Call of Duty 5 World at War release date confirmed for fall: December 31, 2008

im a little disappointed as this a ww2 game it means that it will be very limited game play and weopanry. It also means the story line will be similar to a million other games and will nowhere near be as good as the fourth

You obviously have not played the whole Cod series, or if you have then never appreciated it. CoD 2 was on of the most revolutionary FPS games to come out on console and PC, the engine was completely different from the first CoD and I would argue that its playability rivaled that of CoD 4. Yes, there are cool new weapons in CoD4, but this is WWII. They didn’t have red dot sights on their 8 shot Garands or the ability to call in an assault helicopter. You feel a sort of nostalgia about this game if you were a lover since the beginning, I admit I even felt dirty about playing a modern CoD game when I first bought Modern Warfare.

Was rather hoping the title would have been COD Future Warfare , Ill give it a go all the same.

i have played number one and two and didnt think they were as good as number four. i mean ww2 has had a million different games based around it so to me its pretty out dated as a games bases now…

first off… would u rather shoot a fully auto .30-06 BAR or a measly 5.56 M4? hah in WW 2 pretty much every weapon used was a sniper rifle…. not a spray and pray weapon. K98, Mosin Nagant, M1 Garand again another semi auto .30-06 were all pretty much sniper rifles, but if ur not a gun person then this game probably wont be for you, other than that, they could have a totally different story line for this Call of Duty, if u thought COD 4 was good, wait till you try this, know how awesome COD 4 is i know they will make this game better, otherwise what would be the point?

I agree with you too. The modern weapons are just more fun, and to many games are about WWII. I was really hoping we would get another modern or future game.

i dont think we have enough information about the game just yet to judge whether to buy or not. its easy to see that this game will be both loved and hated. but if your like me and on the fence we still need more facts about the game. too early to judge

I agree with ‘Goose’, If the COD brand was to explore all regions of gameplay, weapons, tactics,stealth, Allies and Foes etc they could do with exploring different wars that have taken place in the modern era. As its been mentioned in a few previous comments everyone is tired of WWII games, now I am new to COD and have always been in to MOH games which are mainly based around WWII history. And Ive had no major problems with that style gameplay or weaponry used, but playing COD4 was a big turnaround for me and I believe the best way for them to go would be staying modern as they have covered WWII in the last 3 games, so Ive heard? And also Infinity Ward are not involved in this game which apparently is not a good thing. After all the pointless rambling ive just wrote as I got nowt to do at work I say to hell with it and ‘Lets do dis!!’

Im actually quite pissed off about this,i didn’t mind Cod1 and 2 because they we’re the best at the time..Cod4 sold really well.. got the best rating and made all the consoles..going back to WW2 seems a bit of a downer..i think as some others maybe a vietnam one? Jungle fighting,Helictopers that fire rockets and machine guns,planes that drop Napalm? i think they’re running out of ideas so “hey lets make another ww2 game” i admit that its the first WW2 game i’ve heard about that involves the pacific..i mean yeah battlefield and MOH but not alot of games are the pacific theatre.. maybe this game could be good,maybe bad

John is absolutely right… The complete difference between CoD 4 and the others turned me off to even play the game. I’m glad they went back to WW2, that is obviously what they do best… As a PC gamer for years, i have been playing the series since the first week it came out, and am looking forward to this release on the PC
Jesse has a point too– those gay ass new weapons, helicopter attacks, whatever that was in cod4 ruins the game every once in a while.
I would like to see activision do something else next time though where the shooting genre is weak: vietnam, korea, hell i’d settle for even WWI or a fictional cold war vs russia! the ww2 story does get repetitive, but the way the trailer looks they are sticking the the pacific theater, which is rarely ever done in a WWII game.

I played call of duty 2 on the pc and hated it. When cod 4 came out i wasnt going to buy it but a friend convinced me too, and it is the best game i now own. I like everything about the game..Why the hell would any game franchise take a step backwards, it makes no sense

I think its great they chose this era but feel it should have been brought out before modern warfare, cod 4 is great but helis and airstrikes jeez , half the time you cant get your heli off so you cant get another airstrike MAJOR FLAW.

Just watched the trailer and it looks awsome. Can’t wait to flame thrower the fuck out of everything. I agree that it seems like a backward step to make another WW2 game but as long as it provides new challenges and improvements to the game play who cares. I’m sure it will be another hit.

WW2 will result in less airstrike type attacks and more intimate combat which is really what makes these games what they are……the real question is are you a martyr and a final stand?
Plus although maybe not all fully automatic or futuristic there will be a wide selection weapons..flamethrower!!

