Will Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) make you buy a Sony PS3?

By: Daniel Chubb | June 16, 2008 | 43 Comments

PS3 Daily said the other day that Metal Gear Solid 4 was Sony’s answer to Halo 3 and also showed us some new MGS4 gameplay videos, today we ask if Metal Gear Solid 4 will make you buy a Sony Playstation 3?

Having owned a PS3 for some time, I do not need to buy one but when the PS3 gets exclusive games and ones that are as big MGS then you got to think that this will increase sales. The amount of PS3’s sold for gamers getting MGS4 is the real question. This could be a massive increase or just minor.

If you do not own a PS3, will you buy one for MGS4?

As the game has now been released worldwide we will see the results of this new release within the next month or two. MGS4 does look pretty cool and some of the games features do look fun, these include being able to distract enemy soldiers by planting playboy magazines and the different ways Snake can use camouflage. The game is said to have a massive single player game, but with any game these days, it’s the online gameplay that is key to long-term success.

Let us know your thoughts of MGS4 and also check out some gameplay videos on PS3 Daily.

Hmm… MGS4, although it has a FPS mode is NOT an FPS game. It’s a third person stealth game.

  • Slippy Sloppy

Personally no as (apart from MSG1 on the PS1) I’ve found the games a little boring due excessive cutscenes and the camera angles have always frustrated me. Having said that if I was to get a PS3 within the next month I would probably purchase the game. I know that might not make sense but my point is, if I had a PS3 spending £40 on the game of the moment isn’t a huge cost but spending £340 just to play it is.

  • ps3

I got mgs4 when it came out and to tell you the truth I never played any of the other mgs games. A person who has never played the game can still understand the story. This game is a must buy for people who own a ps3 or are getting one. This is the first game I have played where the hair is more alive. ign gave it a 10/10 and I give it the same. alot of cut scenes but are really amazing to watch.

  • ZeroYel

this is a perfect ending to snake the story was was great and ofcourse this one would have more talking and cut scenes then the other it is the final chapter of a great hero unlike Halo3(it was short).
This was a story for the MGS series fans.If it was a book you would have read it if was a movie you would have watched it. The acton was intense and the story of an aging snake on his last mission was perfect this game completed the series like none other and that is why critics and people enjoy it so much it officially puts a hero to rest.

  • SPM

My buddy bought the 80GB bundle over the weekend so there are people out there who will be convinced to buy a ps3 b/c of this game.

I already have a ps3 but strangley enough I bought mine because of gran turismo which isnt even out yet.

    BTW MGS4 is awesome

  • RJ

I bought the PS3 JUST FOR MGS4… best $500 ever spent.

  • OMEN

    Slippy Sloppy

all u just said is BS.

  • OMEN

so go ahead and play your gaylo wich is 3 hrs long of game play,mgs4 is 30 hrs long of game play.
cutsences are not part of the 30 or 40 hr game play,so shut your whining.

  • ollie

Yeah, I waited for the bundle and picked one up the first day it was on sale. There was a short line at the Best Buy outside waiting for them to open. I would say I saw half a dozen mgs and 80gb bundles sold in the few minutes I was in the store. When Blu-Ray won the HD DVD war (and I have the Toshiba…) I knew I would have to make the Blu-Ray switch soon than I had planned. Looking around the PS3 is the way to go for Blu-Ray. I had to ‘wait’ for bundle, it just made sense to spend $100 more and get the game, the better controller and the ‘better’ console. (more space, some PS2 compatibility, memory stick support).

I am not a gamer. Haven’t owned a ‘console’ since the Atari days. I am having fun with MGS. I do find the third person perspective to be confusing and my ability to perform in a gun fight is pretty lame but I will get better with some practice.

I expect Sony to see a pop in sales from the MGS bundle from what I say at Best Buy and I imagine there were others like me that ‘put off’ buying one until this bundle came out.

