Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Recently on the MTV’s multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.
What’s interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.
One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.
Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
The real way to raise the bar with the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 is through real exclusives. Games cost a lot to make and less exclusives may be around in the future, but for now the ones that become real exclusives help raise the bar for a games console.
In Dille’s own words “look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform, when the NPD numbers come out… I think you’ll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360”.
We have seen the results from June’s NPD numbers and how MGS4 helped take the PS3 to another level, real exclusives on the 360 will also do the same for that system.
With games being expensive to make, the developers want that investment in a global marketplace and Dille believes the PlayStation format is the best place for exclusives.
It’s true that the PlayStation 3 has passed the Xbox 360 in Europe and dominates in Japan, the Xbox 360 is winning in the U.S. but the game developer will want to think Global not just United States.
Depending what happens in the U.S. will shape what games become exclusive and also how much money Microsoft wants to spend from that big bank balance.
We may end up seeing less exclusive video games, but when we do see them they will help raise that system to new heights.

I was not trying to be a fanboy on this site, but I think you brought it out of me. It is people like you that piss me off. Sorry to burst your bubble but the inevitable will come to pass. The PS3 will take over the 360 sales, yes it will come in the future but it will happen. Think about it this way. the 360 had a 8-10 million head start on the PS3 when it first came out. That lead has diminished to about 5 mil give or take as the PS3 comes to its 2nd year of its console life span. The sad thing is that you mentioned it in your post. The PS3 will outsell the 360 this generation. The PS3 has too many blockbusters comin out Fall 2008 - Spring 2009 for a major dent not to happen. And guess what, those games are first party games that will never see the light of day on the 360. And please tell me what games from the 360 will top those 8-10 (and maybe more, this is just a guestimate) games coming out for the PS3 during that time span.
I’m not holding my breath for any of them though. And the big question is if these games actually live up to the huge hype machine Sony has built. Most of Sony’s 1st party titles have been letdowns so far, what exactly has changed that will make their new games be so amazing? Are you really that excited about Killzone 2, a sequel to a miserable excuse for a game? What was it about the first game that has people excited about the new one? Nothing. It’s all about Sony and their great hype machine.
Resistance was a fun game, yes, but nothing special. I have played it. I also played mgs4, or rather, I watched mgs4 and played what little I could between it’s long movie scenes. The reason why that game is so huge is because Kojima is insane. I like great stories, but the mgs series went way off the deep end long ago. But yet this was the game everybody was looking for, I expected something amazing, and was letdown. It’s the story of a mad genius out of control, Konami should have put a leash on their game designer.
I’m not saying that the ps3 lacks great games, but it has taken over 2 years to build even a small library of playable games. During this time, the 360 has trucked right along. The ps3 still has to claim “it is for the future,” while the 360 has been enjoyed in my living room for 3 years. No matter what you say, you can’t change those last 3 years. The future may be different, but it is still a ways off. This holiday will be very interesting.

Xbox brand is destine to come to a fall and fade out we all know that Microsoft is getting scare worry, every day that Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 gets one of their must have exclusives. PLAYSTATION 3 is catching Xbox 360 sales at at new faster rate now outselling the poor dying Xbox month by Month. Sony creates and buy games also publishers them and help developers with the cost. Microsoft just tries to acquire FPS rights they don’t bother trying to make a game no talent. Xbox 360 is alive because Microsoft is never going to face defeat they rather lose money like they do with every single product they try to create and also Xbox Live is paying obviously not for the server since they are horrible but for the huge loses they having like 6 billions. They still haven’t fix the Red Light of Death issue even Elite models have massive problems and the DVD disc drive still way too noisy. The movies and shows and even games Microsoft sells on Xbox Live those things are suppose to be profitable for Microsoft Xbox 360 right. But Microsoft is using that money to try and tell their consumers they are getting profit by selling the consoles which is a huge lie. Xbox 360 is form of and kept going all this time by words like lies,denial,confusion, and stolen money from consumers. Plus most American are Xbox 360 FANBOYS since is an American gaming console. Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 was design by visionary people that know and loves high tech technology. When you look at the system itself it looks beautiful stylish sexy color not plastic white or a black PS3 color rip off aka Xbox 360 ELITE. If you are a real gamer that is not a fanboy or you a fanboy but still love games you need a PLAYSTATION 3. PS1 and PS2 230 millions consoles sold combine sells with thousands of games from a wide variety of game developer and publishers and Sony it self.. Home beta will be launch officially this fall on PLAYSTATION 3 it will include a video service for movies and shows not 720p like Xbox 360 but in full 1080p resolution and Home will also have Accomplishment and Trophies for games so when you playing a game you know you getting something in return for your skills not just points which are worthless aka Gamerscore. PLAYSTATION 3 will make Xbox 360 obsolete soon if they don’t do it themselves. I like both consoles for what they truly are not for what others try to tell me it is…

