Hands on with firmware update 2.40 for Sony PlayStation 3

Well I have just downloaded the new firmware update 2.40 for the Sony PlayStation 3, and I thought I would talk about it a little. The friend’s category has been redesigned and has now been upped to support 100; however it is not that feature that people want to know about, it is the “Trophies” feature

The long awaited “Trophy” feature has now been added, depending if the game supports this feature you can now “Collect Trophies” for that game. If you wish to see your friend’s trophies, go to their profile and to view your own go to “Game” the “Trophy Collection”.

In game chat has been given a major boost, by being able to exchange messages with friends and family during gameplay. This is achieved by pressing the “PS” button and using the functions from the “XMB” (XrossMediaBar), you can also search the Internet from the XMB screen.

After trying the keyword search from the network menu, we found it much quicker. We did find searching a little slow, but that could have just been down to our Internet running a little slow at the time. Sadly trying to view game trailers from gametrailers.com you need to upgrade your Flash Player, if our readers have any tips on this then please let us know in the comments section below.

To sum up, the trophy section is really exciting but not many games support this, and as most of my time is spent on Call of Duty 4 I feel a little left out. However; with Call of Duty 5 coming later this year we are sure to get “Trophy Support”, if you like WWII games that is. For a full list of games that support the trophy feature, visit our recent post here.

I agree with Rodney… The PS3 is sadly lacking a “real” web browser and Opera would fit the bill quite nicely….. !
