Confirmed iPhone 3G upgrade
Earlier today I visited both my local O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores and was told from O2 that iPhone owners will not be able to upgrade on Friday and Carphone Warehouse said they did not know but thought it had to be done online or through customer services.

We heard that other O2 stores were able to upgrade existing Apple iPhone owners, so we spent time at length talking to Carphone Warehouse customer services a few moments ago and they confirmed you will be able to upgrade in store on Friday.

Although the person at Carphone Warehouse customer services said that there will be a charge for upgrading to the new iPhone 3G (this is a fee for ending the contract), that’s where it gets interesting.

It’s interesting because after ringing the O2 customer services they said that there will be no charge for upgrading and they also confirmed the ability to upgrade in store on Friday. You will have to pay for the phone if you do not go on a contract that gives a free iPhone 3G.

If your looking at getting an iPhone 3G on Friday be aware that each store will only have a few handsets and the demand will be high. The upgrade charge issue that Carphone Warehouse mentioned is a little weird, so I will be visiting an O2 store.

The charge is in regards to people on non-iphone tariffs. I can see why people advising on the info handed out in training re the 3g iphone could be misunderstood. People on iphone tariffs are able to upgrade for free, but they will have to pay for the handset if they go on a tariff lower than £45/m. You just agree to a new 18 month contract and therefore o2 ensure you are their customer for at least the next 18 months, hence no cessation fee (upgrade/end contract fee) for existing iphone customers. Hope this helps.

I just visited my local CPW store, to be told that “they weren’t opening until 7.02 PM” … and that I couldn’t upgrade in store.

The sales guy then went on to say that “just pop in tomorrow at some point before 3pm and I will have more detail for you.”

hmm, needless to say I may be avoiding that store tomorrow as it sounds like it’ll end in turmoil.

7.02am? - every store (unless london ones maybe) is open from earliest 8.02am…

Stores holding large quantities of stock, i.e. big/main stores will be open from 8.02am and other smaller stores will be open as usual.

Existing o2 direct 2G iPhone customers can upgrade to the new 3G iPhone for free through any CPW sales channel.

o2 CPW customers in contract would pay cessation fee, out of contract will not need to pay anything bar the normal iphone prices.

    Hope this helps.

cheers sam - that’s what i figured. He said “7pm” .. as in, in the evening - he clearly had no idea what he was talking about. (he seemed somewhat clueless, and also a douchebag!! lol)

I will call them again before they close and try and speak to a manager or some such.

i have never had good service at CPW, maybe I am just unlucky.

Hey no problem, unfortunately every company seems to have the odd one or two less knowledgable people should i say.

If you have issues getting through to the store through the IVR just ring customer services on 0870 0870 168 and get transferred through (its quicker sometimes). I would give you the free phone number from your mobile but the switchboard clocks off at 6.30pm.

Its a shame to hear you’ve never really had good service from CPW, i’m hoping it hasnt been too bad and i’d offer to help you out more if i was at work. Anyway, good luck and have fun with the new phone - it’s mighty good (sneaky peaks are a bonus of working for the company)
