Since Sony PS3 2.41 Firmware: Call of Duty 4 Crashes

PS3 2.41 Firmware
We have all heard about the problems of the Sony PS3 2.40 firmware update and the fact that Sony even pulled this update and went back to just 2.36. Personally I managed to update to 2.40 before they pulled it but as I mostly play Call of Duty 4, I did not see any problems with this firmware release.

Yesterday I updated to firmware 2.41 from 2.40, then after playing Call of Duty 4 for around 10 minutes it crashed when trying to go back to lobby after a game.

This is the first time COD4 has crashed on me and I have clocked up over 150 hours of game time, I thought nothing of it and forced my Playstation 3 to restart by turning the power off.

After another 30 minutes of gameplay, four friends decided to play a private match and on entering that game, COD4 crashed again on me.

Each time the crashes happened the PS3 completely froze, the only way to get access again was to turn the system off and on again.

While I have no way of knowing why these crashes happened, its strange they have happened after updating to firmware 2.41. Has anyone else had any problems with Call of Duty 4 and firmware 2.41 if they updated from 2.40?

I don’t believe this has anything to do with the latest system update, as I’ve experienced a handful of these crashes myself over the last 6 months or so, when playing COD4. However, I did manage to update my PS3 with the 2.4 version & experienced a new problem. On a couple of occassions whilst in the middle of an online game, I would suddenly be taken out of COD4 & back to the PS3 load up screen. I would then have to reload the disc in order to rejoin the action. I haven’t played enough under 2.41 to see if this rectifies the issue.

  2. Nynja on July 9th, 2008 3:14 pm

Nope, no issues. Played for 5 hours straight last night not one problem.

  3. InfectiousLaughter on July 9th, 2008 3:31 pm

Have you tried any other games? I had that issue a few months ago and then when i tried other games some of them didn’t load up at all. After about a week my PS3 wouldn’t read ANY discs and i got an error message with error 80010514. I looked it up on the internet and it turned out to be a “hardware error caused by a corrupted firmware update”. So if you have got that it will be related to something going wrong (like a break in internet connection) while downloading the firmware update, but not specifically with 2.41. I could be completely wrong of course :P

I have never had my sytem crash, but I noticed frequent connection interuptions yesterday after rolling the block point…

  5. r. decline on July 9th, 2008 3:54 pm

wtf? this is being picked up on google news like it is just that, news. this is little more than a forum post asking others if they have had the same issue, but of course the title is suppose to read like its a real problem.
why not just title this “cod4 crashes and i don’t know why”
that is not near as misleading

  6. Chris on July 9th, 2008 4:02 pm

Nope, maybe it’s just you. Maybe you’re a Suxbox 360 fanboy making up this shit. Who’s to tell?

2.41 is working fine for me, and COD4 has been working even better.

  7. Alen on July 9th, 2008 4:29 pm

No issues for me, before or after the update…

  8. NanoGeekTech on July 9th, 2008 5:00 pm

Played COD4 all day Monday…with no issues played a little last night no issues. I have not had any issues with my PS3 since launch day and the only issue I have had with my 360 is a funky DVD tray that would not come out when you hit the eject button.

  9. James on July 9th, 2008 5:51 pm

I too played COD4 yesterday and experienced multiple crashes. This has happened before the 2.41 update. I had the 2.40 and it worked fine. Each time the game would lock up I had to turn off the switch in the back just to get my ps3 to work again. I have a 20G ps3. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

  10. give me a break on July 9th, 2008 6:29 pm

No one else has reported this problem. It could be a problem with your setup, overheating, or an anti Ps3 bias on your part.

Stop acting like this is the end of the world

  11. Alun on July 9th, 2008 7:51 pm

I have had problems with COD4 since the 2.41 update, the game loads ok you can get in to the create a class sections ok. But when you try to find a game type it just keeps saying downloading over and over again!!

  12. alfiejr on July 9th, 2008 9:03 pm

folks, when reporting your own experience, please note which model you are using. like US 4oG or whatever. they are not all the same inside, hardware and software, so very possibly that matters.

and of course it would really help to know if these problems occur with other games too.

