My Apple iPhone is slow after software 2.0 update

My Apple iPhone is slow after software 2.0 update

By: Daniel Chubb | July 20, 2008 | 98 Comments

iPhone Slow

Many Apple iPhone users on July 11 experienced massive problems with iTunes and updating their iPhones to the new software 2.0 update, although we had no problems updating, we are now finding one really annoying problem.

While I am not sure why, the iPhone has a massive delay when doing different tasks ever since I upgraded to the new firmware 2.0. At first I thought it may just be my iPhone, then we find out this issue has affected a lot more users and it is big news.

Before the update, clicking on a contact, switching between different areas of the iPhone and other tasks were almost instant but now there is a delay that can be up to 3 or 4 seconds.

Is your iPhone 3G or first generation iPhone affected by this, does it have a delay in some areas after upgrading to software 2.0?

You will know if your affected as it’s a major difference, we have found 6 people so far this has affected, lets find out how big a problem this really is.

Mine iPhone has been very slow since upgrading to 2.0. A reboot helps for a few hours, then you must repeat it I’d put up with delays scrolling, entering text (passwords show the last 1 or 2 characters typed for a second or two), and frequent browser crashes. I would like to restore back to version 1.

  • Roscoe

Yes, my Iphone is very slow. and at this speed I could not use it over time.

  • Neil Byron

My iPhone is now very sluggish after upgrading to 2.0. I am not happy about it at all. Sometimes the phone is almost unusable. I would seriously entertain the idea of downgrading back to 1.0 if I knew how.

At first I thought it just might be me, with a large address book (2,500 contacts). But it seems to effect most everyone, even the 3G phones.

    Argh!

  • Colby

Ditto…I thought it was just me until I read this. I sure hope they come up with a solution to this.

  • Justin

My iphone has turned into a real pain to operate ever since the update. This new update was worthless considering the trouble I have to deal with now when loading different tasks.

  • http://none mike

    agree. sluggish

  • Steve

Yes, same lag with the UI on my 3G iPhone. Look at Apple discussions forum, over 200 comments on the lag issue, and Apple Insider has a news item as well, over 150 comments.

  • David

I have the new iPhone 3G, never owned the original. This makes it tough for me to gauge the slowness that many of you might be experiencing. Still, I think I am experiencing this slowness as well. Sometimes my contacts will take almost 5 seconds to load, and switching between programs can sometimes result in a 3 or 4 second pause before anything happens. I also hope this gets fixed, because these types of problems are reminding of the problems that I consistently had and hated about Windows Mobile (GASP!).

  • Peter

I agree. My iPhone 3g is much slower than my wife’s iPhone 1.
It also fails to make calls and when I switch from wireless to Edge or 3G I have to reboot in order to get any eMail to work.
I went to Apple and they have heard all this before and say a new update should be available in 3 weeks.
    Im not holding my breath.

  • vanessa

    Yes, Yes, YES!!!!
My phone now freezes all the time and I have to reboot it at least once a week!
I’ve debated purchasing the 3g but I am now hearing similar problems as well with the new iphone.
What I can’t figure out….Hackers have already developed a way to fix these issues and yet Apple said it will take 3 weeks to correct. Hmmmmmm.
Thanks Apple for slashing the price and making the people who purchased it when it came out feel like royal idiots and not to mention….screwing up my current iphone.
    Much Appreciated!

  • Vicky

Yes, I can confirm. I have an iPhone of 8GB (is it first or second generation?) and for me, switching from a sms log to another, or writing a new sms takes longer than it used to. I am hoping for an update and checking it’s availability in iTunes, but there isn’t one yet. Hmmm

  • David

    mine is sluggish as well

  • Shelley

Yes… very slow since upgrading… seems convenient to me. I am now addicted to this phone and will probably have to go out and buy the 3G. I am sure there are plenty of customers in the same boat. Again, very, too, convenient!

  • http://SuperSlow PaYo

I have an Edge and my wife has a 3G. they are both slow, maybe too slow for such a hype of a phone. It is almost impossible to use the contact list.(Note I only have 50 contact cards) It is very disappointing and I just which there was a way to go back to the original version which worked pretty good to me.

