Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Recently on the MTV’s multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.
What’s interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.
One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.
Microsoft paid well for Grand Theft Auto and now it’s not an exclusive on their platform, it’s now a cross-platform game. GTA4 sold well on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
The real way to raise the bar with the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 is through real exclusives. Games cost a lot to make and less exclusives may be around in the future, but for now the ones that become real exclusives help raise the bar for a games console.
In Dille’s own words “look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform, when the NPD numbers come out… I think you’ll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360”.
We have seen the results from June’s NPD numbers and how MGS4 helped take the PS3 to another level, real exclusives on the 360 will also do the same for that system.
With games being expensive to make, the developers want that investment in a global marketplace and Dille believes the PlayStation format is the best place for exclusives.
It’s true that the PlayStation 3 has passed the Xbox 360 in Europe and dominates in Japan, the Xbox 360 is winning in the U.S. but the game developer will want to think Global not just United States.
Depending what happens in the U.S. will shape what games become exclusive and also how much money Microsoft wants to spend from that big bank balance.
We may end up seeing less exclusive video games, but when we do see them they will help raise that system to new heights.

“raise a system to new heights” - I fail to see the importance of this notion to consumers and game makers. FF13 - I was planning to get a ps3 just for this game. Exclusivity is only beneficial to the console maker. Both consoles are great. Playing a game on either console should vary little, at least the gap is closing. The goal for game companies is too sell games. The more games they sell, the more money they make.
The point to keep games exclusive to keep prodcution costs low is absurd. Whats it cost to produce a game for both consoles rather than one? Nothing, compared to the revenue generated. Now, I won’t have to buy a ps3. I did not really want to. But I do want to play FF13 and now I can without exclusivity.
Anyone who thinks they can do without Son’ys first party offerings will be sad, when they realise they have to fork out $400 or £200 for it.
It’s just inavoidable.
LittleBigPlanet is the start.
In principle, exclusive games can be better to play, because the developer can devote full resources to getting the most from the system. Both in terms of controll, graphics as well as console-specific features.
Not to mention bug-fixs
While the optimised difference between Xbox360 and PS3 is probably not so noticable (visual), theres a huge difference between a game dedicated to the Wii, and one thats a multiplatform port (say, PS2/Wii).
Of course though, development costs swamp all these concerns.
The shear cost of making games at the graphical standard the public means developers simple have no choice but release stuff of everything possible….and some things which seem impossible.
Look at Re4 appearing on the PS2, or Dead Rising on the Wii.
Is English your native language or not? What a poorly written article…
i completely agree, exclusivity means that there will be more competition and more competition is always better for the consumer.
i pitty much shore its not that much ps3 pass 360 in sale in europe so not much of a big deal as long they keep on selling they will still be in the lead……
pritty much shore the 360 is not much behind ps3 in europe in sale as long the 360 tell they be still in the lead…..
Final Fantasy games suck, I don’t know and don’t want to know why people like. Socom is propably trhe best game I ever played. A game i can play for years. Can’t wait till 10/14!
@ Bravo hmmmm uhhh I almost don’t even know how to attack such a closed minded statement.
I don’t find Socom very good that doesn’t mean that I would go and insult you and all the other fans for liking it. Keep stupid closed minded coments to your self. FF is a great game with an awsomn fan base including a fantastic development team that put a lot of work into creating a very divers unique story line together to entertain.
Regardless of weather you like it or not you have to respect the work detication and the loyal fan base.
Is English your second language? Because there’s more grammatical errors in this blog than I could count.