Theres actually alot of games coming out for the 360 Saigon, especially more rpgs, and in the US ffxiii will have the same release date. M$ has been trying to get alot more variety of games on board. I actually went to get a ps3 for mgs4 and ended up getting a 360 isntead, because of the games coming out for it. Unfortunatly its an easy system to develope for so its always going to have more exclusives even if they arent good ones. A game like earth defense force 2017 wont make it onto ps3 just because its a low budget game and making it for ps3 would just cost to much. Not that it was a great game but it was cheap and fun.
The fact is sony’s cell processor is over hyped and not much more powerful then the 360’s if at all. Theoreticly the cell should be capable 133 gflops but it drops to 114. 360 is 115 and much much easier to develope for. Epic even stated they couldnt get Gears to run on the ps3.

either way both have good games and if not for my beloved pc, i had to make a choice of which console i wanted, but i wish i could afford them both. Ill miss mgs4 or play it at a friends house.
Ivan you are funny, say you not a fanboy, and list a bunch of games that are not even released yet, they only one on your list is MGS4 and Metal Gear Online, all the rest are in the future, I think I will wait until they actually come out, and then decide if the ps3 is worth it. It is nice you are able to live in the future, but the rest of us live in the current.
When Japan and China completely own the U.S. I will be sure to thank all the sony fanboys. Who cares about bluray when you can stream unlimited hidef movies via netflix for 8.99 a month directly to your 360. The future is here streaming content not a disc technology that started in early eighties. Think about it ? Discs are on there way out, people would rather use an mp3 player not a discman. The launch 360s did have a high failure rate but M$ extended the warranty, the new hardware rivision has the same failure rate as the ps3. Looks dont matter and shouldnt be grouped with reliablity.

I dont need a webbrowser, i have a pc for that, xbox has updates and they dont nuke the systems like 2.4 did. Foldin@home is almost cool but not anything that makes the system better…

360 this christmass has a huge variety of games coming out, Actually more so then the ps3… which is why i ended up with a 360 over a ps3. We also have more low budget titles not the best games around but can be entertaining. PS3 lost these developers with the over hyped cell processor.

PS1 games is a cool feature, but the ps3 psp remote i could care less about. If i leave my house, its not to play with a psp.

