Nintendo Wii Hard Drive: More space for Virtual Console & WiiWare
July 28, 2008 | Filed under Gaming, Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii may not have the online features that the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 had from the start but it does offer excellent interactivity that the other next-generation games systems do not.
The PS3 had a bigger hard drive than the Xbox 360 at launch, but the Nintendo Wii’s internal space and SD card options are laughable. Although to be fair, hard drive space was never a factor with the Wii.
Now days, Wii gaming is very different and a hard drive is needed. Wii Gamers need more space for Virtual Console and WiiWare. Nintendo know this and has said it’s “working to find a solution”.
Virtual Console has over 200 games in Europe and WiiWare games are getting larger. The 512MB of internal space and supported 2GB SD cards will not do.
There is a sense of urgency to solve the Nintendo Wii storage problem. Are you affected by a lack of hard drive space on the Nintendo Wii and what solution would you like to see?

Why is it so hard to update the Wii software so we can add a standard USB hard drive? PS3 lets you use a standard SATA hard drive, so why can’t Nintendo do the same?
It would be better than those overpriced proprietary hard drives the Xbox 360 has… Ugh.
Great article. There’s no reason a company like Nintendo can’t compete with Playstation or XBox when it comes to hard drive space.
I had to delete a few games to make room for more. I think the most simple update would be the ability to use USB storage devices AND the ability to play games directly from the SD card.
Nintendo is concerned about the ease of piracy if games could be read directly from an SD card. I don’t think they’ll go that route, but as someone who has had to delete VC games for more blocks, I’m more than ready to see what Nintendo will do.
I don’t get it. Nintendo allows us to copy VC games, WiiWare, and Wii Channels to our SD cards. The software can only be used on the system that originally downloaded it. So then why doesn’t Nintendo let us use that same software directly off of our SD cards? I don’t see how this security would be weakened with this feature.
That good to hear from news. Why not put new technology bigger SD flash memory up to between 8 GB and 256 GB for your Nintendo Wii? More powerful than hard drive’s life cycle. Remember this Flash drive is the future for now. Don’t use hard drives anymore. Let going buy flash drive for Nintendo.
Don’t use Seagate!!! Western Digital, Hiachi, and other good product are best than Seagate. People will sue Seagate due lost files, failure, etc. Seagate have very short life cycle about 1 month to 2 years to be dead quickly. People will be warned! On google news said about 1,000 jobs was fired by Seagate company! So watch out!