  • barbara briner

Yes, I have a new 3G and it is VERY SLUGGISH now, specially with contact, calenders and gps. There is now a long delay time and it seems as if the touch screen does not respond quickly (or not at all sometimes) any more. Are there any solutions yet? I find myself swearing and mumbling to myself constantly. Solution NEEDED!

  • john

How can apple release this software!! They would have known of this issue pre release. Every 3g phone I have tried has this rediculous lag that is unnaceptable, especially after “upgrading” from an original iPhone. Very disapponting from a company with normally such hi standards. Surely the test iPhones used by apple employees would have this, as far as I’m aware it’s all phones with this software. Sort it out please before letting the poor consumer die of frustration!

  • Dan

My phone is extremely slow since the software update. To the point it’s almost unusable

  • Leslie

I really regret upgrading since now my phone is very slow when I switch from app to app. I went to the Apple store in San Francisco and was told by one of the sales reps that they know about the problem and that there is no way to downgrade. He literally told me that I’m just stuck with my phone and I absolutely hate using my phone now. I asked about getting the G3 and he said it would be even slower! I really think this hurts Apple’s credibility. Why did they release an upgrade that ruined my original phone?

My first gen iPhone is totally gummed up since upgrading. Much to my chagrin. Slow in searching, slow in typing, slow in switching, slow in phone mode. Very unhappy.

  • Scott

Since the 2.0 upgrade, my phone is slow to show contacts, emails, text messages…..safari and texting quit for no reason, I am very unhappy with the upgrade, twice as slow……

  • http://SuperSlow PaYo

People! I just fixed the slowness of my iPhone after the 2.0 update.
After several resets on iTunes, nothing seams to work, so I did a factory reset on the phone itself instead of iTunes and on iTunes I erased the backup file. It takes a while but its working great now. Before this, it was just a useless phone with internet that I could not even see my contact list without waiting 8 seconds to load. try it out. It worked for me.

  • Willis

Easy fix at least for me… Try removing AIM from your Iphone I did and it resulted in great success I realize most people probably have this app (since it’s free) but until they fix it I have removed it from my phone.

  • http://www.englishliteraturenotes.com Dustin

My 1st generation iPhone has been slow ever since I upgraded to 2.0. Meeeee toooooooo!

It seemed to get really slow after I got trigger happy downloading all the free applications on the App Store that my heart desired. So I deleted all but 5 that I use all the time. That helped some but this is so annoying!

I am currently experiencing 3 to 4 second delays when typing, button pushing being completely ignored 2 to 3 times, slow opening of the applications.

  • Dont Mess with The Matty

Since version 2.0 update my iPhone has slowed, like everyone else’s including my neighbour’s iphone. This is due to crap apple software/hardware as the software requires far more hardware performance than the iPhone currently has due to cost cutting. Apple is shooting itself in the foot by pushing cheap crap software/hardware into the market as everyone will simply flush their iphone and buy better quality items from others.
APPLE SUCKS, as soon as another maker has an alternative I will switch from the POLICE STATE CALLED APPLE, APPLE STANDS FOR SHIT SOFTWARE AND SHIT HARDWARE!!

  • Jerry

Very slow. I updated to 2.0 then downgraded to 1.1.4 and it is still very slow.
Reboot seems to fix the problem for a few minutes then it starts being sluggish again.

  • jennifer

same here…glad to hear it is not just me, but sorry it is happening to all of you too…it really makes me mad, especially being 8 months pregnant…my patience is already too thin :) I don’t have time to wait!!! has anyone found a solution?

  • Matt

3-4 seconds would be luxury. My phone will freeze for half a minute at times without warning.

I have a suspicion that mobileMe is part of it. I don’t think they have resolved how to give the UI priority over the network layer. It really makes the phone non-usable as a phone in business.

  • Busrydr

I was searching for this issue and see its not just me. You can really notcie this slowness when texting or entering passwords. The password characters actually show on the display for a brief second showing some type of deplay in response.

E-mail downloads take much longer also.

Anyone one know if Apple is addressing this or if there is a fix?

  • Texasyes

My iPhone is slow to the point of almost not being able to use it ever since the upgrade. I can click on an icon and wait for 30 seconds before it opens. Or it never opens but just goes back to the home screen. In fact, I can dial a number right now without going into a voice mail and pressing “call back”.

This iPhone is a brick – not a phone.