  • craig

I played through the first time in 20 hours…. so i dunno where you got 30 or 40 from; also the cutscenes are included in the total hours played. The best part isnt the length its the replayability theres so much to unlock! Altair suit is great : Easily my favourite game ever
p.s why bring up halo 3 its a mgs4 thread.

  • MilkManPictures

I spent $500 for MGS4… Totally Worth it! Best Game/Series ever!

  • Slippy Sloppy

OMEN, what’s up? Did Mommy not love you enough?

  • IHateYouAll

MGS4 was beyond my expectations. I thought it would be good, but that was an understatement. I’m not a fan of cinematic cut-scenes, not that I don’t like them or anything, just that I don’ judge a game by the cut scenes. The camo-gear is crazy fun, makes sneaking around a blast. The dart gun has always been a personal fav of mine, and having Drebin in the game makes life so much easier when you decide to go ape-$h*t with a 200 round machine gun (i.e. Vamp).

The game on Naked Snake difficulty (medium) took around 20-25 hrs; you can literally walk through guns blazing on that difficulty and never have to sneak around. Playing it through again the the difficulty level above Naked Snake, and if you try guns blazing you’ll just die. MGS4 should really be played above the Naked Snake level so you truely utilize the whole ‘Sneak’ aspect of the game, otherwise it’s just a walk in the park.

All and all, the story was a beauty and truely did tie up almost all loose ends, the in-game graphics are great, weapon variety was much better than I expected, and camera angles have really cleaned up since the last MGS (no more 45 degree angel above/behind). The one level when Snake’s dreaming in the helicopter and you play a level from the original MSG was perfectly placed; it helps show how far the series has come.

I would recommend Metal Gear Solid for PS3 owner. I’ve owned all my systems since the day they came out, so I didn’t go buy one just for this game. I don’t know why people keep comparing or equating Halo 3 and MGS4, they are such different games and their not even in the same genre of games (STOP ACTING LIKE F***IN MS AND SONY FANBOYS)

    **Stop fanboyism; hang yourself**

  • spiterod

I’m sure some will. Not me. Hate the series.

  • http://www.scea.com Ivan_PSP

I already own a 60GB PLAYSTATION 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This game is perfect a must have it already helped Sony sell out the new MGS4 Bundle pack. If you don’t own a PS3 you shouldn’t consider yourself a gamer just a wannabe.

  • Dizzle

    Praneeth,
Even though all the previous MG games are stealth only games.. If you actually played MGS4, you would realize this version can be play however you like. They changed it up for this final game in the series. If you find stealth to be to difficult, you can actually run in a gun everyone down to the last man. I think they aimed this game at pretty much everyone.

  • yzzlthtz

This is one of the best games ever made for a console period. If you have the money, buy a ps3 and mgs4. If you have a ps3, buy mgs4.

  • Sev

£340 is a lot to pay considering its the only one worth playing on ps3.

  • Jamie

    Sev

thats not true, your not buying a gaming console your buying an entertainment system. dvds, music, blu ray, photo’s, Digital tv (soon). all these things you can do on the ps3, and about the games, there are quite a few games out worth buying, and the games coming in the next few months (amazing)
£340 to me for all that your getting with the system is a pretty damn good deal i think.

  • Slippy Sloppy

I think the price is still too high if you only want to play games and don’t want a Blu-Ray player. If you then do it’s pretty good price compared to buying a stand alone player.

MGS4 sounds like it’s sorted it’s camera limitations out and if I had a PS3 I’d def get it but it’s still not enough to make me buy a PS3.

  • alex

ya i got mtgs4 and it is a great game 10/10 but i want to get an x box still not to play games but to screw it up, ill gust buy gears of war for pc and halo sucked

  • http://www.scea.com Ivan_PSP

  • alex

i just thought of something xbox dosent have enygood games and there arnt eny coming out. but mgs4 is just the begining of a long list of exclusiv games coming out for ps3

  • alex

if you have an 360 dont hold your breath for mgs4 to come out on it it would have to be a 6 disc set but blu rays got the ps3 covered

  • Shatterday

It did make me buy a PS3, and it is amazing.
Quit crying and go pick up this game, you won’t regret it!