There is absolutly no need for a game console to be this expensive, yes with a 360 if you buy the core for 270 then all of the accesories after its very very expensive but with a pro bundle for 350 with a 60gb hdd is plenty. 299 for the 20gb model right now which is still plenty. Sony brand forces you to buy everything which is one of the reasons i went with a 360, they have more reasonable prices for a gaming system. Now if i needed a dvd player/pc/gaming system the ps3 is looking a little more reasonable.
The rest of ivan_psp’s post is obvious fanboy rant for sony’s console. Now i wish i had a ps3 but the price tag just isnt worth it for me, most of the features are just more then what i need and as a game system its not better hardware wise as the 360. The trophies and home that ps3 is getting, well 360 has had achievements from launch and every game has them. The live service is a great service and has been since launch and getting some cool feartures in the future, like the avatars, or mii60s as some would call it. I had a launch 360 that died and i bought another with the hardware revision, and these were surprisingly quiet. And you say M$ has lost a lot of money, what about sony announcing they were sunk 3.3 billion from the ps3.
Im not a 360 fanboy, but guilty pc fanboy. but M$ has made alot of better choices. And right now ps3 just doesnt look like a buy. Since i already have a pc, i have plenty of shooters at my disposal. But i thought the games coming out for 360 had more variety, specially with rpgs. 360 has a stronger network since M$ is all about quality controll on it, which does make copying saves and where you can move them too much more strict, but that makes the achievements that much better since there’s almost no way to cheat. I think Sony would be doing much much better if they came out with a cheaper system that didnt cost so much and force people to get all that xtra that bloats the cost. The core 360 might not come with much but it lets you play the games and if thats all your looking for, then the ps3 is obviously a bad choice.

I’ve got the 360 and ps3…. well it’s my 3rd xbox360 and it will be my last! the ps3 is far better…. I notice your all going on about the ram in both systems! Well the ps3 uses 256mbXDR ram clocking at 3.2 ghz, and the ps3 dont get the red ring ov death.
There has been a lot of talk about the Playstation 3’s Random Access Memory (RAM) vs Xbox 360’s RAM, saying that the 360 has more RAM to work with etc. Here’s an article to explain the situation of its RAM.
Just so you know that the PS3 has 512MB of RAM (256 for video and 256 for system). The Cell chip has 256MB of completely sharable RAM, the GPU has 256MB of dedicated RAM. Now the key here is what type of RAM it is.
The Playstation 3 has 256mb of GDDR3 at 700mhz and 256Mb of XDR at 3.2ghz. So what exactly is XDR ram? Here are some of the highlights:
XDR makes PS3 super effiecient
XDR aids in faster cache mapping, both direct and indirect
XDR ram works by a pointer to pointer technology and needs very small buswidth for execution
XDR is not just faster than GDDR3 but it is much more efficient
XDR RAM works by breaking down data into several packets which prevents data loss and exceptions

The PS3 has two times as much cache at 2x the speed, making it way faster for direct/indirect mapping. Not only that but it has 512k of L1 cache + 1.7m of L2 cache for the 7 spes. The PS3’s GPU, RSX was made to work with the Cell processor, it is not some GPU they took and slotted in. It is made to be compatible with the Cell.
More RAM does not mean a faster system it means more data can be stored in a fast access area. Games don’t always need 512mb of RAM.
The RSX can freely use as much of the 512MB total RAM that the PS3 has because the Cell doesn’t need much RAM because its fast enough. And the fact that the PS3 has XDR means that it has faster access to data files.
A lot of people are saying that the RSX only has 256mb of RAM, whereas the 360’s GPU has 512MB of RAM. To make it sound a bit simpler, here’s the real deal. The PS3 has it’s RAM in two separate parts, 256MB for the RSX and 256MB that can be used be either the Cell or RSX.
XDR ram is 12x faster than the typical PC ram.

Ps3 CPU ram beats xbox360’s CPU ram. The better ram, the faster, and better performance. Ps3 will be faster, and have better performance than the 360.

This slows down 360’s CPU. Like intergrated G-cards do with Computers. Intergrated G-cards share the computers ram, i know i have one. This slows down my computer alote.
Graphics Cards will be dead soon as multicore CPU’s will be able to number crunch alot better than any GPU…. One more to sony! the CELL BE 9 cores etc etc. Dont get me wrong I love my 360 but the ps3 wins hands down

Ps3 people always seem to readily trash the 360, yet most have never played on one.I used to be a playstation man too, but when ps3 was delayed i got a 360.I have not looked back wthout it i would have missed halo 3,bioshock,M.E,etc…Only regret msg4 & blu ray.
