Sony PS3 2.40 Firmware disaster

Sony have now confirmed that they have pulled PS3 2.40 Firmware Update, it seems that this most recent update did not live up to its promise, in fact we can safely say that it was a bit of a disaster. We first learned of the trouble from the guys over at PS3 Daily, when they had been contacted by a few of their friends saying that they had tried to download the new Sony PS3 2.40 firmware update, only to learn that it was not there anymore.
Sony has since commented on this, saying that they had pulled the latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3; this was the result of many customers reporting that the new update had caused their system to stop working. Firmware update 2.40 was only released on Tuesday, and it was not long before the problems started for many and they posted their trouble on the official PS3 message board.
My brother has Metal Gear Solid 4, he decided to have a game last night, only to be met with a blank screen, even his demos have a blank screen. A spokesperson for Sony has said that they had pulled the latest update of their servers while they investigate the problem; this is why we now have to stick with 2.36 just for now. Sony said “We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
For those of you who did not manage to download Firmware Update 2.40, do not worry too much as the update was a little short of a few of its promises. So were you one of those who had troubles with firmware 2.40, if so please let us know what problems you experienced.

I download this before 7am yesterday. The only issue I had was downloaded an update for Motorstorm, it froze. I had to delete the Motorstorm update data before I could play it as everytime I tried to start the game it jumped back to the system menu.
Other than that, Warhawk was fine as was Pain (with all the damn updates I had to do). I’ll try others tonight.
Dl’d on my PS3 and everything (at the moment) is working as normal. Only issue i found is when a friend sent a message i clicked on his icon and it brings up the trophy’s, and message window but no way, that i could see, to read the message… Instead i had to go to received messages and read it that way. If i’m missing something there then please let me know..

No , read the press release. They say a small number, not ‘many’. The actual numbers affected seem very small, this has been blown out of al proportion.
Sensationalism. Example. “The cheap tabloids relied on sensationalism to increase their circulation.”
Firmware “Pulled”
“Disaster”
“Many”
“did not live up to its promise”
“do not worry too much as the update was a little short of a few of its promises”
“So were you one of those who had troubles with firmware 2.40, if so please let us know what problems you experienced”
All of these comments told me everything I need to know about the “journalist” that wrote them.
Seems like more than a small number to me, I was one of the affected ones, downloaded it and it went to install, got to about 55% and the machine restarted, except it didn’t. It hung on a screen with the wavy line, no icons and the pad wouldn’t work.
I have a 60gig PS3 and I installed the update and have not had any problems.

You can access the message by going to the person who sent it to you, hitting the triangle button and selecting message list. I had the same problem when I first tried to view my message.

Well this sensational crap article has done it’s job and gotten me to not only read it but post.
According to various internet polls, the 2.40 “bricking” rate is well below 5%. While still an unacceptable fraction of consoles, this is far from the catastrophic doom and gloom of this article and far less than the 360’s failure rate.
I’m just wondering. I have heard this deleting files thing quite a few times and I only hear it with the PS3 with this situation and others in the past. (example GTA 4 So I’m wondering is it because of the Hard Drives installed in the PS3’s
