Why do gamers dump on systems? Xbox 360, Sony PS3 & Nintendo Wii

Gamers dump on systems

We see it all the time, whenever some news is reported on Product Reviews, N4G, Digg, Game Trailers and other sites; gamers have to run each games console down.

Why do some gamers have to dump on systems? The Xbox 360 has its advantages over the Sony PS3 and also the other way round; the Nintendo Wii makes up in gameplay what it lacks in graphics.

We can understand why some people will hate a certain system, I personally had RROD on my Xbox 360 and although that was a downer, you cannot knock how good Microsoft’s software, in game chat and other cool features are.

Why do you think we see gamers compelled to run down another games system that they may have not even owned?

Just looking at a post yesterday about a guy called Chris who CLAIMED to have worked on the first Xbox 360 prototype and has now switched to the Sony PS3, while this is a rumor about why RROD may have happened, the comments were taken over by console bashing.

It’s getting much more common today for this type of console bashing to happen between gamers, lets try and keep things more clean from now on. Have you had enough of people just running down consoles for the fun of it?

It all starts when someone reads a comment that they don’t like. Even if the comment is true and even backed up with facts it seems to hit a sour note and then the flame wars begin.

  • Ben

I absolutely hate the flaming and running down that happens whenever there is ANY mention of almost anything. Just look at kotaku – after a story is published there the fanboys and the naysayers (they arent the same group – some people will just dump down on anything they don’t ‘get’).

  • Johnny Buku

What a waste of fanboy energy. None of these crappy new consoles compare to the Atari 2600 anyway. Focus people!

  • Ruben

okay I have only ever had platstation 1,2,3. Never an xbox or the 360 most of my cousins however do I’ve been going over there since halo 3 came out and play big LAN games and I was always impressed with what the 360 had to offer except for last week when 1 of the 360 got the RROD that sucked but whatever my ps3 has overheated it happens. But then when my family comes over and plays my ps3 they are takin back of the beauty of the all black system sitting there looking all badass & jus saying black is more badass then white ex. (The Dark Knight) but that’s jus color. But along with that they can’t get enough of how cool of a system the ps3 is they are impressed with some of the ps3′s advantages over the 360 as I am impressed with the advantages the 360 has over the ps3. The 1 thing that stands out to them that they love about the ps3 is when I put in 300 on blu ray on my 50 inch 1080p plasma they are blown away. The ps3 running on full HD on movies or games can’t be beat in my opinion but the elite makes up for it with its HD and high quality games. If it was up to me I would like to have a 360 jus not next to my all black entertainment system. I honestly believe I would play the ps3 a lil more right now because of mgs4 but that will change from time to time depending on what’s hott right now. So 360 I respect u and the great things u offer and u should respect the ps3 for what it offers gamers as well.

    Video games are stupid.

Because in today’s world the term different strokes for different folks doesn’t apply. I think it’s the best therefore it is the best for everyone. Wouldn’t it be boring if everyone liked the same things, did the same things, looked the same way, oh wait it is starting to look like that, seen anybody with tatoo’s lately.

  • http://Bobsworld.org Bob

My Mustang is better than Your Datsun. My Sportsteam is better than Your Sportsteam. America’s Army is better than the Chinese Army…the list goes on and on. It’s human nature people and not newsworthy.

Being negative is easy, especially in the anonimous online world. I favor the PS3, but now watch how many people call me an idiot and offer proof because I misspelled anonymous. Being negative is not new to gaming. Let’s talk about Obama or McCain. Let’s talk about Macintosh or Windows. Let’s talk about which pop star is hotter. Let’s talk about Jeff Gordon or Dale Ernhardt. Any of these or any number of other debates, especially online debates, will certainly get all the name calling and dumping on other people’s opposing opinions then they will any really insightful of interesting discussion.

