Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Recently on the MTV’s multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.
What’s interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.
One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.
Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
The real way to raise the bar with the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 is through real exclusives. Games cost a lot to make and less exclusives may be around in the future, but for now the ones that become real exclusives help raise the bar for a games console.
In Dille’s own words “look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform, when the NPD numbers come out… I think you’ll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360”.
We have seen the results from June’s NPD numbers and how MGS4 helped take the PS3 to another level, real exclusives on the 360 will also do the same for that system.
With games being expensive to make, the developers want that investment in a global marketplace and Dille believes the PlayStation format is the best place for exclusives.
It’s true that the PlayStation 3 has passed the Xbox 360 in Europe and dominates in Japan, the Xbox 360 is winning in the U.S. but the game developer will want to think Global not just United States.
Depending what happens in the U.S. will shape what games become exclusive and also how much money Microsoft wants to spend from that big bank balance.
We may end up seeing less exclusive video games, but when we do see them they will help raise that system to new heights.

SOCOM is the greatest and most addicted online game ever made a truly must have. Final Fantasy XIII still is a PS3 exclusive in Japan and it will be released a year after the dumbed version for Xbox 360 according to Square-Enix PS3 version will be superior due to Blu-ray Disc technology . Xbox is dying and is dead in Japan and in Europe is getting an ass kick by Sony’s PS3. PS3 is perfect in every way Xbox fanboy love PS3 exclusives they drool always.
I stopped reading after the first to paragraphs. You’re writing is atrocious! Where in the world is your sources? You could at least post another website for quotes. You need a source for your statement about MS paying of Square and you need a source for your (false) information about GTAIV. It was never a MS exclusive in and of itself, but the DLC is MS exclusive.
You’ve gotta do better than this.
I love the PS3 fanboys! You guys are pretty hilarious. Here is a timeline of fanboy comments:
(PS2 vs Xbox) It is not the hardware that matters it is the software line-up.
(PS2 vs Xbox) We don’t like FPS titles, it is all about the RPG’s.
(PSP vs DS) It is not about the software, the PSP has much better hardware.
(PS3 vs 360) It is not about the software line-up or the 360 ports being better, it is about the potential power of the console Sony keeps promising us year after year.
(PS3 vs 360) It is not about the RPGS, seeing as MS is now pounding Sony in that department as well, it is about MGS4.
(PS3 vs 360) It is not about the PS3’s basic last gen online service, it is the fact that it is free!
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Hot Shots, Ratchet, and Heavenly Sword but the arguments just keep going in circles. YOU ARE A MINDLESS CONSUMER..cough…IDIOT…cough…FANBOY! All fanboys are laughable, but I find that Sony fanboys just leave me shaking my head. Good luck with your $600 Blu Ray player and $35 BR movies while playing some low quality games
If the PS3 software line-up is so great, someone please explain the consoles horrible attachment rates?
“MGS4 cant be done on the 360 with just one disk. ”
Yes it can.
a) To start with, MP3 compress the audio tracks. For some insane reason, Hideo doesnt like compressing audio. (sorry, but MP3 is good enough for the human ear).
b) -much harder- You can generate game textures fractualy, hugely saving space. While this cant be done with all textures, a good 80% could be done.
This, however, means either longer loading or install times.
Just to proove what can be done in a little space here;
http://www.theproduct.de/
Not graphicaly impressive as such, but look at the frecking file size.
Procedral textures can insanely reduce file sizes. If developers really really needed more space, they could use them.
But everything is a trade off.
And in the end, if your porting a game, just going for an extra disk is probably easier.
But lets cut this “cut be done” or “impossible” or “PROVES ITS BETTER” crap.
Thats exactly like saying;
MGS takes 8 minutes to install at the start, and it has long loading times.
I can play Mario Galaxy within 20 seconds or turning my Wii on, with no loading more then a few seconds in game.
That PROVES the Wii is better then the PS3.
See how crazy it is to make those arguments?
Each system has its strengths and weakpoints.
So many incorrect facts I havent time to go into, here’s one “Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.” GTA3 was developed on the PS2 - Microsoft just bought some extra content for GTA4.
Time to go back to school as well, your grammar sucks…
I love the people on these “comments” that get offened and start disecting the way you type.
This is not a thesis, its a PS3 comment page and FF still sucks.
@ Dave
Actually that is inncorect. but you tried. I am sure you should know by now that most issue with multiplat games on the PS3 is the fact that they were design for the 360 first and port to the PS3 at a later time. This also holds true for GTA4. The only difference was that the PS3 programmers were a little more experienced than most devs that port from the 360 to the PS3 first. Now you should also know that most devs are now programing for the PS3 first and then they port the game to the 360. An example is Burnout Paradise, another is NCAA Football 2009, and There are many more.
Lets take this exmple for instance. When EA developed NCAA 2008 they created the game on the 360 first and ported the game to the PS3, it rusulted in the 360 having 720P at 60fps and the PS3 version 640P at 30FPS. Now when EA decided to make th game on the PS3 first it resulted in both games running at 720P at 60 FPS.
I know you might be wondering why this occured, so i will try to explain. Better yet take this as an example. Would you rather program a chunk of code to one system and later when you port the code to another system that does not respond well to chunk coding (meaning you will have to break the code up for the system to use it correctly, which also takes a long time) or would you rather program in threads and port to a system that can read the threads. I think I would stick to the latter, as most 3rd party devs are doing.
Also the PS3 is the only system out on the market that can do true 1080P. From what I stated above it will happen for both systems, or SE will just keep a safe resolution for both system of 30 FPS at 720P.
“”All I know is that MGS4 is 1080P at 60fps and looks extremely nice! In the Middle of MGS4 there is a clip that jokes about 360s limitations where it tells users to put in another disk then its says wait this is a PS3 you dont have to, etc! MGS4 cant be done on the 360 with just one disk. This alone, THERE IS NO BETTER LOOKING GAME and imo, no better game TO DATE THAT MGS4 hands down! With this being true and the fact that it is not capable for MGS4 to be done on 360, this PROVES that the PS3 is the most capable system! CASE CLOSED because no matter what is said, all of the preceding is the truth!!!! ” ………….. the greatly looking shots on mgs4 are cut sceens, you really think it is hard to make a nice looking cut sceen. they were little mini blu-ray movies, not game play. You could practically stream the hd MGS4 cutstreams straight to the 360 and never even need to include them and a disk. I could play an HD-DVD through the 360 addon, at 1080P, that wouldn’t mean anything in regards to game play, same as the MGS4 mini-blu ray movies

People always are saying that the ps3 will surpass the 360 in the “future,” and that it is inevitable. But I want to know when this “future” going to happen?? How long do I need to wait? It’s all good, while ps3 owners held their breath for mgs4, I was playing my 360. And while ps3 owners hold their breath again for more, I’m still playing my 360, and will continue to do so. Whenever that “future” comes, I will have been playing my 360 for several years while ps3 owners have spent most of their time waiting for that great game to come along.
The ps3 is a fine machine, but so is the 360. Look back to the last generation, did the old xbox surpass the ps2 in sales with all it’s power and features? No it did not. The ps3 has had a good run this summer, out selling the 360 at times, especially when mgs4 came out. But the ps3 needs to go from 5 million to 10 million to pass the 360 in sales. The only way that is going to happen is if the 360 simply stops selling, but, friends, the 360 is not going anywhere. It may be dead in Japan, but Euope is a dogfight and the US is a dogfight now, but the system still has a 5 million unit lead.
I might buy a ps3…sometime in the “future.”
