Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Recently on the MTV’s multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.
What’s interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.
One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.
Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
The real way to raise the bar with the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 is through real exclusives. Games cost a lot to make and less exclusives may be around in the future, but for now the ones that become real exclusives help raise the bar for a games console.
In Dille’s own words “look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform, when the NPD numbers come out… I think you’ll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360”.
We have seen the results from June’s NPD numbers and how MGS4 helped take the PS3 to another level, real exclusives on the 360 will also do the same for that system.
With games being expensive to make, the developers want that investment in a global marketplace and Dille believes the PlayStation format is the best place for exclusives.
It’s true that the PlayStation 3 has passed the Xbox 360 in Europe and dominates in Japan, the Xbox 360 is winning in the U.S. but the game developer will want to think Global not just United States.
Depending what happens in the U.S. will shape what games become exclusive and also how much money Microsoft wants to spend from that big bank balance.
We may end up seeing less exclusive video games, but when we do see them they will help raise that system to new heights.

I just feel like throwing somthing out here.
You dont have to be a sony leg humper to relalize blu-ray is “Eventually” going to outrun the more conventional standard DVD formats. (The Format war already proved that.) So Microsoft can soak in the glory of beating sales right now but what will they do when game developers finally UTILIZE the full advantages of Blu-Ray. It will almost be impossible to make multiplatform games the same. I think SONY made a wise choice to spend the extra buck to start blu-ray consoles now and stay in it for the long run. It will soon pay off.
I hate to break it to you Darkie but SOCOM is a Sony owned franchise.
PS. The FF series has been going downhill since FFVI on the SNES. Almost the entire original dev. team has moved on and plenty of the old fans (myself included) have moved on to better RPG’s as well.
MS didn’t pay for Final Fantasy, all they had to do was show Square how much more money they can make if they made it cross platform.
Exactly, they saw the sales numbers for GTA4 and said we want a peice of that, I am sure they went to sony and asked for Sony to pay for the exclusive, but how could sony possibly offer enough to make up for the lossing half their sales, GTA4 actually sold better on the 360, no reason to think FF won’t also. even if it sales better on the ps3, it will still sell well on the 360. it was sony that had to open its wallet to keep it an exclusive, it was microsoft.
Ok…Ok…Ok… I read enough.
Please understand this. When SE was interviewed about the jump they made to the 360 (no pun intended) the SE analyst stated that they made the decision based off of the HW install base for each Console (PS3 and 360). They wanted to take advantage of the 360 install base. They also mentioned that it is the same reason why the game will not release in Japan for the 360.
What they were truly saying was that the PS3 did not have enough install base just for the game to release on just the PS3. In term this does makes sense. if you are a gamer this does make sense. If you are a fanboy this does not make sense. I have heard many fanboy arguments and most are saying that if SE would have looked at the trend of each console, they would have realized who and which system has the advantage especially since this game will not release any time soon. There will be a surprise to some in 2009. I not going to say which console it is because it is very obviuos.
Another thing that was mentioned in the interview was about the amount of game disk that would be needed for the 360. The SE rep did not answer the question. The Rep laughed at the question. I will let you know this right now, expect this game to be multi disc for the 360. This game will be the size of MGS4 or larger. The 360 will be able to handle the game because of the new download initiative that MS has developed the only issue the system might have is playing the game in HD. Because this game will be on the 360 it will not be 1080P it will be 720P at 30 FPS.
One Last thing, this game will not come out until Sum 2009 in Japan, and between Winter 2009 Spring 2010 in US/PAL.
In my post above I meant to add in the second paragraph that because of the poor analytical comment from SE, it is the reason why many people state MS opened up their wallet. Another theory is that because SOny is on the SE governance board (they own stock in the company), they were notified of the funds. One reason why all of Sony’s upper management have stated the payoff claim.
Alex - Blue Ray is Sony’s crutch. If it wasn’t for Blu Ray then PS3 wouldn’t work. Games need tons of extra coding, textures and lighting programmed because of the Cell’s game processing limitations. When PS3 uses all 50 gigs on a disc, 360 could do it in less than half the amount of space or more. 360 is made balls out for game processing, PS3 isn’t.
The Cell and Bu Ray have too many people fooled. Yes blu ray is great for movies on PS3 but thats what they want you to know, they don’t want you to know the limitations of PS3.
tgrass21 = x-box fagboy
“game developers finally UTILIZE the full advantages of Blu-Ray”
…then at most, a 360 port will need a extra disk or two.
Seriously, its just storage space, most hugely wasted.
Secondly, the bluray drive is slower, thus longer load times on the ps3.
Not that its bad, just dont believe the hype. More space does not magicaly make anything more possible.
Development time and budgets limit games now, NOT space.
“The 360 will be able to handle the game because of the new download initiative that MS has developed the only issue the system might have is playing the game in HD. Because this game will be on the 360 it will not be 1080P it will be 720P at 30 FPS. ” …………… don’t you mean this the other way around, the p3 version will be lower resolution and at a slower frame rate, Same as GTA4, and many other games, the 360 can handle the graphics better. in fact what is more likely is it will be on the 360 at 720P 60 frames and it will be on the PS3 at 640P at 30 frames.
All I know is that MGS4 is 1080P at 60fps and looks extremely nice! In the Middle of MGS4 there is a clip that jokes about 360s limitations where it tells users to put in another disk then its says wait this is a PS3 you dont have to, etc! MGS4 cant be done on the 360 with just one disk. This alone, THERE IS NO BETTER LOOKING GAME and imo, no better game TO DATE THAT MGS4 hands down! With this being true and the fact that it is not capable for MGS4 to be done on 360, this PROVES that the PS3 is the most capable system! CASE CLOSED because no matter what is said, all of the preceding is the truth!!!!