  • jaime

    “how good Microsoft’s software”
in what reality you think you are?
    remember the vista

  • Norm Miller

By the way, my comment is better then Bobs. He was just faster. :)

It is both human nature, My dad can beat up your dad, but it is really the websites that feed it, the websites are driven to get ad revenue, so they have to get mouse clicks, what they have found is that if they can bait a few users into starting a flame war, they will get many people to join in, which generates more add revenue for the web site. if you read many of the articles, you will see they are not some un baised peice, they nearly always through in something to try to start a flame war.

  • not important

This isn’t news, this is Daniel crying about people name-calling his favorite systems. Save this crap for personal blog type posting, this is not news. Daniel, you little sissy.

  • cz

The fact is that all consoles suck!!!!!!!!!! PC gaming is the only true gaming.

  • Mark

It’s only the Xbox owners dumping on PS3 really. I think because they wished they had waited, and not jumped on the first console to come along.

  • Dave

It all boils down to money, and the resolution of cognitive dissonance. One of the ways that people justify spending money (in this case, several hundred dollars) on a purchase is by rationalizing that their product is the best possible product. By knocking the other consoles, you make yourself feel better and satisfied with your own purchase. Also, gamers tend to be a competitive crowd, so this phenomenon is heightened by the competitiveness of the group. My last observation is that the people with the least popular, most expensive product (PS3) seem to be the most vicious group and the Wii owners seem to not really care all that much about flaming others. These are just one person’s opinions. ;-)

my mind is dumber now that I read this

  • JOE V

I personally own all three systems and I play and buy games for all of them, Oh yeh I play PC games too, They all have their plusses and minuses, PS3 has GOW 3 comin out, MGS4:GOP , XBOX has GOW2 and on and on. There all awesome. Especially considering that i used to play games on colleco, and commodore 64, so I am thrilled at how far video games have come along. Look out for the PC comeback with Diablo 3 though : p Xbox and pS3 should be trying to get that to work on the consoles. How awesome would it be if they could work together for a change to bring pc 360 and ps3 together online with 1 game. that would be a massive community. Its easier to get along than to push along

  • EricTetz

They run them down for the exact same reason that people run down opposing sports teams. In this case, the sport is Console War, and the teams are Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but fan loyalty, fervor, and irrationality are no different than for any other sport.

It may have something to do with the fact that a lot of kids can’t afford to own more than one, so they *have* to choose sides. After a few months of increasingly hyperbolic forum discussion, they’ve convinced themselves that the other consoles are complete garbage and that they made the *only* reasonable choice.

  • OMEN

M$ sodware sucks major ass, windows crashes,360 software crashes any software of M$ crashes because M$ copied apple long time ago and M$ copied playstation 1 and 2 with the dvd and online games.
ps2 was the first system to have online games.

if your one of does rich people that pay 3000 every yr to upgrade the PC,but i can play my ps3 for 6 yrs and get a new ps4 that will kick PCs asses egain.
right know PC and ps3 are in the same level, soon PC will surpass but ps3 will still get the exclusives.

  • tgrass21

OMEN – ” PS2 was the first system to have online games ”

No it wasn’t, the Sega Dreamcast had online gaming before PS2 even came out. Xbox had an established system before Sony went online as well.

A glib one word answer for this airhead question. Laziness.

It is far easier to run something or someone down or trivialize an issue with a one word or sharp biting comment then it is to actually take the time to look at someone or something and do the necessary thinking to make an honest, and informed decision or comment.

