Sony Playstation 3 Network (PSN) Offline: PS3 users unhappy

June 24, 2008 | Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

Sony Playstation 3 Network
We all know there has to be updates and when its not possible to keep everything online we have to have downtime, but when gamers in the UK come home from work or school today and want to play games on their Sony Playstation 3, its not going to happen. They will be given the message, use of the Playstation Network has been suspended and to new people that means an update.

In this case the PSN is getting a big update, well in time scare that is, thanks to being offline from 15:00 BST to 20:10 BST. You will have no access to the Playstation store on your Sony PS3, and more upsetting is the result of no online gaming over PSN.

What I cannot understand as a PS3 owner and also other people I know have mentioned the same, is why are they updating in the busy time of gaming when they could of done this update in the middle of the night or early hours when the UK is sleeping.

I am happy that the PSN is getting an update, and even happier if this includes some really cool extra features that could be heading to a PS3 2.40 firmware and maybe even stability for Home. Just trying to work out why the PSN in the UK could not be taken offline when the UK is sleeping.

Unless this is an update to the PSN around the whole world, now that is very unlikely. When we get to around 20:10 BST you should be able to sign in and use the Playstation Network as normal, we will update you on any changes we see (if any).

Do you think the time of this PSN downtime could have been planned better?

  4. NeonSkull on June 24th, 2008 8:51 pm

Its not the end of the world, and by ps3 owners do you mean “yourself”. Sony let people know about the downtime before it happened. 5 hours aint that long.

  9. Scarface3010 on June 24th, 2008 9:27 pm

Get a life. This downtime isn’t the end of the world. Go outside and breath in some fresh air. I for one am not unhappy about this, it just means that SONY is making things better for us.

  10. Manuel on June 24th, 2008 9:29 pm

Why should we be sad? when we should be happy, that means sony is at least checking or adding new stuff to the playstation network, and PS3 gamers should be excited about the update 2.40 it should be a great comeback to xbox 360 Live Blade.

  11. Microsoft on June 24th, 2008 9:32 pm

Sony never delivers… Our Xbox Live service is always 24/7 and we provide the greatest satisfaction to our subscribers with great quality.

  12. kenny on June 24th, 2008 9:35 pm

who cares about when they do the update, were getting the holy grail of ps3 apps.(next to home maybe)this puts ps3 owners at the same level of online gaming as the suck box.so stop bitchin.

Plus, the time frame is during normal working hours in the US. Afternoon in Europe and Early morning in Japan. The main people complainin are those is Europe.

I am ok because it will be back up and running when I get home from work.

  14. TheWretched on June 24th, 2008 9:40 pm

The UK is not the freaking end of the world… ALL servers, worldwide, are down… And guess what… it’s nighttime in Japan and Morning in the US

And… for f*cks sake, you still can play your freaking games, just not online.

And “users” unhappy… I couldn’t care less. Working people don’t play in the afternoon…

  15. TX3 on June 24th, 2008 9:41 pm

It’s happening everywhere actually Sony is a Japanese company. So the down time is during sleeping hours in Japan (Wed. 05:40 hours) and here (Canada, Toronto) 16:00 hours.

  16. lee on June 24th, 2008 9:42 pm

Mate you are one hell of an idiot, they havent purposely given us british a downtime in peak playing hours, theyve done it to suit their mass market, the USA. and like neonskull said, its only 5 hours, don’t you have anything else to do other than play on PSN or write this pathetic article.

  17. Darrell on June 24th, 2008 9:47 pm

Actually, it is worldwide. We are having downtime right now here in the US, but it should be over in 15 minutes at 14:00 PST for an update that started at 8:00 PST. I just found out while typing this that 8:00 PST to 14:00 PST is 16:00 BST to 23:00 BST

  18. OMEN on June 24th, 2008 10:05 pm

at least sony is fixing the problem,if we were xbox users we would have to buy another xbox or pay them to fix it.

