Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Recently on the MTV’s multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.
What’s interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.
One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.
Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
The real way to raise the bar with the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 is through real exclusives. Games cost a lot to make and less exclusives may be around in the future, but for now the ones that become real exclusives help raise the bar for a games console.
In Dille’s own words “look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform, when the NPD numbers come out… I think you’ll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360”.
We have seen the results from June’s NPD numbers and how MGS4 helped take the PS3 to another level, real exclusives on the 360 will also do the same for that system.
With games being expensive to make, the developers want that investment in a global marketplace and Dille believes the PlayStation format is the best place for exclusives.
It’s true that the PlayStation 3 has passed the Xbox 360 in Europe and dominates in Japan, the Xbox 360 is winning in the U.S. but the game developer will want to think Global not just United States.
Depending what happens in the U.S. will shape what games become exclusive and also how much money Microsoft wants to spend from that big bank balance.
We may end up seeing less exclusive video games, but when we do see them they will help raise that system to new heights.

Both FFXIII and SOCOM suck, I don’t want to know or don’t know why people like. I like the games they make from movies, its like going to theater for 6x more and in control of the action! My favorite has to be BeBe’s Kids. It really pushed the envelope for the SNES.
FFXIII has had 3+ years of PS3 development, that and Blu-ray ensures that it will be the far superior version anyway.
All the FFXIII will show, is that 360 is the inferior console…
I know one thing….MS is losing ground and they know it!!! That is the reason why they are trying every trick in the book to try and keep up….they know full well it is lost battle. Let them spend their money, which they got plenty off, attemtping to buy out 3rd party developers. To me it seems somewhat backhanded of them…Final Fantasy XIII…I am not worrying cuz, it’s gonna come out on the PS3 first, and then only will it be ported om somewhat 6 discs or so on the x360. Also no FFXIII in Japan….and knowing how crazy they go about FF over there, Sony sure will be surpassing MS this year if not early 2009! Hehehe
Right, and when Socom ends up on 360, a bunch of sony leg humpers will come out of the wood work and say it suddenly sucks too, nice try pal, but FF does not suck and no one ever said it did until now.
Funny ! MGS4 sold a few extra hundred thousand PS3’s. Halo 3 sold almost 2 million 360’s after the games release. MGS4 is awesome but it’s not a Halo or a Gears of War or a God of War or a Final Fantasy.
GTA 4 on the 360 simply kept Sony from selling more PS3’s if it was an exclusive. The 50 million bucks is nothing compared charge Sony would have made had it kept GTA exlusive. Smart move MS !
Funny MGS4 sells 2 mil in a week and boosts PS3 sales halo 3 sells 2 mil in 2 weeks and 360 sales dont budge
and halo’s for fanboys anyways, the same 8 mil bought halo 3 as halo 2 and spent twice as much for the same game with forge
Scott, to make a game for multiple platforms is immensely harder than making it for just one, its like windows, mac, and Linux, theya re all different and you cant run a windows only program on a mac because they operate in different ways, same with consoles, in order to make a game (in this case FFXIII) available to the 360, they have to remake the entire game again for it to work so it instantly doubles the work load on the devs

DANIEL, I don’t know if that was a quote or your own words. But since you didn’t put it in quotes, I would have to assume that it was your own words. Now that that has been established, if you want anyone to take your writing seriously and not consider you to be just another fanboy with a blog, you can’t make presumptuous statements like that. If you know for sure that MS “Opened their wallets wide.” the please by all means present the proof.
As for Peter Dille, he’s the biggest PS3 fanboy of the all as he should be, for godsakes it’s his job. So I can understand where he is coming from. Although, I do believe that the only people that have anything to gain from exclusives is the console manufacturer. Taking MSG4 for instance, it would have sold twice the units had it been multiplat. I know, I know, “It’s not possible to do MSG4 on the 360.” Yeah right, keep believing that.
Anyway, I guess my point is, I think from a developers standpoint, the only way they can benefit from a game being an exclusive is for the console manufacturer to open their wallets “WIDE” , and if anyone opened their wallets wide, all indicators point to Sony doing so to keep MSG4 as an exclusive. Perhaps they didn’t want to give square enix as good a deal, and SE decided to go where the money is and that’s multiplat.
Bravo no disrespect but we have too many shooters on both consoles right now. Personally I like rpgs specifically JRPGS but PS3 was slow with them so I did got shooter for a while. Resistance and then CoD4. CoD4 is probably the best shooter out right now and will hold it for a while. only game I’m looking forward to right now is Disgaea but thats jut me lol
MS didn’t pay for Final Fantasy, all they had to do was show Square how much more money they can make if they made it cross platform.
Wow reading some of these comments makes me feel like I am in kindergarden again and we are fighting to know who is better, Batman or Spiderman? I think it’s Batman…I mean really, he fights crime without special powers and a mountain of cash!! now that is heroic!
I was wrighting that for absolutly no good reason when I realized Batman and M$ are pretty much alike, right? I mean they are pricks who can buyout anything and anyone they want…I am soooo amazing
Anyway…back to flamming the fanboys…I read a comment saying that doing a multi platform game is double the time cause it’s like doing a software for a mac and windows…it’s totally different. ARE YOU TOTALLY INSANE?!?! You seriously believe that they would completely remake the game for the 360 in less than a year?!? DUDE the 360 and PS3 are exactly the same (THEY ARE COMPUTERS WITH LESS OPTIONS FOR GOD SAKE) except one is a bit more powerfull and support blu-ray (which I would like to say is a storage device…nothing more)…what you are saying now is that every computer game would have to be completly redone and you would have to buy a different version of the game if you owned an Intel or a AMD computer?!? give me a break my little ray of sunshine…
One more thing (before this gets too long…oups too late) For you crying fanboys who try to make yourself feel better by telling everyone that FFVIII will be on 700 DVDs for the 360…ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR F’N MIND?!?! I mean seriously, you really think FFVIII will be 36 Gigs? ( that is about 4 DVD 9s for you slow pokes) SE would not port the game to the 360 if they knew it couldn’t handle it.
and to end this poorly written post (English is soooo not my first language) SE is one of the only compagnies you can say makes games for the gamers and not for the money (of course they do it for the money but the quality is always superior) so this game is going to be kick ass if you play on the PS3 or the 360…I hope some of you stop crying long enough to realize that.