Video gamers as a group could also be considered the first and the last generation to be truly raised by a visual technological medium as a choice. The author, Jerry Mander, in his book, “In the Absence of the Sacred” delves into this matter some. Our perception of reality is skewed from cradle to grave by this medium. In his book, he has a little test. He says to watch anything on TV and count the number of times that what you are seeing could not actually happen in reality. ‘present day metrocity on a sidewalk, busy traffic, cut to scene on cruise ship from 4 weeks prior, back to present day metrocity sidewalk, cut to internal thoughts from that morning in the kitchen’. That is the way our brains work. Problem is, we need to get the majority of our data in a contigious, experiential mode to maintain a semblence of normality. We don’t. The gamers, and it really isn’t fair to the gamers, it is all of us. Me you, that guy over there, that girl on the cellphone, the guy getting into the taxi, all of us are trying to to make reality conform with our skewed perception of reality. I love that scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”, but you really need to have seen it in a theater. There was that scene where birds came flying up from behind the left of the subject and as the shadows were passing over the ground, the whole theater as one, ducked their heads to the right. I would have loved to have interviewed people as they exited the theater, asking them if they thought there were actual birds in the theater, they would say no, of course not, that’s crazy. Then show em a video of their reaction in the theater during that scene and tell them, “well a very old and very primal part of your brain sure as hec thought there were birds.”

A better answer for the original question would be.

That it is a defense mechanism, based on a perceived reality that allows us to interact and communicate with others while still staying comfortable in our own skins.

Usually the article is biased to begin with. Gamers get worked up over that and feel their comments will balance things out. Although their comments usually end up being biased themselves.

    @OMEN & tgrass21
Sega was the first video game console company to offer first-party online support with a modem for the Saturn through Sega NetLink. Catapult Entertainment’s XBAND modem for the SNES and Genesis pre-dated this, however it was third-party and only offered game-to-game play, no internet.

  • qahar

Like someone commented, there has to be a competition or else it would be like living in a world where only good existed. But the funny part is that this competition is not beneficial to anyone except the people who great the games. They get their money and they work hard to compete with others. What do you get for saying things like “oh xbox 360 games have better graphics than ps3 games” etc. NOTHING!!!!! its not going to get you anywhere except sitting your lazy ass at home and playing video games to find differences that only matter a little.

  • tgrass21

Billy Shears – I never said Dreamcast was first either. I said it had online gaming before PS2.

  • cz

    omen

no i am not one of those people that spends $3000 every year to upgrade my pc. I am not rich either. A lot of people don’t realize that you don’t have to spend much money to upgrade a pc. I only spent 800 to make my pc this past december with all the best parts out there including a monitor. you just have to know how to shop. I also will not have to upgrade my pc to play any games that will come out in the near future since my pc will be able to play all of them on max settings. I do love the PS3, however when it comes to fps pc will always be king because the controls are so much smoother to play with. If they ever make a way for pc, 360, and ps3 gamers to play against each other, and i hope they do, 360 and ps3 gamers will not stand a chance agains pc gamers at least for fps games simply for the fact that the controls are much smoother on pc and it is much easier to react with a mouse than a dpad, or analog stick.

  • jonny boy 84

In reality both consoles are good, but playstation is harder to develop for and some developers are saying that the graphics processor on the 360 is far better to work with because it can handle more (just because ps3 has more graphics memory doesnt mean anything. memory isnt everything)

    Read this link:
    http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-348-1.htm

It is a developers opinion and probably the reason why playstation 3 is loosing exclusives.

Also Microsoft have a much better development suite (Visual Studio has been in use for quite some time now for PC games and is much more refined and XNA). Also it allows developers to port PC games to 360 without many changes been made to the source code.

Not that the xbox is without its problems. It obviously has not been thought through – overheating problems suggest this. I have had RRoD and I can tell u it annoyed me alot. But the live service and now cheap price for a new console are enough for me.

The only reason i dont have a PS3 is because of the lack of games, and the crap online service. and blu-ray just doesnt sell it for me. Its going to be hard going for the laser if i play games and watch movies on it. For me it is a far better console on paper, but specs mean nothing without games. I personally dont like my xbox 360 as much as my old Sega Megadrive. Now that machine had none of this RRoD, or overheating and had some great games.

  • moom

Totally agree with the article, fanboys on both sides are guilty of incredibly tedious console bashing and it’s very wearing for those of us who are cruising the forums looking for simple information (or even, dare I say, balanced opinion).

