SSL iTunes Problem iPhone Update
We are hearing of massive problems in updating the iPhone firmware to iPhone 2.0, users are getting a message that tells them of an SSL error, no secure connection.

Our readers were reporting of connection errors to iTunes which would obviously be because of the overwhelming demand to get the software update, but following O2’s problems because of 13,000 orders a second, you would expect a computer company like Apple to be able to handle this load today.

Users trying to update to iPhone 2.0 are reporting “has been updating, seems to have gone through all the steps successfully, though in iTunes under devices, a window is displayed Accessing iTunes Store for last 10 minutes” and another user said “the iTunes store is timing out when it’s trying to activate the device”.

This is leaving some users in a position where their iPhone has been left like a brick, half installed. The latest problems many people are reporting is along the lines of a secure connection error.

If you want to know how to get through the error, the best advice is to keep trying as you should eventually you get through.

I am similarly stuck in this half-install state, which is a pain in the ass. I put my iPhone into recovery mode manually (turn off, then insert into dock while holding Home button and just keep holding until iTunes starts talking to you) and now it’s downloading the 1.1.4 firmware. Hopefully I’ll get back to 1.1.4 and maybe wait a couple days before upgrading. I fortunately live near an apple store so if I get really f’ed I can go complain and hopefully get a replacement. This is really rather upsetting. Sure I’m a legacy user, but I paid $400 for this thing and haven’t done anything wrong and here we are…

I am also experiencing this error. Here is the quickest way to keep trying that I have found: Once the error comes up, click OK then click on “Music” on the left and then click on iPhone again and it will automatically try to reconnect.

I am having this problem. And so, when I try to manually restore the phone, iTunes wants to update it with the old software of 1.1.4. Of course, when I try to do that, I get an error message that it couldn’t be updated. Hmmm, maybe because that software doesn’t exist anymore? What is going on?

Here we go again, I’m a first generation Iphone user.. Silly of me to think that this would have gone smoothly.. I should have waited through the weekend before attempting. My Phone is sitting on my Desk looking like the paperweight it has become..

  5. Jerry says:

Mine got thru most of the update and then iTunes displayed a window that says: “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An Unknown error occured (-9838). Please try again later.”
So far, no luck. This has left my iPhone unusable.

    Apple, what have you done!!

I have always had huge respect for Apple, but now that has just halved. Apple must have known there would be tonnes of strain on their servers with a 200MB+ iPhone update, the new iTunes 7.7 update, and millions accessing the all new shiny AppStore. Naughty Apple, how could you not have been prepared. You have the money, you should have tripled your capacity for a month or so. I now have an iPhone which in completely useless until Apple pull their finger out.

    Get it together Apple.

Just keep trying, I just finally got through after nearly an hour, but it’s up and running now.

  9. Bryan says:

    Hello all,
I too, have joined this club. Thanks apple; will this cost half the price tomorrow! Don’t get me wrong, I like to play nasty at times, but two shafts in a row with no healing time, is poor play.

  10. Jenny says:

I agree, you just have to try a couple of times. I went through after 15 minutes of trying. now I am finally syncing iphone. Let’s see how it goes…
