 3-5 days, and hung up on me mid sentence.

Anyone else have problems like this?

I refuse to give up, I will not pay a penny for a system that they busted.

  • Mart

Well i bought a PS3 just over a week ago. It was fine for the first few days until i installed the update. Then it started crashing while trying to load games and now wont even recognize when a blue-ray disc is in the console. At least its so new i can just get it replaced, i feel sorry for those who’s warranty has run out.

I was told that the update tells the laser to read at a faster rate than possible, and this is causing some lasers to burn out. I assume there has to be a pre-existing weakness, otherwise everyones would be going wrong.

Just got off the phone with Sony, 149 + tax for servicing.

  • gutwrenchfacebuster

Has anyone tried using the PS3 restore menu? (if you don’t know, it was introduced in version 2.5,you access it by pressing and holding the power button til it beeps twice) There’s options to restore the file system and to rebuild the database.
I’ve just finished restoring the system from a usb back-up after restoring the file system, don’t know yet if it’s fixed anything. Rebuilding the database takes ages so I haven’t tried it.
Once again, to anyone who’s still saying these problems are nothing to do with the firmware upgrades, SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP! YOU KNOW NOTHING!!!!!!

  • LISTEN

I AM GOING TO SAY THIS SO LISTEN TO ME THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT BELIEVE. I BOUGHT MY 80G PS3 CAUSE THE 360 CRASHES. I BOUGHT RESISTANCE 2 AND WAS FORCED TO UPDATE TO 2.42 OR THE GAME WOULDN’T PLAY. ONE WEEK AFTER THE UPDATE MY PS3′S BRAIN IS SCRAMBLED. IT WILL SHUT OFF WHILE TRYING TO START UP. THE PROBLEM IS REAL. CONSOLE WAS FLAWLESS AND PLAYED ALL GAMES WITHOUT HEAT OR PROBLEMS FOR MONTHS. ONE WEEK AFTER UPDATE AND ITS GONE. NO COINCIDENCE.
