Linux preferred over Microsoft Windows by Acer

We reported yesterday how open source is becoming more of a favorite by the end user and as money and budgets get tighter for the public this will only increase. Linux has been said to be preferred over Microsoft Windows by Acer, this will include the fact that a Linux laptop can be sold for less.
Cheap Laptops reported “Gianpiero Morbello, Vice President of Marketing for Acer has said that his Taiwanese PC maker is to develop the market for Linux, not just for its low cost ultra-portable but for the companies’ laptops as well; the reason given is due to the cost and operation of the Microsoft OS over open-source Linux”.
With this in mind, are you happy to buy a Linux laptop instead of a Windows machine?
We also heard that On Tuesday, Acer officially unveiled their entry into the low cost mini-laptop market by launching their Aspire One, which will come with both Windows XP and Linux. The Acer Aspire One price begins at $379 so it makes sense to cut costs as much as possible. The attraction for this is not only the cost but also the expectancy of a full-featured mini-laptop.
Some users also find Linux a faster software platform to boot up; the problem comes with people getting use to Linux rather than Windows.

Lets hope that the Acer one which at the moment seems to offer XP with 1Gb and GNU/Linux with 512Mb RAM will allow users to select the 1Gb model pre loaded with GNU/Linux! Otherwise I think we will see a fair number of people going for the XP version and sticking ubuntu on it.
Hell, it’s about time.
You can do it OEMs, go to revolution.
Made microsoft your slave, you dont need microsoft, microsoft need you.
Unit and pay a real price for windows to microsoft, like $5 (and i still think that is overpriced), if microsoft think windows worth more, let microsoft sell it as high as they want by their own, and let see who buy it.
If just Acer, HP , Lenovo and Dell stop buying/selling windows today, microsoft will be bankruptcy tomorrow, and i mean literally.
UNIT OEMs, GO TO REVOLUTION, ITS ABOUT TIME.
I hope the applications follow the trend and begin to be ported to Linux. I use a lot of software for telescope control, astronomical imaging, and stacking for my hobby. Linux has alternatives that are not currently as good as their Windows counterparts. When Linux catches up in apps in every niche field, then that will be the day I am looking forward to. I pray that it comes soon.
I certainly prefer Linux on these small devices. They’re not gaming machines, but word processing, Web surfing and emailing machines. OpenOffice, Firefox and other standards do that just as well on Linux as on Windows, and they’re free.
Further, one escapes a lot of security trouble, doesn’t need an antivirus program to suck up CPU time & battery life, and is outside the range of any and all attacks directed against Windows.
For the advanced user, there’s even a lot of great Open Source apps that can be installed with only marginal effort.