  • pat

I have to rub my finger on the screen about 100 times to get it to turn on. The 2.0 update ruined my iPhone.

  • http://www.shadesofbeautiful.com Darwin Sayo

Oh jeez, super slow. I first noticed it hen trying to scroll through my contacts. I am absolutely disappointed.

  • stefanie

Same here. My iPhone is horribly slow. Text message screen, contacts, everything…slow, slow, slow.

My phone crashes for no reason at all as well.

    Very disappointed.

  • http://www.siteisdead.com Matthew

My phone now crashes after every three to four web pages. The apps from the appstore do not work at all (I was using two). The phone is not usable.

Does anyone know if ATT will move to a different phone from these plans?

  • mike

    Well,
Updated the 2G phone to the 2.0 software.
Phone then proceeded to get real slow.
After a week, the phone had a non recoverable crash – Apple shop could do nothing and gave me a new phone, so I lost everything.

Installed new phone with 2.0 – now it’s experiancing the same problems as above with slow texting etc.

2.0 is a piece of junk – do not install it – Apple should pull it from their site until they fix it, instead of ruining more phone.

So much for all the apple hype – A broken phone is not much use to anyone, no matter how cool it is.

Not exactly feeling hopeful that this phone will last long given what has happened to date – at these prices, its not good enough.

Don;t get me started on AT&T customer service who make a $6000 mistake on my last bill…………..

  • johnny

    2.0.1 destroyed my phone….
    Now my phone is useless

  • George

Wow – this phone might be cool, but I simply can not continue using it for business needs. It’s simply too frustratingly slow to pull up contacts, scroll to find my contacts, type SMSs, and switch from one screen to another. Then of course you can’t forward a vCard or even forward an SMS. My 5 year old Nokia can do that.

Thw worst things though is that I was up at 6:30am, unpluggd it, had a few meetings, made a call or two, checked a few emails, sent a few emails, didn’t listen to any music, put it on flight mode for my 1.5 hour flight (twice), and made a few calls as I got to the airport on the way home – that was 6PM and the phone was dead. Lucky I didn’t have to then go out to dinner etc or make a conf call to Europe (OK – I know, sounds a bit wanky, but that’s what I need to do).

That’s bloody useless – my blackberry lasted 3 days doing all the same tasks.

I think I’m going to give this to the Missus and go back to the BB.

Oh, yeah, seeing as I am venting – perhaps they can put a little flashing light on a portion of the screen to tell you that there is an email or a new message.

  • greg

my phone isn’t only slow when switching from different applications but also trying to type a text or email, it takes forever for the keys to respond and I have to stop every 4 or 5 letters to let it catch up to the word. Thought about buying the new one just because of it but isn’t there a old statement, “burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me”!

    Greg

  • Renee

My phone is also extremely SLOOOOOOOW since I did the upgrade. BIG disappointment to say the least.

  • Andrew

Yes, my (edge) iPhone has slowed down considerably – to the point of annoyance to be honest. Navigate contacts is painfully slow. Also, Typing in any native iphone app there is tremendous lag between my typing and the display anywhere between 5-7 letters behind as I type. Launching any default iPhone apps takes many seconds to load. Its not so bad that I can’t use my phone, its just that if it gets any worse, I’ll find it unexceptable and I assume many others will flip out with me. Any will not consider a future upgrade unless it is fixed.

  • http://happyskateboarding.cvom Ronnie

The phone is slow and seems to bog out at times. I did the reset (hold home & top button and shut it down) When it started up it worked good for a while… My first gen phone worked great.. then I upgraded the software and now I have to phones that don’t work as smoothly as I’d like them.. or should.

Come on… fix the problems. I want to return home, scroll numbers easily and all that stuff.

    ughhhh!

  • Michelle

I hadn’t realized that it was the update that caused this, but am so fed up with my iphone’s pauses, delays and slowness that I started to think back… and sure enough, it all started after the update.

Symptoms: takes a few seconds, sometimes up to 5 to “register” touches on the screen. Everything from typing (and then sometimes it will type out all of the delayed letters at once after the delay), to clicking on “Save” “Don’t Save” “Cancel” to, to toggling between/among windows, to scrolling contacts… Everything. It’s frustrating, especially since many of us (or at least I) own and am loyal to Apple products (own iphone, ipod, powerbook g4, macbook pro, time capsule (another disappointment thus far) precisely because they seem trouble-free, well-designed and stable.