  • jbreezy

I bought an 80GB bundle for this game. I was specifically waiting on MGS to buy one.

Multiplayer games will still go to my 360 though, I only plan on using the PS3 for exclusives and Blu-Ray movies.

  • Face

DO NOT compare this to Halo 1, 2, or 3. Not even in the same vicinity as Halo. Killzone has the potential to be, but lets be real. MGS is kick ass game, little too reliant “Boss” battles and cut scenes, but very damn good. It’s more of a Splinter Cell game, not a FPS and doesnt try to be. Graphics are crazy good as they should be. Still only bought a PS3 for the BR player. True value of a game lies within the multiplayer experience anyways. You get a game with both, you have a winner.

  • OMEN

    craig
is 30 hours long with out the cut sences, your not the developer so stfu.

  • IHateYouAll

    @ JBreezy

Hey JBristle, nice to see that you’re not a fanboy like you stated in response to the other thread we were chatting on. Thought I catch you up a little since you’re obviously unaware of what you truely are. You said..

“the definition of a fanboy is someone who can’t afford both consoles”

Well I knew that you were wrong, but rather than just tell you that you were completely wrong I thought it would be appropriate to post the definition which can be read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanboy or as stated below.

“Fanboy (sometimes spelled fanboi) is a term used to describe an individual who is devoted to a single subject in a fanatical manner, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession.”

In your case, JBristle, your obsession is your 360. You stated your “Multiplayer games will still go to my 360 though, I only plan on using the PS3 for exclusives and Blu-Ray movies”. For gaming, your 360 is your console of choice which is fine…or at least it would be if you didn’t spit fanboyism on every thread you post on. Some how you always feel the need to post something about your 360, regardless if the thread isn’t discussing the 360. You may not be fanatical about the 360, but you’re subtle Fanboyism is still just that: Fanboyism. What does that make you? That’s right, JBristle, you’re a fanboy. You already know my tag line (not a quote, JBristle), so maybe you should heed my advise (that goes to everybody else posting FANBOYISM on this thread too).

    **Stop fanboyism; h@ng yourself**

  • jbreezy

    @IHateYouAll

The funniest thing is, I like the PS3 you douche! ROFL… loser.

  • Face

Someone def needs to hang themselves, that or find a job that requires you to work more and stay off a site such as this. Jbreezy isnt one of them…Others have waaaaaaaaay too much time on there hands.. or hand.

  • IHateYouAll

    @ JBristle

Thought you only use your PS3 for exclusives and Blu-ray movies, all multiplatform games you’ll buy for you 360?! You’re words from another thread. Quit claiming to be a PS3 fan when the only games you’ve played are exclusives for it and refuse to buy/play any other games for it. That sounds like a fanboy to me.

    @ Face

Hey Fleas, seems that you have just a much time as I do. Maybe you should lead by example and never make another post. :D

  • Face

    @Ihatemydaddy and/or mommy

Actually I don’t have the time, but to check and see what line by line moronic diatribes you spew on everyone else’s proposed fanboyism is well worth the 2 minutes. For our own sake, drop your dick, drop on one of the 3 controllers you have, button your 7-11 khakis back up and flip them big bites. The world needs you.

  • IHateYouAll

    @ Flea

Are the fleas making you angry, Fleas? You’ve proven again that you too have “too much time on [your] hands”. Just by making another post and starting it out by stating “Actually I don’t have the time…” contradicts the post in and of its self. So how can anybody take anything you say seriously when you’ve just proven that you’re a liar, a hypocrite, and have such obvious anger management issues (there goes that vein in your forehead again LOL…the one on your FACE)?