One reason the problem is so bad is that gamers as a group tend to use more declarative sentences than the overall population (on account of being young, male, highly educated, etc), and generally don’t realize that a lot of the nuance of their communication (how much they’re joking, etc) is lost in text. Of course, they try and lighten things up with smileys and ‘lol’ and stuff, but not all smiles are created equal, and laughs vcan be giggles or cackles or just plain old Mad Evil. It’s easy to interpret stuff as far more aggressive than it’s originally intended. When you get two people both reading more aggression into the other’s statements, then the conversation rapidly spirals into a slanging match. and that’s kind of set the tone for gaming conversations. Sad, really.

  • cass360

I have all three consoles, the point of this is get the best out of three of them. Halo3 (360) MGS(PS3) Mario Kart (Wii). They are all great games, all consoles have downsides. All are different! All great in different ways.

I personally like the 360 more than the other consoles, nothing right now beats xbox live. When home is released we will have to compare, but thats when its released!! 360 is great, ppl that dont own it should try it, and see how good it is.

Ps3 is great also, but still no way near the 360, i know in the long run it will be better but not now!!!

My advice buy the three consoles and get best out of them!!

  • Naylor

I agree that it is human nature to be competitive, but I think with videogame systems in particular people hate the systems that they don’t have. I have been a gamer since the NES days, and I remember talking trash about Genesis because I only had a Super NES. When I could finally afford to buy a Genesis I bought all of the games that I had previously talked trash about.

I learned my lesson and have since then bought every system that comes out. I can’t stand missing out on a great game because I don’t have that system. I know it’s unrealistic to think that everyone can afford to buy every system, especially the way the economy is today, but I think the majority of people that dump on other systems are people that are jealous of a game that is coming out that they can’t play.

  • Pocket

Buy all 3 come on money bags not that I should say much because I do have PS3 and Wii.

I would never buy X-box no matter how good it got. The RROD is just unacceptable. It wasn’t just a few it was a LOT.

I don’t knock it has it’s benefits but that fact alone will make me NEVER get it. I support Microsoft more then then they deserve with my PC purchases.

  • Darkie

It happens because kids are stupid, a company tells them that thier console will be the greatest thing since sliced bread, it will run games at 120fps and be the only true HD experience in the world, and the kids just eat up this marketing babble.

They then go out and over pay for the console and realize two years into the consoles life that the console is no better than the competition, and in most cases inferior, so the kids start to feel stupid, so then they have to defend their stupid choice to buy a console based soley on potential, and marketing hype.

By bashing the other consoles non stop they feel like their console choice was not all that bad, and was the right choice after all, and last but not least, it make them feel less stupid, for being stupid in the first place.

  • UXO

The problem doesn’t really rest with the first person the drop the negativity biscuit, the real problem comes from the second guy, that just can’t resist ignoring the ignorant (no pun) comment made by the first guy. If we could ignore people that start these flame wars, it wouldn’t get everyone else in an uproar. There are people out there that just enjoy tormenting others, mind you, the same people can’t begin to receive in return what they just dished out.

  • 360 HATER 4 LIFE

  • Dave

that is the problem, fanboys like MGPhenom can not reason, they believe all the hype put out by the publisher of their choice, so he has already drank the sony koolaid and declared every future ps3 game better then all future 360 games,

    Motorstorm: Pacific Rift > Pure

    Bioshock PS3 > Bioshock 360

  • OMEN

hah aa 360 fanboys are funny.
ps3 has more exclsives and 360 and better games.
u can cry all u want, but PS3 online is the same thing as live and FREE,if u say otherwise than u never own a ps3 and u are a fanboy who talks pure SHIT.

  • MeanMrMustard

Omen, your earlier comments were proven to be factually incorrect – and now you have returned with more ramblings.

PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE PROBLEM (I cannot emphasise that enough) with your blinkered views. No doubt you spout your nonsense all over the internet, spamming message boards and youtube. Surely your time could be spent more constructively. I recommend you get a hobby.

