UK missing out on Sony PS3 Movies & TV Shows

Sony was proud to announce it’s new PlayStation Video store for the PSN at E3 2008, and then in the evening they made the service Live on the Playstation 3 with more than 1,200 pieces of TV content and 300 movies.
There was no 2.42 firmware update needed, if you have 2.41 on your PS3 then you will be able to view the store just fine in the United States and this is where many will be unhappy.
The rest of Europe and the UK have still got a limited amount of video content today, while the US PSN has movies from movie studios like Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, MGM, Lionsgate, Disney, 20th Century Fox and obviously Sony Pictures.
There are a lot of people in Europe and it amazes me how they get left out for some time on new launches, is it just me who finds this true?
Some forums have been alive with posts asking where the PS3 movie download store is, the reason for this was the fact that its only a tiny capsule icon in the upper left hand corner next to Games.
Once you click this on the US PSN, you will find a selection that’s broken down to Top Downloads (empty at the moment), Purchase, Rental, and Available in HD, Anime, Television, Movies and New Arrivals.
The service could do with more information like IMDB has, although you do get basic info like release dates, cast info, language, size and length.
The only other problem we can find is with high definition video, it seems that you cannot buy HD content and only rent it. Once you rent a HD video/movie you get 14 days to view it, but be aware that if you start playing the file then you have to watch within 24 hours.
If you live in Europe, are you bothered that you cannot access the new movie download service yet on the PS3?

Im not bothered that it hasnt been launched in UK yet, i wouldnt download from it anyway
I don’t think i’d download from it either will have to see what the rental cost will be for the UK, if it’s cheaper than Blockbusters then maybe i’d consider it…
It always takes longer to bring stuff like this to the UK/EU because of the different licensing rules. Hopefully it won’t take as long as it took Microsoft to launch the video service in the UK/EU!
To be honest I find things like this overpriced and inflexible - why not 14 days to watch it as much as you like? And why pay £7ish for a SD download when SD DVD’s cost about that much and they come with a case and extras?
The picture may be HD but what about the sound - I want true digital surround sound tracks not just a good picture! Same reason why I never pay for films off V+/Sky+
Also, will SD downloads upscale in the same way the PS3 upscales DVD’s?
To be honest I would much prefer something like MS’s Netflix agreement. I have a LoveFilm account in the UK, and if Sony turned around and said for a modest additional monthly fee you could view LoveFilm’s catalogue of titles from your PS3 as well as getting the discs I’d be interested…
Hopefully they will bring in reasonably priced monthly subscription options when more content is available… I will not pay £3.95 a film for 24 hours viewing (DVD’s aren’t much more than that nowadays) and I certainly won’t pay 99p for a TV episode - why? - Lost = 23 episodes = 23 x 99p = £22.77 = DVD Boxset price when HMV/Play have a sale = rip off!!!
I did no want to say this but…………..Your Right.
Europeans may feel left out, but how about us Canadians - it’s completely insane that Canada can’t even get the video downloads! Stop catering to the Americans.
obviously the reason why we cannot buy HD content is because Sony wants to keep their Blu-ray sales up
Well I’m not saying I’d spend ridiculous amounts of money on video content that either only lasts a few days (i.e the HD content), or is only available in SD, but it would be nice to have the option…. know wot i mean?
i hate that the Americans always have to get things first, they could show some courtesy instead of flaunting it in the faces of people who don’t have it, us British did after all create their country, a little gratitude would be nice….
plus i thought we were now in an age of global markets, why can’t it be a single global release all on the same date?
hi im really dissapointed why cant we get films whats so different about us compared to americans we would also like tvs in ps home
I’m starting to wonder why I waited for the PS3 and didn’t just buy the Xbox 360.
Microsoft have obviously overtaken Sony in the race to be first to launch innovative stuff like this.
I’m slightly regretting recently purchasing a PS3 over the Xbox 360. One of my interests was to use the console as a media hub. With the release of movie downloads for Xbox MS have moved ahead. Until Sony release their version in the UK I guess I’ll have to continue using P2P like the majority of the UK to get my movie downloads.
I completely agree with the previous comments. This is very poor of Sony not to provide this to the UK market.