Well I gotta say I’m looking forward to it…CoD united offensive was one of my favorite games….I really like modern warfare games but at times i get really sick of the noob tube. frag whoring, and air strikes. I like a challenge in a game and using a weapon that doesn’t have red dot sights or Acogs, just plain old iron sights, is a challenge…Agree or disagree people will buy it and i’m sure it will be just as great as the others.

Jamie, everyone here is doing exactly what this forum is about, giving our thoughts and opinions on what we think about the new edition of Cod5 coming out. People are passionate about this kinda stuff, if you don’t like the opinions then don’t read them; everyone is just speaking their mind. As much as I would have preferred a Vietnam edition and am a little disappointed that this will be going back to WWII I’m sure I will still very much enjoy the game, as I’m sure most everyone else will that has bitched or complained about it.

i cant wait for this game!!!!! i love ww2 weoponry because it requires a lot of skill, if you dont like them… it coz your a noob. i cant belive though that there arnt gong to be british in the game i mean, sure the yanks did help out but the british and russians were the true winners. the britsh were in the war in 1939, but america and russa did not join for anouther 2 years. im not trying to take anything away from the americans but the british definatly did a lot a lot more in ww1 and also more in ww2.

i think the game creators have shot themselves in the foot going back to ww2. i for one wont be buying the new installment, its just that im past the crappy vintage weapons, i bet there wont be as varied range of different weapons a sin cod4, instead youll be stuck with the m4 and the grease gun, trying to lure people into this game with the prospect of using a flame thrower just shows how much imagination they havnt put into this game. while a future based game with lazers would have been too tacky, i think they should have stuck with the modern concept maybe with some more vehicle based missions. to be honest id just be happy with some more maps for the online play and maybe some more weapons and perks…….

just wanted to say that I like the idea of going back to WWII as I liked COD3 online but felt it was lacking, in COD4 they nailed it and it’s excellent. I am hoping the online engine is the same as COD4 whereby you rank up using experience points, if this happens the game will be every bit as good as COD4. One thing I will say is the reason there are not many vietnam based games like this are coz the sales in the US are always much lower due to the controversy about the actual war, many americans still feel very strongly about it and those games just do not sell.
I am eagerly anticipating the release of COD5.
P.S I doubt there’s many germans in this coz its in the pacific, but you will get kamikaze japanese which will be fun!!

i am also dissapionted about the british not being in it because the british had been fighting in japan as well and did very well againsed the germans in north afrika but i do hope that the brits will be in cod6 but other than that i think cod5 will be sick.

I don’t agree about the Vietnam era games, though I personally haven’t done any research or polling to prove my point. I know I sure enjoy the theater of war from that era and some very cool weapons and vehicles would be available. Think of it; crawling in tunnels, jungle warfare, tiger traps, river boats, etc. Again I think it would be a good one, maybe that’s on their list of future COD games to release.

call of duty 4 opened my mind so much. i had never played a one person shooter b4 and was skeptical. once i got it i played 147 hours within 2 months. that is almost an entire week in front of the t.v. i have a ps3 and it changed my life. sad to see they are not staying modern.

Ok, where did you see that you can climb trees? I have to admit it’s stupid sh*t like that that will make me enjoy this game that much better. I will also mention that although I love COD4 to death, I’m growing ever so tired of it. Activision needs to realize that people play these games so much that they really need to release more new map packs regularly to keep these games fresh. I’m now eagerly awaiting the new COD5 game just so I can play something fresh and something without air strikes and helicopter attacks ever minute.

What can I say that hasn’t been said already…WWII?!?! been there, done that!!! Everyone talks about the history and epic battles and a historic war….Whatever!! IF I want to learn about WWII I’ll read a history book. Don’t get me wrong I will buy COD 5 and give it a fair chance but it seems like COD 4 opened such a big door with modern warfare I don’t know why Treyarch was so quick to close it. I.M.O. they could of taken what they liked about the WWII and implented into a modern game. Instead of letting their imaginations go wild when building the maps they are going to be bound by historic landmarks and making it as authentic as possible. So am I looking forward to it…YES!! all the cod’s have been great so far. Do I think this is a step in the right direction….NO!! I think it was a step to the left rather than a step forward. Good thing is Infinityward will have a go at the next installment (if there is one).

I’m guessing it takes place in ewagima (or how ever u spell it) that was a brutal fight , that’s the one with the 5 or 6 guy’s setting the flag . War is war , u want stealth use a knife . u want future pretend your a cowboy . who needs a 100 round clip if you got game .

Man, this game is the same as CoD 4 in many ways, the same as CoD 2 and 3 in many ways and different then all the other ones in many ways. As you should probibly know by now, the Beta is out. Only 3 maps, up to level elevin in ranking and its still great. Sure the gun are crappier, but you dont notice because the enimies are using the same crappier guns. If your not going to buy it just because you think it’s going to be the same as all the other WWII games, then dont, but please don’t say you aren’t goin to buy it because it’s not based around the time ara you would have liked it to be based around.

