Not Just Bug Fixes: iPhone and iPod Touch 2.1 firmware update

Apple iPhone 2.1 Firmware Update
We all know about the bugs in the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch 2.0 software update, which have affected us all in different ways. The main problem we had was the lag we received on the iPhone after updating to firmware 2.0.

Today we hear from GearLive that Apple has seeded iPhone 2.1 beta firmware to developers that were accepted prior to July 11th, 2008. This update will include turn-by-turn GPS thanks to new software tracking your speed and direction your traveling.

Some developers have found the new iPhone SDK disappointing and this is for its lack of App Store support. You cannot submit Apps to the current Apple App Store.

The new beta firmware also shows support for cutting, copying and pasting. This is something we knew was coming at some point and it looks to be in the 2.1 software.

Blogging is a massive platform already, but this new firmware will help this industry grow faster with copy and paste on the iPhone.

What feature do you want to see in firmware update 2.1 the most?

Ive noticed with the v2.0 firmware that when you unlock the device with the music player running it returns to the Home Screen. This is very irritating if youre just unlocking to quickly pause the current song playing.

This wasnt a problem with the v1.1.4 software, and I hope its ironed out with a further software update in the near future.

Hey rozz, im glad to help.
instead of unlocking when wanting to pause a song, just double tap the home button, this will allow you to pause or skip a song. your welcome in advance

1st landscrape mode for typing messages. Sorry but I rather that than cut, copy, paste.

2nd not a software feature but phone. Soft touch back not the hard glossy plastic. More grip, and less cheap looking(sorry apple).

3rd MMS natively not through app support, c’mon.

Give me those three and I will forgive the 2megapixel cam

Well first that the touch can be connected as a removable device

Second, play the lovely DivX format or much better, all formats

    Third, PDF document support

    cheers

High on my list would be search capabilities. For example, I know I have a doctor’s appointment coming up, but don’t know when. I’d love to type in my doctor’s name and have the date of past and future appts come up. My old Treo 650 did this really well. Also, searching through contacts. On Apple’s support website they say you can search on any field–name, address, phone number, etc., but it doesn’t work. I was at the Apple store today, and they agreed–it doesn’t work. You can only search for items that are in the top line. All they could say was that maybe it was posted on their site in anticipation of an update. (I hope!)

    I now have 2.0.1…

Big things that I still see missing are:

Ability to email/sms a contact, or your contact details to someone else, eg a vcard.
Ability to email/sms a google map point/address to someone. eg. “I’ll meet you here”
Ability to email/sms an iCal appointment to another iphone/computer user.

I dont see why they couldn’t add the email function with whats already there, and the sms would just have to send some text data through, with some syntax that would be picked up by iphones, and automatically add to ical/address book/gmaps.

Can anyone see any reason why this would be a problem?