On a more macro level, it seems to me that Apple’s increased popularity and market share have put a lot of pressure on them to grow very quickly, ramp up production, maximize revenues. Meanwhile operations can’t keep up with marketing/sales. They’re releasing products and software before they’re really up to (old school) Apple standards.

    Their packaging is top-notch, though… ;)

  • Christian

I have the same problem. Very slow typing of emails and so on. And rebooting helps for me, too. Good to know this. Hopefully they will give a patch soon…

  • maya m

I was so stoked with my Iphone. The best phone I ever had easy to use good looking.great apps. Then I downloaded the 2.0 upgrade,I now have a phone that doesn’t play the music that is pictured. The photos are screwed up not able to click on pic and have the one i picked show up but a another one all together. When i type it has a glitch that makes it really slow then it catches up sometimes but not always. The worst thing is that the phone gets really hot and can’t keep a charge. Its pretty much dead most of the time now. the price they charge at ATT for the serviceand the problems I’m ready to chuck it all and get a LG and a new service provider…:(

  • Stan

same here… what can we do??

  • vicky

there is an 2.0.1 update. does it help?

  • glenn

mine is very very slow even after upgrade

  • Chany Lee

I couldn’t believe this is an apple iphone.
No phones are as slow as my iphone3g!
    This is a stupid beauty.

  • Erich

POS!! I’m ready to go get a CrackBerry and throw this thing off a bridge!!

Seriously disappointed, Version 2.0 has ruined this once lightning quick piece of technology! Shame on you, Jobs.

  • http://www.mallchin.com Martin Allchin

Yes — slower than a three legged donkey in a charity race!

  • Vanessa

On July 21st I posted the same issues as all of you on the 2.0 update. My phone sucked. As soon as the 2.0.1 became available I figured what the hell…my phone was already a POS why not just see how much worse it could be and thankfully it has much improved. No more sluggish, paused, rebooting, standing at a complete standstill while trying to open apps. Looks like the 2.0.1 fixed the issues and I’ve been running it for a few days now with NO PROBLEMS!!!!!
    Good Luck
Oah…and just a side note….i’m still not happy about this APPLE. I am now going to be a little more cautious before jumping on the apple band wagon.

  • Chany Lee

I have a new iphone 3g with 2.01 but mine is also very slow and it freezes too often.

  • McStealth

same here, I got a 1st gen with pwned 2.0.1. Thought this might be a problem with the pwnage, but obviously not.
That’s just annoying. It was much faster before I upgraded. It slows down my whole workflow. Don’t know why Apple released such a crap.

Opening Contacts 3-4s, opening Settings 4-5s; being smart enough to stay away from 2.0 – priceless…

  • http://www.anothersidetours.com Kenneth Lippman

This sucks. I am experiencing the delay between applications and other issues that I did not have before….Can someone please help me? I am going to need to get a different phone…this is ridiculous.

  • Anastasios

Apple fix this asap. I thought I bought the best phone out there now I’m just disappointed with this sms lag. Also Why can’t you forward texts and send them to multiple people. My old samsung could do that!!!!

  • Chany Lee

I am tired of wasting my time with an iphone. This is a stupid phone.
My final conclusion is that the iphone is a nice looking toy for kids!
    NOT for a business man.
Don’t be fooled by lots of reviews from many so-called professional reviewers..
I think they all get paid to write those excellent reviews unless they are stupid enough to be fooled by skin deep beauty of iphone like me.
iPhone is no more than an expensive toy! Period.

  • julie

I just updated a few days ago and now my phone is so slow it’s almost worthless

  • JULIO ELIAS

THE NEW UPGRADE SUCKS. IT TAKES FOREVER TO GET NEW E-MAILS AND YOU HAVE TO RESET YOUR PHONE SEVERAL TIMES A DAY IN ORDER TO GET NEW MAIL. IT’S ALSO A PROBLEM TO SEND E-MAILS.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF YOU KNOW HOW TO GO BACK TO THE OLD SETTINGS?

  • andrew

Version 2.0.1 resolved all my issues that I reported in my previous comment.

  • Chany Lee

I only know about Version 2.01.
it is stil very slow as all the complaints shown above.

