Its been rumored for a while now that the Xbox 360 may get a Blu-ray drive now that HD-DVD is dead, the short answer from E3 2008 is NO.
Microsoft has confirmed that it has no plan to develop a Blu-ray drive at anytime, that includes an external or internal Blu-ray drive. They have also announced this week that they have a partnership with Netflix for Streaming movies.
The future war for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 now seems to be streaming movies vs. Blu-ray, although Sony is in a position to have the best of both worlds with its movie download service coming this year and also sporting the high definition disc drive.
Netflix will be a major boost to the Xbox 360 and can only be a blow to Blu-ray, but just how much damage can Netflix cause to Blu-ray for those wanting to watch high definition movies?
With Microsoft focusing on digital distribution and Sony pushing Blu-rays, what will end up the favorite for the end user? Do you prefer Blu-ray or streaming movies?

I definitely prefer to have the physical media, as opposed to a digital copy, so I prefer Blu-ray by far. Downloads do not compare at all to the full 1080p detail Blu-ray offers on video. That’s only half the picture though. With downloads you also miss one of the biggest improvements that Blu-ray offers, and that’s 7.1 channel fully uncompressed master quality surround sound. If you have a decent surround system, which you should for movie viewing, then you deserve to hear movies as they were intended to be heard.
Downloads don’t cut it. I guess they’re convenient, but that’s it. Comparing downloads to Blu-ray is like comparing the sound quality of a crappy MP3 to a Super Audio CD. There is no comparison.

I DOUBT THAT SOUNDS THAT MUCH DIFFERFENCE I MEAN MP3 IS COMPRESSES ALOT AND THAT SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD AS CD QUALITY SOUND, BUT SAYING THAT IF YOU HAVE A TOP QUALITY 1080P AND THX SOUND SYSTEM YOU CAN AFFORD THE BEST BUT THE CONVENIENCE OF THE XBOX LIVE SERVICE IS GREAT THEY WILL JUST HAVE TO INCREASE THE LIBARY OF FILMS THEN THEY SHOULD HAVE THE MARKET SOWN UP
hey guys i got a question if you downloaded a blu ray movie via computer and streamd it through you network to the xbox 360 and had it hooked to a hi def tv via hdmi cable would the image being streamed be as good as a blu ray player? the tv is an lg 42lc7d 720 please help
From Netflix FAQs…”Slower connections are comparable to watching a VHS tape, while faster connections can provide DVD-quality playback.”
So you’re not going to get High Definition no matter what you do. Sounds like crap to me.
interesting article, but honestly streaming movies cannot even compare to blu-ray. You cannot get the same picture quality and sound quality with streaming, especially if you have true HD surround sound. You cant even skip chapters, slow motion, etc, the basic functions even the DVD player consists of. Let’s not forget about special features, subtitles, commentaries, and even BD live you get. Plus, like everyone else has mentioned, the space needed for a 1080p movie!
I did have netflix till a week ago, but there library is just not big enough especially after Sony is taking out their first party studious away from them.
It’s not a competition,