I used to LOVE COD but my experience over the last year has not been so good.
The game (like all others) is full of hackers and cheaters and at every turn, the playing field is NEVER (let me repeat that) NEVER Fair.

To make matters worse, you can be totally banned from using your discs that you legitimately paid for and never once hacked, cheated or even attempted to cheat as happened to me on a server called DOORMAN is GOD, which is a non PB server that is full of cheaters. Apparent my GUID was hijacked there one day by a VERY slick hacker and since then I have been getting banned at various servers…..so …just keep in mind that even if you NEVER EVER cheat at all, you can still fall victim and your money is wasted.

Beware of going to non-Punkbuster servers, such as Doorman because you CAN get your GUID stolen and you will be banned because from PB servers even though you are TOTALLY innocent. I kid you not.

Of course, Doorman Is God is a very pathetic server, hackers galore, (but it had a low ping for me at the time) and the admins are extremely rude, obviously on a power trip and resort to foul language at the drop of a pin so these types of servers have ended my love of the game so I wont be buying it.

If you buy it, I would stay away from non PB servers if I were you.

DUUUUUUde just check out the trailer, I am positive that using a flame thrower to toast somebody is going to be just as exciting as letting the cpu kill people cause ya got a seven kill streak. They know what they are doing and im sure the guns will be more powerful, funner to use, and just if not a little less acurate but that adds a little more skill for the user! Two thumbs up, I cant wait for my copy!

I’ve only played COD4 and it had me hooked from day one. Hell, my wife played it for the first time the other day and now she hooked! I’m really looking forward to the challenge of COD5. The graphics look amazing and I’m sure the game-play will be just as good as the previous if not better. I understand that people might be annoyed at the fact the weapons are going to be old school and harder to use. But hey isn’t that part of the fun, learning new techniques and tactics to defeat your enemy. Lastly, the new addition of co-op sounds perfect now the prospect of having to share my COD time with my wife looks increasingly more likely

Got to say this, having played the COD5, I think COD4 is better (at least online).

You can’t hear anybody’s movement in it (I do just as well with the speakers turned off!).
The guns are boring.
Lag is rediculous.
Too many camping spots on the 3 beta levels.
The tanks are a waste of time.
People are so damn hard to spot (you’ll walk straight past them without realising)
Spawn points are poor.
Dogs are a nightmare (ie killed 3 times in a row by the same pack (due to above)).
Artillery strikes go on for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages.

Going back to Cod4 feels like a newer (and less frustrating) game.

my brother go his hands on a copy of the beta levels, he says pretty much the same as the above comment, i think ill be renting the game to see if ill buy it. i think cod4 was a break through in the boring mundane world of ww2, personaly i would have liked to have seen another modern warfare, with different weapons and maybe some vehicle missions, and a better sniper mission. who cares if it isnt based on a real war just make one up, (americans are good at that).after playing cod4 all the other war games just dont live up to the game play, graphics and cool sounds, bad company wasnt bad though, but it had a **** online experience.

Desert Storm
Iraq
Afghanistan

When will they learn? Many people (including myself) are tired of WW2 games and don’t want a history lesson every time we sit down to play a game.

I forgot to add, that on 2 of the 3 beta levels some people have actually found a way of getting under the map, which makes them impossible to kill, while they are free to shoot up at you.

Why did Treyarch not find this during Alpha testing?

I can’t imagine there’s any way of these faults being rectified, as the game is released early in November and the game is probably already being shipped.

Makes the whole Beta thing look more and more like a publicity stunt.

im very glad that activision is going back to WW2 because the gameplay is just amazing. I love COD4 a lot, but the constant machine guns takes the fun out of the game. In my opinion, I would rather use a bolt-action rifle than a m16. lol. Also, I currently play cod2 more than i play cod4 because of the glitches in cod4. they went through like 7 patches in 6 months of the game being sold!! Thats alot of bugs if you ask me. And the fact that WWII actually happened. That is what makes this game such an exciting rush to buy!!! I cant wait till it comes out!!!!

Having played the beta on a 360 i can honestly say i dont like it. I loved cod 3 and 4 but 5 seems alot like MOH pacific, you cant see enemies because there is just too much cover in bushes, you cant see people in windows, grenades are weak to say the least and for those who didnt like helis you now have a shed load of dogs that are near impossible to shoot, artillery fire that seem to last forever, grenades get stuck on the leaves of trees, the last stand is pathetic and you can stay alive for a minuite or more so you dont actually get the kill for ages, there are already some glitches that everyone seems to know that i hope will be fixed and the guns are just weak. Bring on another decent war so we can all move on and get some decent war games that dont involve wwii

oh and the tanks take a good 4 or 5 rockets to blow up…. lame

Im also tempted with Quantum of Solace, as many say its COD4.5 with a bond theme and ace online. Heck I may get both for refreshment.