  • Chany Lee

I never use 3g network beacuse of weak reception in Toronto area.

  • iphone cockup

This is really bad I’m thinking of cancelling my contract with o2 UK and just getting the Nokia n95 or crackberry software has messed the phone up.

Dropped calls, slow very bad scene if you know what I mean.

  • Amber Vargo

Mine is also very slow. Hence how I found this page. I thought I had too many apps but I really am not using any of my memory.

  • chsknight

okay i got a first gen for free and it was locked and unactivated
and so i pwned it with 2.01 and its really freaking slow sometimes
like at times its an amazing phone
others it makes me wanna break a window with it!!!
i kinda wanna go back to my lg shine
it might just be cause i pwned it
    lamez

  • chsknight

okay so im gonna try and pwn 2.02 and see how that goes and give you guys an update

  • Matt

So I loaded 2.0.2. Some stuff is faster – it seems there is less keyboard lag.

But it erased all of my contacts mysteriously in the middle of the day. Perhaps an issue with MobileMe?

I wouldn’t upgrade if you are on MobileMe.

  • david

I have 2.1 and it’s slow typing is really slow safari crashes all the time my iPhone 3g just typing this it’s slow. I hope they fix this This is my second iPhone. Come on apple

  • Craig

I’m so happy(not) to see others have the same problem with their first gen iphone and it looks like the new one as well.

Apples new 2.02 update didn’t do anything that I can see to speed up the phone.

Apple, get our phones back on track. I have been a loyal and referring member of the Apple family since 1984! I have the first Mac. I have fought with many people about the greatness of Apple versus the world.

Don’t let me down. Get the Iphone back up to snuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gaz

I have a 1st gen iphone and recently upgraded to v2. The lag is seriously annoying. However… Search on google for an app called “ziphone”. This will let you “down grade” to v1. Hope this helps

  • Chris

Not that MACrosoft will ever admit they screwed up… but I’m adding my complaint too. Perhaps if enough people post online, the problems with the 2.0+ software on the first generation iPhone will get some press. All I hear about is the 2nd generation iPhones on the 3G network.

Since upgrading, there is a noticable lag time between functions, I am getting more dropped calls, the keyboard ‘pauses’ creating misstyped words, and my internet connection fails (‘safari can not connect to the network) over Edge. I’ve even tried deleting apps, thinking the extra memory space would help. No luck.

I’ve been a MAC products user for over 10 years, but this latest fiasco is making me seriously consider switching to a smart-phone by another carrier. Besides, MAC is starting to run their company like Microsoft. Lock them into your product, and make it a pain in the ass to switch to a competitors product. Plus, their design is getting watered down and PC like. MACrosoft!

  • Carl

I am very upset. My iphone was fine until the recent update. Now its very slow. VERY! Whats the deal?? What do I have to do to get this phone working properly.

  • Rob Kong

Got the 3G iphone a week ago and have noticed the delay before apps respond. I’m on version 2.02 (5C1) – I beleive the latest version. Hope this will be resolved soon….

  • jt

i agree with you all. i dont really use aps and i have the 1st gen. i used to be able to type a bible in no time now a sentance still types after my fingers have been done typing for quiet some time.. and yea i have to reboot and it fixes it forawhile then slow again… weak

  • Jordan

I haven’t really had any trouble with this, except for one thing. At random times, it is almost impossible to type. Each key takes so long to register that it takes a good amount of time to get out one text message.

  • paradisenow

I have a 1st gen iPhone and it has been acting up as well since my upgrade even

  • Tom

Had a 1st gen iPhone that started lagging after the 2.0 upgrade. Went to the Apple store and they told me it’s because the 1st gen processor is slower than the 3G version and I wouldn’t experience any lag in the 3G. So, I upgraded and….still lagging.

Glad I’m not the only one.

By the way, rebooting or making a call does nothing to affect the lag for me.

  • JeffThompson

Yes. Big problem. We have two iphones. One original and one 3G. Both quite slow and buggy since the 2.0 update. Email downloading is very slow and often requires a reset to work. Very disappointing. Don’t expect this with Apple.

  • Wayne

    Same. Pissed.

  • Chad

same here. i have the 2nd gen of iphone, and after 2.0 its just about impossible to txt for to use any programs. take forever to load, then when txting takes like 2-3 sec for the letter to show up. when r they ever going to fix this.

