Apple’s iPhone 3G has radically altered the landscape of the mobile marketplace

The launch day for Apple’s iPhone 3G was a busy one for Product Reviews, we had a lot of information to report and that day has changed the mobile marketplace forever. When Apple announced they were including GPS, 3G technology and a 50% price cut with the second-generation iPhone, that step radically altered the landscape of the mobile marketplace.
Apple could not of timed the launch of the iPhone 3G any better, with the coming battle between LTE and WiMax, and MMA’s Q2 white papers from a few research firms. This information and the fact that brands are starting to experiment on mobile devices will show 2008/2009 as the year where we find out how good the mobile market place will become and if it can be the true Third Screen.
The Apple Worldwide Developer Conference was just at the right place, at the right time. The mobile industry is moving and results will start to show towards the end of this year, whatever they will be. AT&T and Verizon were winners in the FCC’s 700 MHz wireless auction, with both brands gaining blocs of wireless spectrum.
Will WiMax vs LTE be a replay of HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray?
We have seen Nortel pursue the 4G-network solution of LTE, but with massive names like Comcast, Sprint, Intel and Google back Clearwire’s WiMax initiative with an investment of $3.2 billion. Then we must not forget Verizon’s recent $28 billion acquisition of Alltel, and both of these brands back LTE. This will be another war of formats, but how long before it’s decided?
The iPhone 3G makes it possible to get the technology in more countries than ever and also at a price that’s cheaper than ever for GPS, 3G, full web browsing on the move, third party application potential like we have never seen before and a lot more features. We are hearing that the worldwide mobile advertising marketplace is moving up year on year, this year is up to $2.7 billion compared to last years 1.7 billion.
Growth will continue and the biggest factors in this growth are usability and relevance, advertising by Google and other brands know this well. From Steve Jobs keynote you may of missed some major facts and they included 94% of iPhone owners using email and 98% using the mobile Web. Now with the 3G iPhone this will grow massively and bring both more people to the mobile web and a lot more income for brands advertising on the mobile platform.
While most websites look good on an Apple iPhone, I now believe we still need to target each phone with a much better view for that cell phone and not really tiny links as you would see on most sites from an iPhone. Meaning you have to zoom in and scroll left and right, the sites should have a made for small screen option.
