Diablo 3 Petition
We all had an idea of what game was being announced in Paris and it turned out to be Diablo 3, now after everyone has had time to look at the game it seems that many gamers are not happy.

With a Diablo 3 Petition started this week and thousands of signatures to back it, what’s your view on Diablo 3 and the Petition?

The reason so many gamers joined the Petition was because of disappointment that the Diablo fans are feeling, they are not happy with the artistic direction of Diablo III.

The Petition wants to show Blizzard how many fans are unhappy with the current art style of the game, they do not like the Cartoonist art direction, obviously influenced by the Warcraft universe, Diablo isn’t Warcraft.

Fans are looking for an independent and renewed artistic direction, not a recycled art direction taken from the Warcraft world, Diablo never was meant to be as cartoon’ish as Warcraft, they shall have independent and distinct styles, this isn’t.

Let us know how you feel about Diablo 3, do you like its artistic style and have you signed the Diablo 3 Petition in protest?

I personally like the art as its very reminiscent of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 which I’ve enjoyed tremendously. In fact I will as far as saying two of my favourite all-times games.

I would be very disappointed if the Blizzard changed the art to match WoW which I personally find *boring*.

Diablo 3 IMO has retained the look and feel of its predecessors which is really about solo game-play.

I think the originality of the first Diablo was the contrast between gloomy dungeon atmosphere and a peaceful and sad city where the hero was welcomed by happy fellows just after he had crushed legions of minions. This was also due to the small battle area: you only had to go up and down in a dungeon, then come back to the outside, in the city of Tristram, where you couldn’t now exactly if this city was recomforting or worrisome.

In diablo 2, they decided to turn the hero into a world explorer, crushing thousands of demons in every part of Sanctuary, always running, running, running…The environment in cities and combat areas was almost the same. You could find monsters at the gates of the cities. Contrary to its predecessor, diablo 1, you were exploring hell or dungeons but yet it was encouraging, even in hell. And you were killing cartoon monsters.

So this new formula, dungeon/large areas outside, has already brought many changes in diablo 2. If they go on like this, creating even larger battle areas, aesthetic demons, encouraging atmospheres, the game will turn into something else… Between hellish environments and beautiful landscapes… Thats a radical change since diablo 1, where you could feel hell and despair in every aspect of the game.

What they’ve shown looks pretty I guess. It also looks like world of warcraft. While the dated visuals of WoW are ok for a MMO game as old as it is they don’t really hold up for a modern isometric scroller game.

I’d expect a lot more detail and mood than what i’ve seen. Heck even Titan Quest was more detailed than the D3 art i’ve seen so far, and that game is a few years old.

Hopefully Blizzard isn’t planning on downgrading the quality of their art to the lowest common denominator. Or hasn’t brainwashed all their artists into thinking that less is more when it comes to texture design.

Yes, style is important, but can’t you have style and detail? Why does style have to be plain and smooth? Diablo is certainly not a “plain and smooth” game. So the graphics shouldn’t be.

I think the petitioners have a point. It would be a sad day if Blizzard decided to just let Diablo fall into WoWs art shadow instead of building that IP up into something original looking.

I have to agree with Bobby & Andrew, in their demo of Diablo3, I’m not quite excited as I am supposed to be. “Wall of skeleton” - What’s up with that! “Destructive Environments!” - kinda useless for me. “Picturesque Atmosphere!” Hhhhhhhhmmm - Naah! Give me a dark, kinda like a lonely atmosphere in the game!

I wished D3 is like a prequel and Deckard Cain is a playable character! LOL. Coz how could there be diablo3 when his soul stone was destroyed already!! Cloned Diablo?!

I have to admit, the directions that they have with the characters is truly amazing the barbarian is now so cool though i never played as a barbarain before. The witch doctor is okay. But where is my druid and sorcerer?!

I didn’t think anything against the new diablo 3 look but after seeing a few screenshots where people did a side by side comparison, the edited screens did look like what i would want it to be, much grittier looking, like diablo 2 but still with the improved gfx/physics engine.

seriously, i believe that the gameplay is what will keep diablo 3 strong. id be playing diablo 2 right know, but the only thing holding me back are the graphics and the crap resolution support. As long as diablo 3 retains the gameplay of its predecessors, and new graphics which do look good! I will be pre-ordering it the minute it is avaliable.

  8. Jarrell says:

Diablo 3 is going to reinvent the saga. Why do I say this? It’s simple. Diablos concept is a/the hero(s) save the day, light winning over darkness. It has been X years since darkness cast a shade, and there is bound to be some beauty in the way of the ‘graphics’. I mean, come on people, it makes sense. Diablo 3 brings two aspects to the table that the old diablos didn’t have. the first is new designers. If you want dark, and dreary, stop whining and go play HELLGATE: London, made by the ORIGINAL diablo creators. Diablo 3 has new people, extremely similar gameplay, and some kick ass graphics compared to the prequels.

@antondias: How could there be a sequel eh? go watch the teaser movies and the interview with the project leader. there are two evils they DIDN’T kill.

  9. dgoemans says:

Seriously, have these ppl even watched the gameplay trailer????? Diablo 3 is more diablo than diablo 2 was. If they’re complaining about 3D graphics engine and some internet connectivity options, then they need a Pentium 1 233 so they can play Diablo 1 and 2.
I’ve heard so much FUD about diablo 3 from ppl who know nothing about it and havent watched any of the vids. Just look at what is on their site or read some serious reviews, maybe from ppl in the industry.

  10. D3 looks damn awesome, there’s no denying it. But, having played and love the first two Diablo games, I honestly have to say that I agree with the petitioners. When I first watched the video, although it looked impressive, there was something lacking. That something was the haunting, dark, oppressive ‘evil’ feel that the predecessor evoked.

For me, the point at which I decided that I fully agreed with the petitioners was when I compared the game screenshots, to the modified images, which had the ominous and gritty feel I have come to associate with Diablo. I signed the petition, and don’t regret it, despite the many flames I have recieved for it all over the internet.