  • Kyle

I’m having the same slowness problems and I’m very irritated about it.

  • dom

Same problem, the keyboard takes and age to respond as well.

  • Arthur Valdez

    I just putchased 2!!!! POS x 2. I feel jipped.

  • Tiane

I have all the problems posted above and now even a bigger proplem…I can’t even use my keypad nor access my recent calls, or voicemail to check messages. When I tap on the phone button, it pops to the malfunctioning/frozen kepad screen then 4 seconds after, it pops back to the home screen. I’m *&%$%&* pissed! Can’t make phone calls unless I go to the contact button then choose my contacts then choose my number and each of these 3 steps takes atleast a few seconds to load. Such a pain just to make a phone call. What good is a phone when you can’t even use it properly!!!

  • http://eh? random bloke

Clearing your old messages, then closing + re-opening the SMS app helps – not an ideal solution, but it’s a workaround for the moment.

The implementation of SQLlite (what’s used for the SMS database) is rubbish and can’t hold more than about 100 records without a hefty slowdown.

Hope this helps until Apple fix the problem.

  • lp_096

Just hold your power and home button until the phone reboot. Hope this help

  • Jon

Couple of fundamental problems if using this as a business phone:
    – can’t send business cards
    – can’t listen to voice mail through the bluetooth headset even though making calls through the headset works fine. Oddly this function worked OK with version 1.0. So if you are driving you cannot listen to your voicemail unless you pick the phone up. And the speaker phone is too quiet.
Also annoying that you can’t forward amusing texts with an i phone.

Does anyone know if these problems will be fixed with future upgrades?

I find the i phone really handy for business but only if you also keep a ‘proper’ phone as well. i have a Nokia 6500 + the i phone and between them can do pretty well everything. Just a pity I have to carry 2 phones around.

  • jess magness

i also find this problem with my iphone after the upgrade

  • Michael Christian

I have the same problem (sad ) also I live in a large city ! So I was thinking I might get all this free wifi stuff but NO nota unless I’m at home right next to my laptop and my landline gee thank you ! If I go to the edge of town FORGET it . I keep waiting bcz I was hoping it was just a glitch and soon it would all work out but I’m getting over the waiting and about to shoot holes in it hahahaha ummm help us !!!

  • http://www.a2.is Arnar G. Kárason

I have the same problems, my iphone is seriusly slow, specially when opening notes, or my contacts, my browser keeps crashing and opening up the phone app and switching to the key pad takes abput 10 seconds, then there often a delay when entering the number so its really bad is there a proper solution to this ?

  • Kylee

Yes very slow to respond and is very annoying i hope apple fixes this soon.

  • mads

i have the same problem, it´s really slow now.
and everybody i know who has an iphone, has the same problem…. hopefully the problem will be fixed soon

  • Jay

YES! After I installed 2.0 software for my original iPhone, a lot of applications ran incredibly slow. It also takes incredibly long to install a new app (even if it is a free “lite” app). Annoys me so much. The apps also often stop working after some time. Love the iPhone, but I hate how slow it is. Really regret not getting the new 3gs or installing newer software. Without installing software version 2.2.1 or above, I can NOT install any new apps from app store. I am considering installing to 3.0 software. The iPhone is arguably my FAVORITE smart phone that has ever been produced. I’m so sad that my phone lags so much.

  • Courtney

    My iphone too!! so irritating!

  • Matt

My iPhone is extremely slow since the update.

  • anwar al ayash

my iphone always freezing, dead, sometime i shoulkd wait 3 mints to get it back alive just to make a call, what is the use of having phone and you can’t make a call when you want, while my son has blackberry it is running very fast email phone calls videos, really i am thinking to change my iphone to blackberry, sorry to lose the options which iphone has it, but it seems no solution for the freezing problems in iphone

  • Jeremy

Both my partner and I upgraded our iphone software last week, and we both noticed, independently, how much it has slowed down! We do not have AT&T, in fact, we live in Spain, so this seems to be a software issue. Will Apple release a fix?!

My iPhone is now very sluggish after upgrading to 2.0. I am not happy about it at all. Sometimes the phone is almost unusable. It is so slow loading my text and mostly everything. What is going to happen.