It’s not better than COD4 in my opinion though, the graphics aren’t great (solid but a bit coin-op arcade-y – water is rubbish!) but the guns are fun close range. Long range its a chore.

Servers were getting hammered aswell, major lag, hopefully not long term.

I just wish they had gone forward with modern weapons that were ace in cod4, roll on COD6? The next one has to be World War 3 surely… Russia provoked by USA with a hint of Japanese backup!

I am a big Cod fan but i have to say im very dissapointed with cod 5, like most other people enough is enough on ww2. Cod 4 was game of the year for one good reason a new modern up to date warfare game, Fantastic guns, grenades,c4,red dot, silencers the list goes on why go back no sense at all. I do believe cod 3 and 5 are made by tryarch and 4 was done by infinity award and it looks like infinty award got it bang on loads of awards including game of the year.

i played about 2 rounds in the cod5 beta, and im VERY disappointed.
FFA’s are to ridiculous, you get spawn killed to much (to many people in FFA’s now). Maps are terrible. The graphics are worse, for example, I threw a grenade and it bounced off a leaf and hit me… The guys run like they have brooms stuck up there a#@.

Im saying this as a pro gamer. Im sticking with CoD4, and Gears of war 2. Add me if interested in 1v1 in CoD4.

I think COD4 was very revolutionary for the COD series. It took the COD’s out of WWII mode and gave it a well deserved facelift. I bought WatW bc im a old school COD fan, but i have a feeling that Resistance 2 will find more time in my PS3 than this version of COD.

I put my deposit down before i found out infinity ward was NOT making WatW. However, COD5 (projected release is spring/summer 2009) will be Infinity Ward, so i look forward to that one more so than WatW.

Ok, World War 2 is sick! Ive played this game and its awesome. Yes, modern warfare was cool, but old world wars is what got this entire series started. So shut up, playing the good game, and if u want modern weapons just go play cod 4 again. Btw, heard rumors that cod 6 is going to be either vietnam or modern but taking place in afganastan instead of iraq.

I love this one – got it yesterday and could not put it down. The funny thing is I was so used to COD4 that when it was dark I tried to put on my night vision gogles and there were none. i then realized tha tthese were not invented yet.

I hope they go back to old wars like the Cival War or something like that. i think that would be cool. Not many weapons to choose from the the tactics would be more important then the weapons.

the online play sucks, if you can even get into agame, you spawn next to enemy players, inside walls and even outside the map. enemys are hard to see. the maps are just too big, you can see they have put alot of hours into the backgrounds, but the people look like they are from cod1, i wish i had rented it before i bought it, it truly does suck hard nuts, i hope infinity ward does the next one if there is one, because i think waw has just wrecked it for me.

Well, having bought the game at midnight on release day, my opinion is that it isn’t as good as COD4. Anyone who states to the contrary is not thinking clearly.

The lag online is rediculous, with hit detection all over the shop. At least with COD4 the speed of the auto weapons would counteract this.

Random glitches. On Makin there’s a weird bit that stops you moving (where the platform begins).

Campers are worse than COD4 (admittedly not a game fault per-se) on levels such as Dome.

Grenades are less than useless (akin to a water bomb in terms of blast radius).

Spawn points are quite possibly the worst i’ve seen. I’ve spawned so many times next to where I was just killed (to be either shot or dogged again).

Plus, the whole LOCAL/LOCALE match selection is poor. I’ve still ended up playing yanks with stupidy good connections, even though I live in Wales (P.S: I do chag sheep, before you ask).

In conclusion I think Treyarch should have just been comissioned to produce a big map pack (10 ish) for COD4.

Call of Duty World at War is not Call of Duty 5. If this was the case World at War would be Call of Duty 9. Call of Duty 5 will succeed Modern Warfare. Dumb Fuqz!

I doubt they will bring in customizeable weapons in this one, with exception of a silencer and maybe rifle mounted grenade? Allthough i am dissapointed its based on a WW again (and was hoping for a made up but completely plausable storyline) i beleive the game play, gfx and multiplayer will far surpass this small flaw. Also, even though it is based on ww2 this could come as a shock and be a fantastic game (like medal of honour:allied assault) and beleive people should make their minds up with the demo and the game itself.

After playing it some more – it does not compare to COD4. The online play is crazy. Hitting people at point blank range in the head or chest with 4,5 or 6 shots would kill them and all they get is slightly injured – BS. It’s OK but nowhere near COD4.