  19. John on June 24th, 2008 10:28 pm

    @ the Author

Are you retarded? This update time choice is excellent. The console market doesn’t exactly revolve around the UK you know. This update schedule works perfectly for the US market and Japan market which combined outstrip the UK market. It may be during your after school hours, but its during US working hours and Japan’s twilight hours.

get a life ppl there is nothing to be unhappy about. its common to have servers going down for maintenance and also its common to have a long one like what we have now once awhile. this article is going no where as well as all the so called “angry” gamers. get a grip please for goodness sake. cant play online just play some single player games first. i dont see one can die for not playing online for a day and you ppl make it sounds like tomorrow is the end of the world. not to forget psn is free. you should be glad that playing on a free server yet sony is bother to do all these maintenance to keep things running smooth and good for us. learn to be appreciative rather than bitching all the time. every ppl living in different part of the world are on a different time zone. there is no way you can make a time that cater to everyone out there. more over this maintenance its not only occurring in UK. its basically globally. the entire psn is basically down for a long maintenance. this is no big deal and whats the fuss to brag about. stop making yourself look stupid especially to those xbots.

  21. Royzy on June 24th, 2008 11:05 pm

I much prefer it during the day when I’m at work - I’m playing all through the night!

Makes most sense to me to do it in the morning.

  22. Sean on June 24th, 2008 11:11 pm

Its a global update that’s why, as usual we get the short end of the stick.

  23. Tony on June 25th, 2008 12:30 am

The update is worldwide you numbskull. Just a few seconds research would have told you that. Sony released a statement yesterday stating that this would be happening today so grow up and stop complaining. You sound pathetic.

  24. TheNiceneCreed on June 25th, 2008 12:41 am

    You sir, are a hack.

  25. IHateYouAll on June 25th, 2008 12:47 am

    Tony,

    You said it all, mate.

  26. Axe99 on June 25th, 2008 12:59 am

Aye, it’s a worldwide network, and it’s gotta happen at some stage. It sounds a bit ADD that people are unhappy that the network’s been down for 5 hours in the last who knows how many months. Especially as the PS3 has a ton of brilliant offline games - it’s not as if the thing is rendered meaningless. Play a COD4 story set-piece or a little Uncharted or R&C.

  27. westzida22 on June 25th, 2008 2:18 am

you know sometimes you also have to think, that some of these people that work hard to give us these updates are also parents, like myself and wish to be home to see their kids after a day of hard work….all we have to do is wait a few hours….it wont kill you to be patient. FTW!

  28. CrZYADD on June 25th, 2008 4:23 am

lawl if X box live had mantience, then every 360 owner would get RROD LOLOLOLOL

  29. @Microsoft on June 25th, 2008 9:09 am
Sony never delivers… Our Xbox Live service is always 24/7 and we provide the greatest satisfaction to our subscribers with great quality
Oh you mean like Microsoft delivered at Christmas when Live was barely unplayable for about 6 weeks?

  30. @Microsoft on June 25th, 2008 9:10 am

I mean it wasnt playable and we all got a poxy free game of Undertow, one months live wouldve been better

  31. Mark on June 25th, 2008 9:50 am

Given the choice, planned PSN preventative maintanence, or 2 weeks of downtime over Xbox live Xbox Live, I will take the PSN option any day thank you…

PSN has been uber reliable to date, for coming upto 2 years, no unscheduled downtime at all, from my memory 2x 12hr secheduled upgrade slots.

That’s awesome track record IMHO, and this blog is pretty pathetic to try and attack that as a negative..

  32. Korgoth on June 25th, 2008 10:30 am

This article is completely pointless. PSN was down for 5 hours, with plenty of warning. Get over it. Honestly, have you really got nothing to do in your life unless your Playstation 3 can get online?

  33. Glenn on June 25th, 2008 12:50 pm
Sony never delivers… Our Xbox Live service is always 24/7 and we provide the greatest satisfaction to our subscribers with great quality
- - This would be because you have to pay for your servers and downtime costs them money.
I for one will be going outside and sampling the joys of sunshine etc for a while, it is not the greatest time to be offline but it is not the end of the world surely? I use and run a company on Second Life and that software is always going down peak times in the UK but you have to also realise this is best for the US crews to work on the software. It is never the end of the world its simply just an excuse to go live a little!
Cheer up guys at least the writer of this article know people are reading it and its hitting a nerve lol!
Have a good day guys and remember its only a game lol

  34. Danielle on June 25th, 2008 2:44 pm

You should send sony your schedule, so they can plan around it. GG.

  35. ZeroYel on June 25th, 2008 5:03 pm

    @microsoft

They deliver when you pay and keep paying and when your system craps out on you and you have to send it off for about a month or two if your lucky . Also that the system does put a ring on your disc making the game wrothless the than deliver on great service There are no 3 red rings on a PS3 .
