My Sony PS3 Crashes A Lot: Hard drive maybe

Sony PS3 crashes a lot
This is some news that has affected myself and also a few other people that I know, lets find out if its just a small number of people or a much wider issue with the Playstation 3.

Since updating to firmware 2.41 from 2.40, my Sony PS3 crashes a lot and this has happened in games like Call of Duty 4 (as reported before). At first I felt this may be an issue with COD4 and the recent firmware, but after hearing from others having crashes with COD4 it may not be the case.

Recently the hard drive needed restoring as the PS3 would not even boot up, as the settings were back up to an external hard drive, this process was painless.

After the problem with the hard drive, we are thinking that this could be an issue with the hard drive being damaged in some way and I have heard of this before.

Has your hard drive ever packed up on your Sony PS3?

The good thing with the Sony PS3 is the hard drive; it’s really easy to just slip another much larger drive in. Many gamers have installed drives of 250GB into their PS3 and receive the benefits of a much larger hard drive.

With the movie download service launching for the PS3, it is time to upgrade our PS3 drives to have all this content stored internally thanks to a larger drive.

Can anyone else report they have had a PS3 hard drive fail, other problems or crashes? And have you upgraded your drive to a larger one?

That truly sucks. I did not receive the 2.40 update but I did perform the 2.41 and am an avid COD4 player. The problem has not affected me which brings me to belive that it may be something on the hard drive related to the update change.

Have you tried formatting the drive now that it has been updated to 2.41?

As for drive replacements, I have played around with the hard drive many time to Install the Ubuntu Linux OS for PS3 however found that the hard drive uses serialization so you can not put the same hard drive back in once another has been initialized.

my ps3 (60G) has been working great across the board. My coworker did just recently have to reformat his HDD. so they are not immune to hard drive trouble it seems. Has me a lil scared but it’s been all green lights for me so far. btw he also has a 60 gig

Well there is no “REAL” problem with the hard drive just the files stored and access on it.

For the same reason you never turn off the system in the middle of a game save, etc. which can corrupt the saved information necessary for the XMB to do what it does so well.

    I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again;
2.41 killed my 80gig ps3 that I got June 18th, the 1rst day it came out!
I missed 2.4 completely as I didn’t have internet at the time and went about getting 2.41, absentmindedly believing sony actually fixed the problems…
only to be greeted with nothiing but “your hard drive is corrupted” every time I’ve turned it on since.
Because of sony’s false promises I lost all my data and playlists not believing it necessary to back-up when they assured problems were fixed.
And annoyingly I still haven’t even received the box to ship it for repair yet and its been a week now, this is the crappiest experience I’ve had from sony and I’ve been with them since ps1, my ps2 is even still running even though it’s broken some 7 times now, but theres not much point using it til my ps3 is fixed since it doesn’t read memory cards anyway!
All this BS over an update that does virtually nothing, my other comments explain my thoughts on custom soundtracks but suffice to say its the only part of 2.4 that was going to be worthwhile for me and its the only part thats virtually unchanged!

If you’re having troubles with the latest firmware update I’ve found a solution!!!

First, you’re going to want to start filling your tub with water. While the tub is filling, go grab an extension cord and a toaster. Plug the extension cord in the closest electrical outlet to your bathroom. Once you have the extension cord plugged in, make sure the other end reaches your bath tub. Now plug in the toaster, turn the toaster on and hop in your tub (you can keep your clothes on). Once you’re in the tub and your toaster is on just drop it in there with you.

Oh yeah, before you do what I’ve outlined above, you should send you PS3 to…

I have a 60GB PS3 that I upgraded the HD to a 320GB HD and soon there after I started to receive a message when I started up the System that said something like “Cannot Find Hardrive” I thought it was the 2.40 update but even after the 2.41 update it continued to happen. So I decided to completely format the HD. Ever since then I haven’t had any problems.

*BEWARE* Completely Reformatting a 320GB HD took a total of 24hrs to do & that wasn’t an estimated time. It started at 23hr 59min 59secs and counted all the way down to 00:00:00

I’m inclined to beleive that its the 2.40/2.41 firmware, the new firmware come out on August 1.