    Good chatting with ya, Fleas

    **Stop fanboyism; hang yourself**

  • Face

    @ I hatemydaddy
Wow. You really do have Daddy issues IHATEMYDAD. Only a neglected, anger ridden, lack or life knucklehead that attacks everyone (yes I am now, due to your ignorance)on a message board about video games can contiue to use such to wear your poor, pathetic life on his sleeve. Everytime you post, you point out in clear detail that you have obvious issues that need poinant, detailed help. THAT is why nobody likes you in here and clearly all facets of your life, everyone would like you to just… fade away.

Back to business as usual gentlemen, IHATEMYDADDY is now in his place. Time to write post: 1 minute,8 seconds. Getting rid of knucklehead poster? Priceless!

  • IHateYouAll

    @ Fleas

LOL Fleas, do you think before, or even while, your type these responses? Lol Seems to be incoherant ramblings about your own repressed memories. Good for you for projecting your traumatic life exeriences on to me, but you know you’ll have to come to terms with you home life and sexuality sooner or later :D That took courage Fleas…the next step is acceptance, but please seek professional help as these threads will not offer you the help you truely need.

Time to write this post: 8 day, 23 hours, 1 second. Helping my friend Fleas realize he’s projecting his own childhood, priceless.

P.S. It wasn’t your fault Fleas

  • ollie

okay, after 2 weeks I finally got through act 1 on the normal setting. All I can say is I am having a blast with this game. I like the sneaking around, watching for patterns in the PMC. I used the .22 a lot in the last sequence before the end of Act 1. It’s more exciting to take someone out quiet than just jumping in an shooting everyone. I got the scope for the M44 and did some sniper shots too. There were a couple of times it was a blood fest but even then, once you have taken out the enemy, you better run before more show up.

I don’t mind the short story breaks. And you can bypass them after the first time.

  • ollie

So the the original question… I found this and it seem they ran out of the MSG4 limited edition:

  • Scarvalho

I already owned the ps3 since the first launch week. I paid $600 for my 60GB and it was well worth it. The PS3 is the best system ever, and it by far much better than the Xbox. The Wii is such not even worth speaking about.
If you don’t currently own a ps3, then thats too bad. It has more features than you can imagine that are currently being developed and will be a further add-on to an already extensive and feature packed console/media center.

  • Scarvalho

BTW, forgot to mention; MSG4 is an amazing game and definitly worth buying a ps3 for.

  • ehutch

anyone who wants to stick with the “no good games” line or put down mgs4 is MISSING OUT, plain and simple. stay away if that floats your boat. ive been having a blast with the ps3 and there’s a long list of killer release dates on the horizon.

  • LittleBIGman08

Well i have just received my ps3 FREE with my new phone (Samsung Tocco), I currently own a 360 elite with cod4 and pretty much everything else.

The X-box 360 is a fantastic console with a much better online service and community than the ps3 network and at the moment there are by far more and better quality games, however I am very impressed with the ps3 and wish i had bought one sooner to be honest.

I’ve just put a 320gb Hard-drive into my ps3 and got rid of the 40gig and i plan on purchasing play TV later in the year, I bought mgs4 and Gran Turismo prologue today and i am gob-smacked.

I’m no fan boy or anything of the sort i now have the best of both worlds and ill buy all the ps3 exclusives as they come out and the same for the X-box 360, why settle for one console when you can have both?

GT5 while quite a small game is simply stunning to look at, the graphics are superb and they have really done a good job of the sound and on my 52″ Samsung LCD and full 5.1 Sony surround sound its a bloody treat.

Cannot wait for the full game to arrive. I still have not yet played MGS4 but i plan on opening it today and i cant wait, I’m a massive fan of previous MGS games as their is just something so special about them.

I’ve seen all the trailers, read all the reviews and watched the game-play demos and footage and it looks amazing, cant wait for tonight to have a long session on it.

Overall i am very impressed with the ps3 its a fantastic and very high quality piece of kit and some of the games really are brilliant, cannot wait for little big planet to come out.