Notice that you’re the only lame to post a so called “story” about it. I’ve come to notice that, people who constantly complain about PS3 (crashes, bugs, rumble, games) almost speak identical words. It’s sounds like Microsoft hired some cock suckers to publicly defame the PS3.

You know you assholes can get sued for that right? Don’t make claims unless you have hard prove evidence you FUCK!!!

You can delete my comments, but the fact is that you it’s true. Deleting my comments just shows how much of a true coward you are! AUTHOR! If what I said isn’t true, then why would you delete my comments then??? Hmmm, someone’s feeling guilty :)

  16. The Future of Sega on July 10th, 2008 12:09 am

I meant to say “but the fact is that you “know” it’s true”

  17. The Future of Sega on July 10th, 2008 12:17 am

Ironic how “James” and the author state “I had to turn my PS3 off right when it crashed…..”. Kind of strange how TWO different individuals state the SAME thing, and the same METHOD.

Why didn’t you two try to EJECT the game first, then turn off the system. Since COD4 is a very good game, I would assume that you two would care about it enough, if you are true Sony fans.

Who in their right mind would leave a good game like Call of Duty 4 in a defected system without ejecting the game first so it won’t get messed up?????

……I have a odd feeling that you two work for Microsoft……..

The Future of Sega you seem to be getting very paranoid about a simple post, you need to get a woman in your life and stop your bitching, everybody has a right to ask a question, if you dont like it then go take a long run of a very short pier and do eveybody a favour.

I’ve had no issues with CoD4 in either FW v. 2.36, 2.40 or 2.41. As a matter of fact, it seems that the 2.41 FW, has improved stability with the in-game XMB. The FW 2.40’s in-game XMB would react really slow and sort of freeze (for about up to 30 seconds or so) when accessing it during games.

The only issue I have with CoD4 lately is the freaking lag that gets so bad, it’s like I’m play CoD4: Stop-Motion War. From what I understand it’s caused by using shared servers and from pathetic idiots using “lag switches” to gain the advantage in multiplayer games.

All my other games have been working great under FW 2.41. Also, am I the only one stoked about the in-game XMB while using Folding@home?

Also, I never use the switch in the back to turn off the system. That’s a great way to corrupt your PS3 Blu-ray drive’s firmware. I prefer just to hold the power I/O for ten seconds until the PS3 turns off. You know, like you could do for most PC’s for over a decade.

I have my PS3 set so that game disks are NOT auto-started. I prefer to manually load a game up. If your game media is scratched or something, having it load the disk automatically is just asking it to get stuck in some sort of loop. Not that my disks are scratched but being a long-time computer user, old habits die hard.

  20. nerull on July 11th, 2008 6:51 pm

2.41 killed my ps3. I’m serious, and seriously pissed. I missed the 2.4 that was known to brick systems and ended up getting bricked by the “fix”.
I played for a few hours after updating and then it froze next time I played. When I restarted it I was greeted with “your hard drive is corrupted.”
Worst part is I didn’t even get a chance to back up my saves let alone all the music and playlists I had on my hard drive. Damn you sony!

  21. enar on July 11th, 2008 11:52 pm

Every time Sony releases a new firmware version ’something’ goes wrong, ie, system not recognizing Sixaxis, 720p titles downscaling to 480i, stuttering video streaming, machines bricking, COD crashing. They should be releasing new firmware to hard core gamers prior to dropping buggy software on an unsuspecting audience.

  22. Josh on July 12th, 2008 12:40 am

My Playstation 3 is an 80G and it to has had the same problems with COD4 and Guitar Hero. Update 2.40 worked great and once I got 2.41 it crashes on both games. Playstation 3 needs to send out another update fixing these problems!

  23. The Future of Sega on July 12th, 2008 2:36 am

Well maybe you guys are right. I am one of the few who was lucky to download 2.40 when it first came out. But yesterday, when I switched my 2nd dual shock 3 controller on, and I tried to reassign the controller numbers, both of them read “controller port 1″. And then the first controller became non responsive.