Why are so called fanboys (I’m looking at you, Omen) so emotionally involved with what is essentially a piece of metal and plastic?

I will never understand why people defend their console brand as if it were a member of their family. The reality is Microsoft and Sony are multi-billion dollar corporations whose executives and directors couldn’t care less about the gaming consumer.

  • jonny boy 84

Thank you MeanMrMustard! OMEN obviously takes his ps3 to bed with him!!

And you are quite right. If for one minute Sony or Microsoft think that their console is no longer making money because few people want it then you can be sure that they will stop manufacturing them, not even thinking twice about loyal fanboys, and they will start on something else – because to them it’s an investment that needs to make them money.

Look at SEGA and Atari. they dropped the hardware and went into software publishing, for these reasons!

  • OMEN

fagsss get a room^^^ they cant handle the truth.

  • shannon-comabob

    Oh sweeeeeeet irony!!!

i personally own a 360 (Since launch) and also have a wii – the wii never (NEVER) gets played whereas the xbox is on constantly!!!

i dont like sony – contrllers too small, games arent too great )not bad some are quite good but yet to have one make me wanna own a ps3 for)

again this isnt anything but my6 own opinion –

i dont bother getting into stupid childish flame wars about which consoel is better – yeh the RROD issue sucks but (and its a BIG but) MS DO pay to pick it up, repair, and send it bacvk (mine was within two weeks!)

again im not tryin to start a lame war… – just my opinion..

everyuone shoyuld just be happy with what they have – if they (like me) prefer on console over the other then fine be like that – this has been going on since SEGA VS NINTENDO – Mario VS Sonic etc etc – it will never end!

i only actually commented here to point out the irony of THIS SITE saying that the Falame wars need to end etc etc – when THIS SITE is from what i have seen in my workday wanderings is THE BIGGEST perpitrator of flame bait…

considering 90percent of the google news articles for Product-Reviews are usually along the lines of “Sam Houser says PS3 is better then 360″ or “Sony Exec says they have already WON the console war!” followed by oodles of comments made by people saying stuff like – PS3 FTW!!!

    irony.

    oh yeah i forgot! – 360 FTW!!!!

    (see – annoying isnt it?)

    -peace

  • Jayarcea

I want to start this buy saying I own a PS3. And I like it. Alot. But the only reason I bought it was when I went to but a console to play GTA4, Woolworths had run out of XBoxes. To me, the console is just the equipment you need to play the game. I couldn’t give a toss about all this fanboy nonsense. Slagging puople off purely because they own a different console.

Both systems have awesome games. Both systems have really impressive hardware. But what counts are the games and the experience you have playing them. I recently clocked MGS4, and I have to say that it was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Well worth me getting the PS3.

But would I still like to own a X box 360. Yes I would. Because of games like Fable 2 (I played the original on my old X box) Halo 3 and Gears of War. But untill then I’m happy with my purchase and will continue to be so.

  • http://www.waynesdrainsmontana.com WayneSMT

man this thread is still going, sweet

  • NomadeWolf

Gammers bash consoles they don’t buy and/or they don’t even know because they don’t want to admit the truth. And the truth is they payed a lot of money for a gaming platform, and now they want to play a certain game, and in order to do that they must buy another gaming platform… And that hurts! (in wallet, mostly)
Why are there so many platforms?
    Why are there exclusive games?
Why don’t all games are made for PC?
    The answer? PROFITS, PROFITS, PROFITS!!!
They want to force people to spend twice (or more) the money they usually would have to! They are reinventing the PC (todays consoles are getting more and more like the PCs, copying their abilities) and the manufacturers are al happy, as if its a great deal…
Why don’t Microsoft, instead of making an XBOX and foring people to buy it, makes just the game dedicated OS and allows it to be installed on a regular PC?
Why don’t the others do the same?
Why do people buy these platforms, anyway?!?!?!?!
