Apple iPod Touch with GPS
July 30, 2008 | Filed under Audio & Video Gadgets, Gadgets

Back in February Apple introduced the 32GB iPod Touch to the collection of 8GB and 16GB models. We know there will be another iPod Touch at some point and today we have a few clues.
The new beta iPhone and iPod 2.1 firmware hints at a new iPod Touch. It’s being reported that there are references to an unreleased iPod Touch known as iPod2,1.
The current iPod models are known as “iPod1,1″, and the first generation iPhone was known as “iPhone1,1″. These numbers are not changed when new storage sizes are introduced; it takes a few more features to introduce a new model like this. The latest iPhone 3G is known as “iPhone1,2″.
The shows that the new iPod Touch will carry more features, but what might these be? Its unlikely that Apple would want the new iPod Touch to overshadow the iPhone, so expect additions like GPS.
Would you like GPS features on a new iPod Touch?

Top of my list would be vastly improved battery life. When watching video, surfing or using an app you can literally see the battery levels run down.
GPS would be a nice feature as well alternative ways to connect to the net, such as edge without a phone contract, which could be subscribed to or pay as you go - don’t know if that would be possible.
Improved motion sensing, or shake sensing like on the wiimote. I’d also like vibration added.
A non-scratch screen and a machine that doesn’t need to be housed in a bulky case in order to protect it.
Any updates should be hardware based, as the firmware can already be updated on the existing machines.
I’d like to see a camera added in and an external speaker.
Then I would consider getting upgrading my touch.
Agree, they would be two very worthy additions.
Sloppy…. get a iPhone!!!
No thanks. I’m happy with my service provider and I like my cheap, easy to use Nokia N63 that does everything I need. I’m not too bothered if I break it, or lose it on a night on the sauce where as I’d be gutted if I lost an iPhone. Plus the iTouch is a slimmer, sexier bit of kit that does almost everything the iPhone does without tying me in to an expensive contract for 18 months.
Yeah, but surely if you still want ’sleek’, a camera and speaker, no matter how good tech is these days is gonna bulk it up a bit, and i just wouldnt like that. if they can do it without adding more than 2mils at most, ill grab one.
Oh, and you could just get an iphone and erm… “unlock” it
Yup, GPS is an absolute MUST as far as I am concerned. That, and speakers so you can play games etc. without being teathered to earphones.
Like a lot of people, I’m happy with my cheap, perfectly functional phone, that I couldn’t care less about if I damaged or lost it. I also happen to like the slim nature of the iPod Touch, although would be happy with a mm or so added to the thickness if it meant having these new hardware features.
It would be great if they managed to fit in PocketSurfer functioanlity where you get so many hours free each month, or pay £5 for unlimited surfing. That would allow iPod Touch to take advantage of things like Earthscape. However, I can see that treading too close to the iPhone itself.
I get it all the time - why not just get an iPhone that does all you want now? Answer = I DON’T WANT TO PAY OUT £35 A MONTH FOR 18 MONTHS!!!!
Gente… adorei!!!!!!!!! Sei que vocês não me entendem, mas tinha que deixar isso registrado.
The only way your are going to get a screen that is more scratch resistant is for it to be made of diamond. The only thing that will scratch it now is Silica (glass, sand). So as long as you don’t take sandpaper to it you should be okay. Or, put an invisibleShield on it.