It was amusing at first, but then I got pissed. So, like you guys, I turned off my system. The 2nd controller turned off properly, but the 1st controller was still on!!!!

And I switched the power button of my PS3 to OFF!!! But after 20 seconds, the bastard started acting right :) So everything, is ok now.

But I swear, if one more bad thing happens from Sony on the PS3, I will never buy another Sony video game console FOREVER!!!!! Shitty ports like The Orange Box, a year’s delayance of rumble, horrible first party games, no in game xmb until now, constant delaying of games that turn out to be absolute shit *cough Haze, Lair cough*

So if Sony fucks up ONE MORE TIME, I’m through with the Sony industry! You guys can suck Sony’s cock as long as you want, but I’ll be moving onto better, less stressful systems….erm Sega baby! The best video game company of all time!!!

  24. Demset on July 31st, 2008 7:32 pm

Yea i have also had those same problems, My PS3 mainly freezes on “Ambush” on Modern Warfare, but i just Turn the System off and then on again… it doesnt bother me, but What the F>>> Playstation

  25. tim on August 3rd, 2008 3:16 am

i’ve been having similar problems since the new system update has been released. i just gt my console back f rom sony after the laser diode failed and couldnt read discs anymore. now when i hit the ps button on the controller during any game it freezes up and goes into a darker like screen. the only way to bypass it was to force shut down on the console. sony really knows how to treat their customers. playstation has been nothing but trouble since i got it. i wish i bought an xbox.

  26. Pissed at Sony on August 5th, 2008 1:08 am

I bought the 80 gig in January.
Played it a few hours and work got in the way
    May bought COD4
Played it once halfway thru the mission PS3 locks up wont recognize any disks
July search internet for what to do
Call sony and get return the machine
    Today refurbished machine arrives 08/05/08
Machine has scratches on it and some of the finish is rubbed away.
Put in COD4 5 mins into game it locks up
    Call Sony
Sorry it happened sounds like it didnt get fixed.
So they are sending another box so they can try to fix it.

So after 10 hours of gameplay I now have a broken machine whose face is all scratched up and marred. Sony is going to be kind enough to try and fix it again, I wonder what type of machine I will get this time.

There needs to be a class action lawsuit against Sony for selling lemons to the public. I paid 450 for a machine that does not work, and they sent me a beat up piece of crap as a replacement.

I cant wait to see what I get next. Maybe this time they will send me a Wii.

  27. nerull on August 5th, 2008 3:59 pm

Ya that’s perhaps the worst part of this BS, my ps3 was less than a month old with barely any playtime. After over 2 weeks since I first phoned to have the box sent I get one with a big scratch on the front, a less crisp controller, which is god knows how old. I payed for new product and because of their complete lack of testing I get dumped down to a refurb that isn’t even mine. And on top of that I still don’t even know if the bastards managed to fix it since they didn’t feel like sending me my controller cable so I can’t get farther than the synchronize screen! Hopefully it’ll get here by Friday and I’ll be able to start my 4th week of play after nearly 2 months!
If it wasn’t for god of war III, free online (that I have yet to and will rarely use), and the fact that I spent a bundle on a bunch of games of barely got to play that I won’t get close to half for if I trade in, I’d do just that and switch to xbox after being with sony since the ps1. Meanwhile my 2 friends with 360s havn’t had a single problem with their 360s and they’ve had rumble and ingame soundtrack since launch.
Sony, not only have you dropped the ball, you dropped it in a sespool and told us it’s a chocolate river.

