We all know that the Xbox 360 hardware has had more problems than the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 combined, RROD has become a joke and also public debate of why it happened.
The Xbox 360 does a lot right on the software front, but many news sites have long guessed that Microsoft rushed the 360 to beat the Sony PS3 to the market.
Today we have had some information sent in from someone who goes by the name of “Chris” and claims to of worked on the original Xbox 360 prototypes back in 2004.
They say that Microsoft’s biggest mistake was launching the 360 a year earlier than the PS3 and it’s this reason why there have been so many hardware issues.
The thing that jumps out at me, as I’ve noticed since launch, is that the PS3 costs much more than $400, $500, even $600 to produce, yet Sony still sells the console for less, and it’s all for the consumer.
I actually worked with Microsoft on the original Xbox 360 prototypes back in 2004, and, despite the accumulated cost of the hardware, Microsoft increased the price of retail sale above the production cost.
By the 360’s launch, I was a bit ashamed to see that the Xbox 360 was so expensive even though it was cheap to produce, and that’s when several other Microsoft devs in my group and I were surprised to see that the PS3 launched at only $600.
As a developer, I was really curious about each console’s hardware, and if we had put the Playstation 3’s hardware in our original Xbox 360 prototype, it would have cost well over $700.
The Playstation 3 consists of well over $750, but I’m amazed that Sony can sell the console for $400. In my opinion, that was a very smart move on Sony’s behalf.
Due to work terms, I’ve been prohibited from saying this until early 2008, but Microsoft severely rushed development of the 360, and we had a very short time window to work with in order to launch the 360 a year earlier. That was our, and Microsoft’s, biggest mistake.
As a result, the Xbox 360 has major hardware issues. I switched over to the PS3 when my Xbox 360, the console that I helped develop, RROD’d for the 4th time.
If what Chris says were true then it would explain all the Xbox 360 problems since launch, feel free to leave a comment below or read more Xbox 360 news.

What is the point of putting one console up agienst each other if you already own one. You are just gonna talk trash about theoneyou don’t own. Microsoft yes is in the lead as of now, but that could change….and you know what IT DOESNT MATTER. None of the next gen consoles are going away. NONE have exclusives that the other doesn’t have a counterpart to. And for games that are on both systems, yes there are games that will be better on one while there will be games that are better on the other too. Yes Sony has blueray, ok… Microsoft has Xbox live and now more software features. The 2 systems balance out. PS3 has more hardware. No one should be knocking halo 3 as its sales numbers speak for them selves. Most these fanboys are talking trash and didn’t even buy a system themselves. They went MOMMY i want this and whined until they got it, much like there whining now until they feel you agree with them.
I don’t think theres a need to fight about the two consoles. Since there is really no point, both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. That is why i bought both. There shouldnt be a PS3 or 360 war… The point of both system is for you to enjoy. XBox fixed thier problem with the RROD and new games are coming out for PS3. Both companies just want your money this is why there is all this hype for the “Console War”…If the system is really for consumers both systems will be given away for free. Am I right or Am i right? You should all be happy there have been improvements in the Video Game Market. If not you’ll still be playing pong or pacman to this date!
“EricT Microsoft $7 billion in losses? LOL
Where did you grab this figure fanboy?”
Why are you saying “EricT”? I didn’t say that. The only fanboy around here is jojo.
I have the x box 360 and a ps3, and it’s not even a contest. The x box blows the ps3 out of the water. There hasn’t been a single title I’ve wanted to play on the ps3, I tried Metal Gear Solid 4, but like all the others, it bored me. Resistance was a horrible shooter compared to anything, but Gears of War on the 360 is as good as it gets. Anyone that owns both systems know that Sony puts almost nothing into their online rooms. The $50 I spend each year on x box is worth every penny because x box live runs almost effortlessly. I am excited for God of War 3, but I had to wait a year and a half to play something that might be worth the money I spent on a rushed system. The ps3 is a great blu-ray player, if you don’t burn down your house by falling asleep with the system on. It runs very hot, and if you have it in an enclosed entertainment center, the engine will probably burn itself out. I did have my original x box 360 red light me 3 different times, requiring me to send it in for repair. On the 4th red light Microsoft did a system overhaul replacing all the inner componants of my system, and it has worked perfectly since. Still even though my 360 has broken 4 times, x box paid for everything, and if anything goes wrong they will replace it or refund my money. Thats great customer service, anda company willing to pay a billion dollars to make gamers happy. When will the ps3 make me happy?
Chris now works at sonydefenseforce.com
Seriously. I could write you an e-mail claiming to be on the creative team behind Xbox LIve or Sixaxis or friend codes and you’d just believe me and post it? This site rocks!
Golden - You should know better than to enclose equipment that produces heat. I’ve had the PS3 since Dec. 2007 and it has been running Folding@Home 24/7 -except when I play a game or watch a blu-ray movie. I haven’t had any heat issues because I use my brain and don’t try to overheat my equipment.
I purchased a Xbox360 Nov. 2006 but I use the PS3 more. Thank goodness that I haven’t had the RROD, yet. Everyone has their personal preferences and I prefer the PS3.
Great journalistic work here, seriously, you should be fired. Oh wait, check your mail, “mike” just sent an email saying there’s peace in the middle east, it must be true!!!
Obviously Golden, Sony will never make you happy and that is based on your statements. Sounds like if you could marry your XBOX 360 you would, I worked at a Walmart for 2 years. During that time I work in the Electronic department and I would have to say that almost everyday I worked we have a XBOX 360 returned due to scratched disk, overheating, etc (and yes the XBOX 360 does scratch disk) badly! However I did purchase a 360, had it for ohhhh 2 days and took it back, I know people like the GOW, but I personally hated the game (no fun at all, unless you play online) and I personally don’t want to deal with any snot nosed brat cussing at me online. 2 months later I got my money together and bought myself a PS3 60gb. I have 10 games and over 100 blu-ray’s and not looking back - best purchase I have ever made. Plus. PS!! - it cost less to upgrade the hard drive since it uses a standard 2.5″ drive!! I don’t have to resort to MS Properitary Hard drive interface (i know you can use USB, why should I??) plus my PS3 has had several Firmware upgrades and continues to add new features and no matter what is or isn’t on the PS network, one thing that strikes me is that it is FREE! and Sony still does what they can to bring me great games and demos and etc etc. PSSSS… The wedding is this Friday, LOL!!!!
i sell my xbox 360
its the worst console i owned in my life, and i have 30 years, so i owned a lot of consoles
okay golden , youve not played GT5 prologue then in 1080p and if everyone else in the world thinks MGS4 is good even non biased gaming sites and mags .would you be saying taht if it was on xbox -oh thats right it canm be it would require 7 dvds , go to VG CHARTZ and see how PS3 pumps xbox sales week in week out , and will soon overtake it in sales
stick with your XBOX 3-FIX-ME, enjoy RROD and getting scammed to use wireless and play online
i own all consoles and my Xbox is binned as it had one good game GOW . Wii is for fun party games only as the graphiocs suck ass .
