PS3 dominating hardware sales in Japan

This past week, Sony’s Playstation 3 has dominated hardware sales in Japan in the past week, mainly down to the huge release of MGS4: Guns of the Patriots. According to the latest figures from Media Create, the PS3 sold 75,311 units in the week of June 15, with the Xbox 360 only managing 2163 units sold. The Playstation 3 has a huge following in Japan, but those figures above are surely not going to impress Microsoft, as the PS3’s 75,311 units compared to the 2163 units of the Xbox 360 is a huge difference. I wonder how Microsoft will react to these latest figures.
Meanwhile, the Playstation Portable comes in at 2nd place in the charts with 64,675 units sold, compared to 39,201 units for the Nintendo DS. It appears Sony are cementing their place in Japan as they look to have got the balance just right in terms of preparing their strategy as even the aging Playstation 2 has managed to get into the charts. It looks like Microsoft and Nintendo will need to take note of the latest figures and assess what is going wrong in the Japanese Market.
The full chart listings are as follows:
* 1. PlayStation 3: 75,311
* 2. PlayStation Portable: 64,675
* 3. Nintendo Wii: 64,675
* 4. Nintendo DS: 39,201
* 5. PlayStation 2: 7297
* 6. Xbox 360: 2163