  28. Justin on August 8th, 2008 4:24 am

I too had cod 4 crash on the 2.41 firmware. I tryed getting online last night and it frozed up on me so I had to restart my ps3. The last time that happend to me my blue ray light went out and had to have sony fix the problem so im not gonna play my cod 4 no more :’(

  29. Barry Cleeton on August 8th, 2008 1:00 pm

Thank god for the google search engine!!! Glad I am not the only one having problems. My PS3 has had no problems until 2.41 but the last few nights my COD4 has froze totally while playing online. This would not bother me so much if you could then get back online without having to wait for 30 odd minutes at a time for the downloading game settings screen to get back in. Come on Sony are updates not meant to improve our gaming experience not make it worse???????

  30. kevin on August 9th, 2008 11:44 pm

yea just last night i was not even able to load ANY maps whether it be during just split screen or online it freezes and when i go online downloading game settings doesn’t disappear! WTF this is my third ps3 it better not eff up!

  31. iks247 on August 12th, 2008 7:30 pm

since 2.41 i click multiplayer then then that works when i try to join a match it freezes on Downloading Game Setting … sometimes it takes an hour to load sometimes 2 some 5mins etc. does anybody know y?

  32. Greg on August 18th, 2008 6:54 am

Todays the 18th and for about the past 10 days or so Ive had difficulties using my PS3 80gb playing COD4 online. Ok heres the scenerio, first I choose multiplayer, no problem switches to next screen. I select play online, no problem switches quick to next screen. I select find game, now here is the problem, it can take upwards of 15-20 minutes for the playlists to download. Has anyone else been having this issue.

I also just recently swithched to Verizon Fios , going wireless on wired directly to router is the same issue.

    Help

  33. kevin on August 18th, 2008 4:12 pm

well greg the same thing happenened to me except mine never loaded at all! so what i did was i turned of the router and the internet itself. left it off for a little then after i turned it back on i completely re-did all of the playstation network settingsbut did it manually this time around. cod4 worked immedialty after that… not sure if that helps but it worth a shot…

  34. Greg on August 20th, 2008 4:53 am

Thanks Kev, but that doesnt seem to have worked. I moved my router which is on a verizon Fios 5 -2 service closer to the fios panel, now I can get to the playlists quick, but once in a game it lags pretty bad, for instance in crossfire using a G36 my gun sounds interupted and Ive been getting killed much more frequently than before. I did a speed test and it came back with these results, download ranged from 46 kbps to 1305 and upload ranged from 909 to 1801kbps…Does that seem way to low a number and do you think I should increase my router speed to 10000 kbps for download and 10000 kbps for upload. Im not sure what my speed was with comcast, but I never had a problem with the game.

I also tried going into the router and changing ports and so forth to no avail, feel free to email me at greglad007@yahoo.com with any suggestions

    Help

  35. omz45 on August 29th, 2008 1:06 pm

Hi Guys, I never go to forums so i’m totally new to this whole thing.
I bought a brand new 80gb ps3 and cod4 one week ago. I have been waiting for about a month. Was really excited about it as my brother in laws each had one (i was the slow one). The had 40gb’s and I had a 80gb :o) So if any1 wanted it to work it was me. I had to download the software update and to be honest with you I dont know which one it is, must be the 2.4.1. When I click on the ‘Play online’ button it comes up ‘Downloding game settings’ and probably 1 out of every 5 times I play online that comes up, its goes on and on for about 15 minutes at least. When I know there its not going to load I can press the ps button and go to the menu and quit th game.
I put that down to a possible connection problem (yeah right) but I was making excuses.
When I go to split screen to play with some1, I can choose the map and rules but when i press start game, 1 out of every5 or 6 times the loading bar will scroll to one point (about 25% and 90% are the usual distance) and then the system will be totally unresponsive. You could press whatever you wanted on the controller…no avail, no matter how long you wait, nothing will be displayed. There is something wrong here…does anyone else have this problem?
I can take the disc out, I dont know why I did because the screen stays the same, the only thing you can do is press the front power button to turn it off (i dont know how to restart it yet). You could turn it off and turn it back on again and it could be totally fine.
The problem I have is really like the console/game/graphics, everything about it but I’m stressed when this hapens to a brand new system 1 week old.

PLz let me know your thoughts, shall I return it if possible but then what? wait for them to fix it?
