Microsoft will launch Xbox 720 before Sony PlayStation 4: is it a mistake?

It is no secret that Microsoft wants to be the first to bring out the newest in the next-generation games console. They were the first with the first of the next-gen consoles, the Xbox 360 and they now wish to do this again with the Xbox 720. Many believe that Microsoft made a huge mistake rushing the production of the Xbox 360, the company has had a string of troubles with the console, but it now seems as if they are finally on top of these problems.

Xbox 360 boss Robbie Bach, has been speaking in an interview with Venture Beat, he said that if you asked him whether being first to the market with Xbox 360 was the right decision, he’d say “definitely yes,” and the platform holder has a desire to do it again with the next console. He also added “The last cycle for the original Xbox was a little shorter than typical (at four years). We started way late.” He then went on to say “If you take the question of whether it was the right thing to try to be first with Xbox 360, the answer to that is definitely yes. It has given us a leg up in a number of places that are super important.”

When asked on his expectation for the next console’s release plans, he said it was “too early to tell.” Many people will be thinking that Microsoft is involved in a race against Sony so that they can launch the Xbox 720 before the PS4, but Sony have stated recently that they are in no rush to launch the PS4, so Xbox might just have the Xbox 720 ready for us by 2011. But this might just play in to Sony’s hands once again.

The 720 will probably out before the PS4. But given how long the projected shelf life of the PS3 is, Sony probably has visions of the PS4 competing with the XBox1080.

The 360 is in year three of what will probably be a 5-7 year life cycle. The PS3 is in year 2 of what will probably be a ten year life cycle (though Sony could release the PS4 in year 8 or year 9 like they did with the PS3 and PS2.

The 360’s life cycle is much too short for my consumption pattern. I won’t buy a 720 having bought a PS3 just over 3-4 months ago.

Of course its a mistake.. why would you want to be on the market before your competitor and start taking market share away before they have a chance?

Arn’t companies suppose to be honorable like the old days of knighthood and announce to each other exactly when they launch a console so that they can all prepare and launch on the same day?

I don’t think there’s any point in releasing the next Xbox any time soon. There haven’t been any worthwhile developments in technology since the PS3 came out with the Cell and Blu-ray and Nintendo’s wiimote. At best, Microsoft will just make minor improvements on the processer, get motion controllers and get the rights to use blu-ray. Worst case senario, they make an xbox365 with nothing innovative or new about it.

There’s no such a thing as Xbox 720. We know PS4 because Sony just adds a number. And what makes you think Microsoft will survive for a third time?

I think it worked for M$. Aside from the RROD (which we’re all well aware of), they achieved an install base way above what they would have done had Sony not experienced manufacture problems. I assume they’re attempting to repeat this success with their next console but I feel the biggest mistake would be to release it within the next 2 years as people aren’t ready to buy yet another console, when the Wii, 360 and PS3 are doing just fine.

Product Reviews strikes again with another stunning insight into the next generation of consoles….

…sorry, let me try again… stating the painfully obvious and recylcing information that been out for ages is a waste of our time. Go back to playing games and don`t EVER put an article on the web again. Ever. You don`t even have delusions of grandure - you have delusions of adequacy. My cat could write a better article than this with one paw tied behind his back, out of his mind on catnip.

    Moron.

3rd huh?? To date Sony has sold a world record 120 million PS1’s (which was only recently retired), another 120 million PS2’s (which still sells millions) as well as 30 million PSP’s. No gaming company even comes close (61 million original NES’s sold). I hate when ignorant fan boys spew facts they read on a fanboy website without verifying said fact. Don’t you want to know the truth? Do you care that you are ignorant?

There’s a good chance that MS will probably get out of the gate first, but I’d guess that they’ll produce a problematic piece of hardware, but soak up the costs with live subscriptions/software. MS has always had a crappy release lineup. Be it hardware or software. Just look at Vista.

Huh…what? How did this play into Sony’s hands? Last time I checked, Sony was in 3rd place in the current generation console race in terms of market share. The Xbox 360 would have struggled big time if they had not released first. Especially considering that their “killer ap” in Halo 3 didn’t come out until just last year.

If Microsoft releases first again in the upcoming generation, that is going to spell big problems for Sony. Microsoft survived the last generation because they had a machine that was measureably more capable for games and online play despite being late. This generation, the differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of performance are very subtle with neither system demonstrating superiourity let alone true universal 1080p support.

I hope they give us more time, we just bought this console and the Wii last year, and we don’t even have the ps3 yet! I think the game consoles should be every 7 years instead of every 5 years.
